Played for first time since renovations (thankfully as someone's guest), the course has really not changed much to play, but I have a few complaints: 1) For over $200 you should not need to buy a yardage book! Where's the GPS in the cart? 2) The complimentary laser slows down play because you need to see the pin 3) Every fairway had grooves from recent work 4) The greens were crunchy and the ball wasn't rolling particularly well. If you care more about the golf than the view, go to Aviara or Torrey Pines.

The schmoozing starts before you even play. Bag guys, pro shop people, guy in the locker room fawn all over your every need or want. The only thing missing are the 2 slaves on either side of the pro shop counter manually fanning you with big, oversize palm leaves. I expected the palm leaves for $235/round. Course was in good to excellent shape. Tees, fairways, rough, bunkers and greens were all very true and very uniform. Course is basically the same as before but the turf is much better. Practice facility is pretty nice as well. Food was above average and overall, playing with a deep marine blue ocean as your backdrop speckled with snow white sailboats and watching pelicans fly by, well, it ain't your typical day at the muni. I enjoyed the day immensely. Will play the other side to see the "changes" there next week.

What a beautiful course and layout. Conditions are pristine and the views are amazing. Hard to keep focus on your game in such an amazing setting. The rough is really thick, keep the ball in the fairway if you want to shoot low. If you can afford to play any course just once this is it.

Played the North course on 4/20. Wonderful course in great shape. It is pricey, but if you are willing to spend $235 on a round of golf, then this is a good place to do it. Tom Fazio at his best, very fair course. Customer service and clubhouse facilities are top notch.

Played recently at Pelican Hill's North course. I can say from the time you pull up to the time you leave you are well cared for. Great clubhouse (watched the Masters there) and truly an very nice Golf Shop as well. Staff was top notch from bag drop to clubhouse. The driving range is a little weak with mats to hit off. I felt for the $, you should get to hit of grass. The course itself was great overall with the views, etc. I won't say it was the best conditioned course, but it was very good. Greens super fast, and difficult pin positions made it fun too. Overall, I like the course, staff and clubhouse better than TRUMP, but the condition of TRUMP was better.

Played on 12/27 with a 10:35 tee time. Cool and windy but a spectacular day for oceanside golf. I have always enjoyed this course but for $235 I'm looking for perfection. This is basically the same course as before the closure with some refinements. The course has been lengthened a little. Some bunkers moved around, new fairway turf and new turf grown longer in the rough areas. The greens have wider aprons and a new laserlink system has been installed. Each cart has a hand held laser gun that picks up a target imbedded in the flagstick for accurate distance readings to the hole. These worked well but I still prefer my range finder as I get distances to hazards, etc. Lot's of employees but customer service a little spotty as described below. Curbside drop off was top notch. They also place your bag on the driving range (balls are included in the $235) and offer you bottled water. Nice touch. Unfortunately you hit off of artificial turf. The putting green is adequate (barely) and there is no short game area for chipping, sand, etc. There appeared to be another area for lessons on the other side of the range - probably for lessons. I believe there may have been a short game area at that location. The pro shop was nicely appointed. Not as much service in the pro shop. It took too long to get someone's attention to check in. There is a bit of a drive to the first tee and the starter was knowledgeable but they do not track pin placements for you (due to the laserlink system?). Ocean views from nearly every hole make the $235 nearly worth spending on a clear day like ours. The ocean views were spectacular with visibility past Catalina out to San Clemente Island. $10 million+ homes added to the view. The wind made the course a bit more challenging. The course was well maintained. Marshals were not evident this day and we ended up waiting on nearly every hole. The standard at this course is apparently 5 hours and 15 minutes. We finished in 5 1/2 hours. The views kept us entertained but there was really no reason to tolerate slow play. Due to the ongoing construction and layout, there is no opportunity for a snack at the turn. You must rely on the beverage carts. We saw them about three times during the round. Warm towels at the end of the round were a nice touch. The men's locker room was goergus but seemed unattended. The 19th hole was very nice, albeit expensive. $12 + cocktails. The pizza was very good. Bottom line -- this is the essentially the same course at a much higher price. Twilight rates are $149 -- a $50 increase from the old prices. Although I enjoyed the day immensly, at $235 I doubt I will be back soon.

Pelican has the two best courses in Orange County. They are challenging, greens are fast and the whole experience is incredible. I would say these are a must play if you have not played them. You cannot go wrong with either course, but I perfer the south because it takes you closer to the ocean.

for some reason i felt closer to GOD out here. i had chance to play here on thanksgiving morning. incredible. i have dreams about being on a course like PELICAN. too bad they are shutting down until 2007 for the remodeling of the resort and spa (i think).
the course actually wasn't in better shape than a course like empire lakes, but that doesn't mean this course sucked. the course layout and design were perfect. the greens were excellent...and watch out because everything rolls towards the ocean.
TO THE GROUP BEHIND US ON THANKSGIVING MORNING: (if you do read this board):
thank you for showing much class out on a course that most people will never have a chance to play. you guys were the perfect example of why GOD should not let some reproduce. but it was very funny to me when we got to the club house and not ONE of you dared to look in my direction. what a bunch of wussies.

