I have played here before and was looking forward to some great golf. The golf was pretty good but not great. The golf course was a little thin and the water that runs throughout the course was not fully running.Overall I enjoyed myself but I have seen the course in better conditions and they raised the greens fees.

Played 7/27. Must agree with other reviewers, while this is a quality track, I wouldn't play here for rack rate right now. Considerable amount of tees sanded, lots of thin areas in the fairway.
Greens pretty consistent. Play early to get favorable wind. Course much tougher than its rating with the wind up.

Unless you made a lot of dough at the tables, and you're playing with their money, I wouldn't drop $160 to play here.

Not worth the price. The greens were sanded on about 3/4 of the greens, and the rest were not which made for a tough time reading the speed, the traps were not finished they just drove thru and no edge raking. The charge was a premium but the maint. was slack.

Boy this is the worst i have seen this course. still had a great time but they need to either lower the green fee or make it worth what they charge. still say oak creek is the only course worth a 100.00. any way go tiger go.

Was able to walk on by myself and got off a little after 8 and was able to finish in under 3 1/2 hours. The course was in excellent shape, fairways were lush, greens were fast, traps had great sand quality (yes I found my fair share). I have always thought the staff here was top notch. Even for the price of $132 I still think this is a great deal and with the conditions and the service this is the reason I will keep coming back.

played this course for the first time yesterday...wow what a drive...it is no picnic getting out there from orange county

anyway, to the review....the course is in terrific conditions...the conditions of the fairways were just about the best of any course i had ever played...same goes for tee boxes and rough...sand traps were in great shape too...soft, fluffy sand...

some of the greens on the front nine had been recently sanded, it seems, but they were still fast and rolled true

the greens here are 1) very fast...definitely stay below the hole, or you are looking at an easy three putt...2) very firm...several times, i would hit decent irons into the greens, and they would run all the way back off the green, and finally 3) very tricky...it is hard to get a judge on the break on several of them...there is definitely some "mountain break" on holes near the hills, too...

the color of the greens are not super "green", but which greens are this time of year? at least they are fast and roll true, and you cant ask for much more than that

as for the play of the course, it is a difficult course...hit it straight, or you will find yourself looking for your ball all day in the native grasses...you have to hit it high to hold the greens, but you also have to hit it low because of the windy conditions...and if youre going to miss, make sure you miss to a safe spot, or you will put up some ugly numbers out here

Course was in outstanding shape. Rough has been cut down since nation wide tour stop. Played much more forgiving. Got done in under 4 hours during the week. Greens are still very fast. Make sure to leave yourself under the pins, downhill putts will not stop.

I got off on Friday 1/25 as a single and there was a couple of 4somes behind me and a couple of twosomes ahead of me. So I was able to just take my time and still finished in a little over 3 1/2 hrs. The greens were not as fast as they typically are but still had some very good speed to them. The fairways were great as were the bunkers which I unfortunately found a few times. The rough was not all that think so there wasn't a big penalty for missing the fairway or green. The was a sunny day but the wind started to pick up towards the end. I've always thought the service was great here and this coupled with a great golf course has kept me coming back. I paid $132 which includes a discount but I think this is worth it, although its not something I would do on a regular basis.

Played this course a few months ago and it was in good shape. Played 7/27 and I can't believe it's fallen off that quick. Fairways were brown and hard. Greens were hard and fast. Sign-up for the casino's players card to save 20% off green fees. Still, @ $120 a round it to much money for the shape it's in. It's a tough course only made tougher when the prevailing winds kick up @ around noon each day. Hope they can get it in to shape for the tournament.

I agree with 1PLUS1's comments about Barona. I played Sunday July 29 and the course conditions were unacceptable. With a $70 twilite rate and regular rates up to $150, it seems reasonable to expect at least some grass to be under your ball in the fairway. Unfortunately, the current fairway conditions are worse than what you would expect from an American Golf managed course. Barona is one of my favorite courses in the county and it is a shame to see these conditions. I played the course in late July last year and while the conditions are always firm at Barona in the summer there were no problems with the fairways last year. The firm fast greens and extensive bunkering at Barona require a high soft approach shot for many pin positions. A high soft short iron off hardpan is a tall order. Maybe if my index were plus 6 instead of 6, I would be comfortable with that shot. As it was, I found myself forced to play away from some pins because I felt a lower trajectory shot would be safer from the hardpan. I hate to say it, because I love the course, but I will not come back until they put some water on the fairways.

1PLUS1 - San Diego
Played Saturday, July 21, and couldn't have been more disappointed! Fairways are brown and dry and, in many cases, lacking any turf at all; some have been aerated. Plenty of roll on the tee shot if you hit a low hard one but very easy to run through the fairway on some holes.

Conversely, the greens were in good shape as they held well-struck shots yet putted quite fast and true. Still, many scars remain on the putting surfaces from old, unrepaired ball marks. Spent quite a bit of time repairing these marks in order to give myself a smooth path to the hole.

