Played 19 Oct, 2008, tee time 6:40 AM, actually teed off after 7 AM. This is the worst course, by far, I have ever played ( and I have pleyed around the world). This course even beats Dubai where you carry a "turf square" around with you and the "greens" are heavily oiled sand. The rate is $45 on the weekends due to course maaintenance during October, which is the usual military rate, but they don't offer a further discount for military. Where to start...? The only cart guy took the key after he picked up our bags and drove them around to the Pro Shop, who didn't have any keys so we had to track the guy down. They switched front nine and back nine but haven't updated the signs or directions on the pavement, though the hole placards are correct at the tee boxes. The tee boxes are severly damaged and look like they haven't been touched or moved in weeks. Thus the landing areas in the fairways are the same distance and are extremely divoted. Plus, any low spot in the fairways had standing water, with a dry drop being 30-40 feet back as a lateral drop was in heavy rough or a tree line. The greens were ridiculous! Out of 18, 5 were average for San Diego with the other 13 being absolutely terrible. Most had severe divot marks, extreme bare spots and were so bumpy that putting a true line was nearly impossible. Add in the weeds and crab grass and the grain was multi-directional causing the ball to take funny turns at times. The only highlights to my round was a 12 on 17 (3 in the water, 4 if you count the one I threw in after I holed out), the buy 5 get 6 beer offer and the heavy handed bartender at the 19th. I am sorry to say, the new owners have effed this course up and there is no light at the end of the tunnel for this course becoming a top rated course in San Diego, especially one that touts "the hardest Par 4 in San Diego." HIGH HANDICAPPERS SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!

Where do I start? I have played this course many times since 2002 and its gotten progressively worse. This place started its demise when they sold the land where the range was to a developer to put up condos.

The course is now under new ownership. The new owners started by changing the front nine to the back and now you start on the back nine. The problem is that nothing is marked accordingly so people were getting lost getting to 10. They havent even updated the scorecards. There is a makeshift practice net at the top of 10.

The pace sucked - they had two groups sitting on each tee box. Most if not all of the tee boxes are uneven. The greens have patches on all of them and have sand filled in. Lastly the tee boxes. Some of the tee boxes were in the middle of the fairway. For instance, the old number 9 uphill par 4 which is now the 18th, the distance for all was 400 or so - the womens tee box is now at 150 yds on the side of the hill.

The course is in terrible shape. The management hasnt fixed anything - they made it like a nightmare. They should start by learning english (new management is from across the pacific).

Will never play this course again.

Looks like aliens landed on some of the greens, very slow and bumpy. Greens looked diseased.

The greens on holes 1-7 were just plain awful - lots of damaged areas. The greens looked liked they had a fungal disease. I hope they fix those greens. It's too bad the rest of the course is just so nice, the greens ruined it.

Played here 8/02/08 and won't go back until I hear they've fixed the following issues:

1. Greens: By far the worst I have ever seen (even worse than Arrowoods). The greens were severely diseased and grass was patchy at best. Tons of divot marks. Probably did more harm to my putting skill than anything else.

2. Fairways: Not the worst I've seen, but definately need some work. Many areas were dirt or dead/dry grass.

3. Tee boxes were in pretty bad shape as well.

They also didn't have a starter, didn't have marshalls to police pace of play and didn't have cart girls coming around. The best part about the course right now is the nice carts that come with a cooler stocked with ice.

This course has a lot of potential and character. Would love to make this my home course as I live close, but can't do it with the condition its in. Twilight was $51.....really not worth it. Only other notable thing was how amazed we were that they actually got the course to fit in the neighborhood the way they did. It requires a lot of time in the cart between holes crossing streets, going through tunnels etcetera.

Bottom line, don't waste your money until management gets their act in gear.

This weekend....the greens were extremely inconsistent. Water logged to where heel marks occurred....spike marks where people dragged their feet....holes that were cut days ago as the cup was all torn up. If you look into the cup, you will find algae at the bottom of the hole...seriously.

The sand traps were pretty wet also...probably from overwatering the greens.

Tee boxes were pretty torn up with divots. Not very level.

If they could get their greens fixed up...it would be a good place to play.

Was trying to get a quick round in so I Skipped the first and 6th holes but played the rest in about 3 hours. Course needs some work, many things are outdated but its in better shape then it was in april. I wouldnt spend the money to play here on the weekend. There are consistent slow people and nothing is done about it.