Beautiful course with great views is in great condition. Pricey, but playable at twilight during the week or with a player's club member.

A very enjoyable experience, but a pricey one. Got to play with someone who had a member's card, which brought the price down to $135. Hole #14 is the most scenic golf hole that I have had a chance to play. Nothing but hole and ocean views from tee to green. For the $$, I was expected the fairways to be more lush, but they are about the same as Lost Canyons and Robinson Ranch (which are both very good). Was just expecting the ocean side climate leading to pristine fairways. I found the greens very difficult to properly read. Would love to go back if I find a few extra $$ in some hidden location.
I understand that they are doing away with the practice facility. The cards for the 2005 players club state that the practice facility may be closed as early as June 2005. The practice facility was nice, but come-on.....$185 for a weekday round, but you have to pay for the range balls?????

played the north course on 9/22, a.m.- course was in terrific shape, one of the most beautiful courses I ever played. just about every hole had a ocean view. professional staff and kept speed of play where it should be,about 4-1/2 hrs. pricey, but if you have the opportunity to play--play it! only down side--practice area quite a distance from course--we were dropped off--they don't provide any transportation.

Great course. Nice staff. They even came around half way through round and cleaned our clubs and put more ice in our cooler. Okay, that's a little over the top, but hey, what the hell. Nice views. Lots of trouble if you don't stay in the middle. A fair test of golf. Way too expensive, but if you make a friend in their player's club, you can get some discounts. Treat yourself to it at least once.

A great course with wonderful views. A little slow with some golfers hitting into us. Had to call the marshalls. Greens fast and true. Expensive but well worth it as a treat.
Service by staff was second to none.

This is absolutely a beautiful, immaculate course with gorgeous views of the ocean and like velvet. It is a lot of $$$$$ but if you are going to spend that kind of money - this is the course to spend it on!

Played twilight a few weeks ago. Finished in 4 hours. It was great. The conditions were awesome. Not as many spectacular views as the South course but I think it is a tougher more challenging course. The greens were rolling sooth and medium fast with lots of undulations. Tough but fair course. A bit steep but is worth it for twilight. Don't know if full price is worth it?

Find a friend who is a member of their Player's Club so you can enjoy this slice of golf heaven for a "reduced" rate. Yes, it is way too expensive ($99 twilight), but it is a beautiful, fairly difficult course. Lots of variety in the layout. Great customer service from the valet to the marshalls. I'd highly recommend it, if you can afford it.

Play Pelican for the vistas, not the golf. Fun to look at all the multimillion dollar houses and the ocean views on nearly every hole, but the course layout is not as impressive as Talega or Black Gold. I realize the realestate here is high and the green fees correspond, but for the money, there are better pure golf experiences elsewhere.
But if you're looking to impress a client or visitor, the service here is impeccable and the views are the best. I played during the week of airation. Pro taking my reservation said it would be better than I expect. He was wrong. Eventhough we were only charged $99, putting was a joke. Nothing inside 6 ft rolled straight and the speed varied from green to green. Took us over 5 hours to finish our round even when the course was supposedly in subpar conditions and not as busy as it could be. I must say that the Marshall was very communicative and did try to hussle the slow groups ahead of us. Unfortunately, w/ the high fees that golfers pay here, they feel that they've paid for the right to savor every stroke.
So if you come here, expect a slow round, better than avg conditions, spectacular views, but avg golf.

VERY EXPENSIVE!! Only worth the fee when someone else is paying but it is a great golf experience. Without a doubt my favorite golf experience (condition, pace of play, service, course layout, views, etc) in OC. I have played almost all of OC courses and none compare - then again, none cost this much!!

One more note. The staff will not allow you to start prior to your tee time. They will not even allow you to pay until 15 minutes before your tee time (for super twilight anyway).

I played this course today (north). It is beautiful. I was in awe as I looked out onto the golf course from the restaurant (the grill) in the clubhouse. I was also impressed with the course conditions. However, I played at 2:30PM and paid the super twilight rate (60 dollars). No way would I ever pay 250 or the regular twilight rate. It's not worth it. Also, I was a bit disappointed that the holes were not on the coast. It's not as close to the ocean as Torrey Pines. I played speed golf today with my buddy and almost finished. Do the super twlight and hope you can finish. I definently recommend this course, it's beautiful, just not for that ridiculous price.

The Pelican Hill golf course are my favorite in OC. The green fee is steep…too steep...but the experience memorable. I played twilight today on the North although the twosome we joined played the South yesterday and said the South was in better shape. The North was in great shape though so I wasn’t disappointed. Greens were immaculate…Service was good…Layout was awesome…Good times.

this course is golf heaven. this is what golf was meant to be like, it is very prestine, never has a ball mark on a green or a divot in a fairway or tee box. immaculate.