Teed off at 2:25pm and followed a local club group of traveling golfers (10 foursomes); putted out on #18 at 7:35pm! Front nine took 2 hours and 40 minutes to play with no marshall in sight...unacceptable.

Had heard the course is being prepped for the Nationwde Tour event scheduled for later this year but wasn't able to confirm if this is the reason for the poor playing conditions. Or could it be that the water situation is a contributing factor?

Thankfully I was able to play at a drastically reduced greens fee. My advice? Do yourself a favor...steer clear of Barona until they get the golf course in condition worthy of their already overpriced fees.

Course was is great shape. played the twilight at 2:30. The service was very good for the cost. I have played every course in San Diego, rank this one the second hardest behind Madres. the slope of 132 from the whites was tough. Even great drives would roll through the fairway and be lost. greens were hard and fast. You need to chip short, Cant attack these greens. If you have never played and want a challange, then it's a Must play!!

I played the late rate for $ 50 bucks, also you get 20 % off if you have a Barona players card (they will sign you up for one free). I also played from the gold tees (equivalent to blues tees). With my handicap I should of play from blue (white tees there). Course was in great shape considering they will be aerating next week. Very challenging course and also very scenic. Greens in top shape and fast. All the golf carts come equipped with ice coolers and 2 bottles of water. They only sell beer on the front 9 so stock up and place them in your ice cooler. I am definitely going to play this track again and the driving range is included with your fee.

Stop in the Casino and play a couple dollars with your Barona Club card and you will get free rooms and discounts on golf and merchandise.

Be warned it's a good piece of driving to the course but well worth the trip.

Tough !! this is a great track ! as stated by all before this is one super golf course. We were lucky, got off around 2 PM, no one around. The rough is up and thick, if ya miss the fairway its a goner,,but, they give you room, soooo, if ya miss its your fault. Nationwide Tour playing thier championship here in October. They will not find a cupcake here. Played the Gold tees which would be blue anywhere else, Had a great time. Wish it was easier to get to. Then again the greens might just make one a bit daffy if played too often. I rate the overall experience a 9+.

This is the course that you'll say " d%mn it's so hard, but it feels so good! phew~" after the round. The course design is challenging and the green is difficult to read and rolls really fast. You get to warm up with unlimited free range balls. If you want to play two good and inexpensive public courses in SD, first go to Torrey Pines, then head straight to Barona.

played 2/20 - 12 noon, $52 a very good deal,,, Havent been here in a few years, what a great track!. Conditions were very nice, staff is almost over the top trying to treat ya like a special customer. Greens are spotted with old ball marks, but,,, they have repaired and sprayed to make them go away faster,,they are smooth, they putt terrific and they are FAST. Fairways are great,, all in all a fun day.A little chore getting there, long drive for me. Think Cross Creek without all the funny stuff and you have Borona. A very fun destination.

Played on 12/26/06 at 12:20 - Twilight time. We (3-some) followed a 5-some (altho we noticed there were only 4 bags?!) so play was a bit slow (5 hrs and we couldn't finish). Played there several times before and service has been better. We wanted to ask a marshall about the speed of play, but NOBODY was around!!! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the course, and will definitely play again, but not sure how much a "good twilight rate" is worth . . .

Played Barona on July 9 at 2:00 - first twilight time. The rate is $70, but only $56 if you join Barona's casino player's club (membership is free and the pro shop can do it for you). Plus the starter got us out 30 minutes early. Course is in pretty good shape, except for some thin spots on the fairways. Considering how hot and dry and windy it is in Lakeside, that's to be expected. Great greens - firm and fast with lots of undulations, but they putt really true. The Nationwide Tour Championship is coming here in '07 and '10 - those boys should have fun on these greens. Note: If if matters to you, the beer cart only serves on the front 9 for liability reasons. Service is available on all 18, though, and the carts have a great GPS. Long drive to get to Barona, but the course is so worth it!

Played here on 3/11/06, course in great condition. But the greens are super fast, even for the public. They need to let the greens grow a little more so you can enjoy golf. Most of us are not professionals and MAKE THE GREENS MORE FORGIVING. As it stnads green fee is not worth it, alot more gofl course around SAn Diego or vicinity thats much better than BARONA.

Played here on Wednesday March 8 in the afternoon. Another amazing golf course that happens to be in the middle of fricking nowhere!

This course is in immaculate condition. I can't even think of anything bad to say. Greens were awesome--rolled about a 10, true, and they are huge...greens are so big and undulated that pin placement could totally change the way you would approach each hole. Fairways were near perfect. Slightly hard pan, but not too bad. I can't even remember seeing a bad patch anywhere. Same with the tee boxes--they were big and perfect, completely level and no bare spots anywhere. Furthermore, each hole has at least 4 different boxes to hit from...never saw two sets of tee markers jammed into the same tee box area. Course layout is neat also. Wide fairways with plenty of bunkers and semi natural waste areas. Easy to catch a good lie in the waste areas and play out of, good for the score.