Challenge for anyone that plays it - Try to drive the 16th par 4 green. I have done it the last two times I have played. Its about 315 yards from the white and doable.

Played last weekend there for twilight. I was impressed by ice box on the cart which kept our drinks cool. The course is tough for a beginner. It was uncrowded and the staff let us start early. There are restrooms and fresh, cold water available along the way. Overall, great value for twilight rate.

Played Saturday 5/31. The course is in pretty good shape. It is a fair test of shot making. The fairways are generally wide enough for driver, although there are some bunkers lurking in strategic locations. Most bunkers were in good condition, except for the little one behind the 17th green. Not much sand over a hard bottom made it impossible to predict the outcome and get it close. But I was the one who went long on a severely sloping green, so...
The course didn't seem crowded but it plays slow due to the tricky situations waiting for a wayward shot. Worth a go at the price.

played 5-11.....coupon $55....great staff....greens in great shape, medium to fast. fairways were great. tee boxes good, only problem was they seemed bubble shaped, hitting uphill....or downhill. for tuesday coupon value of $55, definately worth the money. tests you long irons. would definately play again, and again for that price.

I tried Carmel Mt Ranch again as I read that the previous reviewer indicating that the greens were fast. Well...the green were faster than the sanded greens I played last time....but average in speed.

The greens were average in speed...and not fast...and inconsistent between holes. Conditioning...plenty of ball marks. The holes were beat...where the rim to the cup were no longer round.

The fairways were soggy in many spots where you can see tires are spinning out. And near the greens...they don't mark where the carts should be heading back to the path...and you can see plenty of carts driving greenside....something they really need to work on.

No GPS and the markers are not accurate when you laser scope them....some 20yds off.

Played this weekend... The greens were SANDED because they were trying to speed up the slow greens. Ended up not made the balls roll untrue....but with with uneven speeds. Impossible to score correctly...missed many birdie opportunities. The greens were still slow even with sand.

The tee boxes were also sanded. And many uneven.

Many don't like to play this course because it is considered narrow. I think that is overdone... Played it for the first time...expecting to play 'stickball' in a narrow alley. Nah.

Layout is funky as you have to traverse a bunch of homes. Ignoring that...the course layout is interesting and fun.

Fully sanded greens are bad.

Played 12/31 with my wife. Quick pace, not many 4 somes on the course. Course was in decent shape. A few gimmicky holes. Not the hardest course as long you know where you are going. Long cart rides between holes. Hole #8 is lame. It's a par 4 and I had to tee off with my 7 iron to avoid the water and sand trap that awaits you 200 yds away. I should've just hit driver and flown all the crap. But it was a nice day and spending it with my wife made it more enjoyable. I will not play here again.

Played 1/4/08 @ 11:20. Course is in good shape. Greens were pretty nice but difficult to get right speed & read. Bunkers are thin (must use 60 degree). I don't particularly like the layout but for $25 its well worth it.

I played on a Tuesday morning, paying $39 (check their website for discount) and finished in about 4 hours. It had been about 4 months since I played CMR and the conditions were very good. The fairways and greens were very lush. The first hole was cart path only and #9 is now a demanding uphill par 4, so the course is now par 72. the fairways were wet in a few spots but these are minor quibbles.

Yes, the course requires you traverse the CMR neighborhood but the upside is that you get a challenging, "each hole is unique", golf course. A fun course to play but I'd advise beginners to steer clear given the narrowness of some of the fairways.

Played on Oct 6, just after the aerating. Have to say, the greens rolled better than many non aerated greens I've played this year. Yes, there are some blind shots, and homes left/right of every fairway. And it is a long way between some greens and the next tee, but I have to say it was in fairly good condition. Fairways were aerated in spots too. The meat of the fairways were in good condition. If you got off on the edges, you may see some thin grass, but it's been a hot/dry summer, so it's what you'd expect. Some wet spots from watering, but they were all G.U.R. so just pick it up, drop it and play on. Bunkers I got into were decent. Played as a threesome in just under 4.5 hours. Would have played faster, but my partners are just beginning so we had to search for some balls. Nice clubhouse, nice staff, was surprised it was so open on a Saturday morning. Will most likely return again.

