Played Carlton Oaks today 3/6/11. This is definately a hidden jewel in San Diego. I am fortunate enough to live close to the course. I read a review earlier that was favorable about the course but not very good about the driving range. That is spot on! The balls on the range are a disgrace to golfballs and the course should really do something about it! The course on the other hand is extremely good. The greens were fairly slow today but they were rolling true and slightly firm. The course is in good overall condition but it is a great test of golf. If you are a scratch or low handicap then the Black tees will surely test your skill. From the blacks, this is one of the toughest courses around. There are 4 sets of tees overall so anyone of any skill level can feel comfortable out here. I definately recommend playing this course plus they have a great remodeled bar for after your round!

I usually play the military course because they are in good shape and cheap but I decided to try out this course since it's close to where I live. Overall, the course is in OK shape and the round was fine, but the fees were way overpriced for what you get. They advertise a junior fee on their website (played w/ my 10 year old), but when we got there they said the junior fee is only in effect when their twilight fees were... what is that?
DO NOT USE THEIR DRIVING RANGE!!! The range balls are the worst I've ever seen anywhere. I didn't even finish the bucket because the balls were destroying the face of my clubs. The balls were dry-rotted and a lot of them were actually split. I didn't dare hit my $400 driver with those crappy balls! The hitting surface is light grass over a lot of sand and in dire need of some maintenance. $11 for 90 crappy balls... no thanks!
The course is fine, if a little overpriced, just practice somewhere else before you get there.

Always love the challenge here. Played Wed 11/3 and it was HOT! Greens were rough and ugly from aeration, but were rolled flat, so putts still ran fast and true. Still need to work on service -- Driving range again not open early enough to warm up (we play here at least 2x/month) and it was over 90 degrees, we started at 9, and NO water in the coolers already!

Played here on Wednesday 5/5/10. Weather was near perfect, warm with light breezes. The golf course was at about 70% of the best I have seen it in the past (only get out here a couple of times a year)... Continue »

Played here on Wednesday 5/5/10. Weather was near perfect, warm with light breezes. The golf course was at about 70% of the best I have seen it in the past (only get out here a couple of times a year). I was left with the impression that the current financial recession has taken a toll on the profitability of the Resort and the ability of the owners of this fine old layout, to do a first rate job of keeping the place the way they would like. The restaurant was closed for renovations and a temporary bar was being used while the replacement facilities are being built. There was evidence of this on the golf course too, needed repairs to the infrastructure of the playing grounds were evident and apparantly being put off due to lack of operating capital. I hope things pick-up for them and this great old golf course.

Just played Carlton Oaks in the Santee City Amateur this last weekend. This course is GOOOOD and difficult! I love the layout and the greens are really fast. I think they had them rolling about a 12 during the tournament. They were a little bumpy though and the course just needs some TLC (actually some money put into it). The greensfees are very very fair for what you get. If they got the course into the condition it could be in, it would cost much much more to play. I definately recommend playing here if you are up for a challenge.

Course was in good condition. They just had Q-school 1st round there. Greens were fast (although I believe they are punching them Monday). Fairways were good, with some patchiness. Same for rough and tees. Now for the bad. There were FIVE 5-balls on the course, and that is just the ones I counted. The group ahead of us was a 5-ball. So was the group behind us, and there was a 5-Ball 3 groups ahead of us. The 5-ball ahead of us was playing the tips, and I don't think any of them could break a 100 from the red tees. The 5-ball behind us was one of the most obnoxiously loud groups I have ever heard. To make matters worse, there were NO rangers on the course. If it was not for the fact that the 5-ball ahead of us stopped halfway to eat, I would not have played the back nine. It was ridiculous. Coming from Orlando where I lived for 14 years, they would NEVER have let a 5 ball out at peak times, let alone FIVE 5-balls. I could not believe it. Before you play the course, I would call to make sure you are not booked behind a 5-ball. It was an EXTREMELY frustrating time.

Play the course on 4-17-09. Fairways and bunkers in great shape. Greens are still recovering from aeration and should be in really excellent shape in another week or two. Very nice layout with some very challenging holes.