Only heads up!!! If you are out here during the week this spring, make sure there is no high school golf match going on. We played the back first and then got stuck behind some high school match on the front nine, slower than sh$t . I think the last group of the match must have been whatever team is below frosh/soph if that even exists b/c they took roughly 1.5 hours to play three holes.

Staff here is awesome as well! Friendly, helpful, and polite. Can't wait till I finally get that helicopter I've always wanted so I can get back to Barona more often.

First off, the view of the area is great. You have to play the correct shot, remember not to always go for the pin. Greens are large, with lots of breaks. Good roll on the fairways. Sandtraps all over the places, so shot selection(just be smart)
Will play again when given the chance.

Course was in great shape. 5 sets of tees makes it a great challenge to any skill level. The greens are very fast and the pins are always placed in positions that make you concentrate on every putt. Reads are true but distances can be tricky. GPS computers on board take the guess work out of club selections. The rough is fair but the areas outside the cut of the course are extremely overgrown making it critical to stay on the course. Most holes have plenty of fairway with very tricky landing areas. This course was definitely worth the price of admission.

I recently had a bad experience with Barona's method of working singles into their schedule....I had called at 8:30 am to request availability at twilight (12pm), and was told to "come on out", that there would be no problem. Sooo, I drive the 45 minutes to be told at 11:15 by the shop clerk "oh, we'll get you out, but you'll have to wait until 1:30"

Grrr....these rocket scientists couldn't have looked at their tee sheet and told me they were booked until 1:30?

I left angrily after having a fruitless converstion with the "head pro". He offered nothing other than a lame apology, and responded" I don't think this has ever happened in the 5 years we've been open".

That's laughable....keep telling people to "come on out" without guaranteeing them a starting time, and you'll find yourself with only the hotel guests using your facility. Too bad, the course is very nice....at least until the summer months when it is oppressively hot!!

Fortunately, I was able to make it to Maderas in about 45 mins, and they bent over backwards to accomodate me on a superior course!! Kudos to the management at Maderas for making it a good day, after Barona completely dropped the ball.

The summer heat has not been kind to the grass at Barona. There is essentially no rough at this course--it's mostly just dirt. The fairways are thin and crusty--but the ball rolls FOREVER. One fairway in particular (No. 15, I believe), was like playing on compacted dirt. There wasn't a green piece of grass anywhere.

There is beautiful bunkering on this course and most of the sand traps were very good. Some of them, however, need some more sand--there is just a thin layer of nice-looking sand covering hard-packed sand.

Many of the greens have recently been punched, but they were still in very good shape. The layout of this course is terrific and the greens are still in excellent shape. The rest of the course, though, needs water and some TLC.

Great layout over gently rolling hills in a secluded valley 40 minutes from downtown San Diego. Definitely belongs in the top tier of SD courses. Overall the course is in good shape though several holes are still recovering from a recent punching and there is no rough whatsover--its seems to have been mowed down. Played as a single on a Monday afternoon (Aug 23) and flew around the course in 3 1/2 hours. Barona is running a special of only $50 after 11am thru end of summer, includes cart, range balls, and bottled water---plus it's next to a casino--a must play.

One of the best courses i have played. The greens were perfect the ball rolled so true, those putts going downhill were really fun. The fairways were punched but they were better than most courses that are not. The customer service was top notch from the starter down to the drink girl. No alcohol is served at the turn or on the back nine. Well worth the benny to play.

Always enjoy playing Barona Creek Golf Club. Always kept in fantastic shape, fun layout, and worth every penny. Our group played the Gold tees and the course was plenty long. My advice to those playing it for the first time is not to take the relatively wide open fairways for granted and play conservative. Bank on your short game and reading the tough greens correctly.

Course is in very nice shape and fun to play, get there early and enjoy a truly pro practice area, comparable to Primm, which I believe to be the best. Played afternoon 6/23 and early 6/24. both in the 4 1/2 hour range. Course is fun, tee off with driver, then you need a good iron to reach green. Sand was fluffy, but consistant,, great track, we will return. Hurry before it gets too hot.

Great course, well maintained! Definitely will play the course again! Greens were not rolling at 10+, but the putts roll true. Only issue, for an afternoon round, we played at a 6 hour pace because of an afternoon tourney.

What an absolutely beautiful facility! Fantastic practice facility, with putting and chipping greens, and bunker play. The course was in perfect condition. The tee boxes were immaculate, the fairways firm and fast, the greens were like a billiard table (10.5 stimp). The crew was friendly and helpful and the pros were great. The course plays long from the tips (7000+), and plays even longer when the wind whips through the valley. The course plays tough but is very forgiving. The fairways are wide and allow you to bang driver down the middle. The greens will kill you if you're not careful, very fast with big undulations. The drive can be tedious. It was 90 mi from me (5fwy-805-8-67), but it was worth every mile :) Barona has nice stay and play packages. If you want a weekend gambling-golf getaway but dont want to drive to Vegas, you have to try Barona.