Paid $ 45 bucks due to special rates. I really liked this course, alot of scenic holes and tunnels to drive through. Some of the holes your driving on a cart path next to houses and streets and have a good distance between the holes. I can't see anyone wanting to walk this course. Was kinda soggy in some spot where there is mudd from sprinkler runoff. I was a single and played with three seniors eeer older folks and had alot of fun. Greens were smooth and overall not bad conditions. I would play this track again.

Played last weekend for the 1987 rate which was there I believe the 20th anniversary. We had a lot of fun, although the rate was only $30 so the course was really crowded. Other than the crowd the course was fun and had a few difficult shots to make. That's what makes golf fun is the challenge. Bunkers were a little hard and wet, but the course it's self was very satisfactory. The only part of the trip I didn’t like was driving through the neighborhood to get from hole to hole. Over all I would rate this course satisfactory and I would play there again.

Nice place but one niggle--no range and it was a bummer. We were lucky to some degree. It (71) was very uncrowded, 10:45 8/6/07, and the wind was slight; warm not HOT. Although some older folks slowed us down on 7, 8 and 9. They let us pass at the turn. Never saw a Marshal. Quite a challenging course for us (2'some: 20 hdc and 25 hdc). Some tight fairways, lot's of elevation and link type holes. Interesting layout as you wind through homes and along banked fairways, crossing many streets. If you keep drives in play, you often are left with a demanding second shot. Many lay up holes off the tee and after. There were a few mushy spots on the fairways and bald places, too, but not bad. Don't fly the greens on most holes as the result will be less than forgiving. Lot's of trees, mostly pine. Some water, but placed fairly. Some greenside bunkers are steep and Europeanesque. The greens were good overall (relatively large), but some were a bit wet. Lot's of dual level greens, watch out for the downhill putts and get up the slope or it will roll back--all the way back and beyond! A couple of long 3 pars for us. I liked this course and the 9th hole will soon become a 4 par--this hole has a shared green set up with the 18th. I got an internet rate and it was well worth it. I even had a good day overall. I'm a senior and I (20 hdc) still managed a 92. My partner had a tough day with a 103. If you're near to us in level of play, expect a real challenge, believe me, I got lucky on at least 6 holes. Enjoy.

I was in San Diego on business and brought my sticks. Remembered there was a golf course in Poway and decided to google it. Found Carmel Mountain Ranch CC. Twighlight after 5pm is $25 including a cart. You will need it here as course layout winds its way through the homes in the tract. I mean really winds its way through homes there. Part of the charm if you want to call it that is the constant fear of hitting far left/right and into homes. Passed by one in particular that someone hit into and broke the glass doors. Why someone would buy a home along a golf course is beyond me. Greens in good shape. Not bad but a little slow and bumpy at times for my taste. Fairways have some bald spots and some overwatering but you can tell they are on it with stakes and repair markers in those areas. Fairways in great shape. Sand in bunkers are hard packed but decent to hit through. Tee boxes are flat. Great deal for the money. Just keep the ball in play and you should have no fear here.

I booked a tee time on got to the course early with my group. There were barely any golfers on and we were able to start our tee time 30 mins early. The course is somewhat challenging with many blind shots. accurate drives and definately rewarded. Each hole plays very narrow and playing a long iron may be a better strategy on a number of long par 4s. The greens were very nice and ran very smooth and fast. Many holes were cut on slopes. Carts comes with a cooler which kept our drinks cold throughout the entire round. Lots of elevation changes and be prepared to factor that into your club selection. Will definately play again soon. Pace was fast but it was a Monday. Happy Golfing

Played a 1000AM tee time. A bit wet in spots. On a Thursday, steady flow of golfers, but 1's and twosomes. Cart girl excellent. at least 4 passes as the crowd was not there. Bring extra balls. a few holes are unforgiving for narrow breech with desert O/B and some canyon hazards. some beautiful views. long rides from hole to hole as it's in a neighborhood with little or no connection of one green to the next tee. this helps the pace as golfers must commute hole to hole. I liked it after a while. a challenge of a course. never played before and shot 8 over my normal round at familiar courses. a few deadly greens with hole placement on slopes and few center of green flat shots. it reminds me of scottish golf with unforgiving O/B and hazards. stayt on the fairway and 15 holes are great. 3 are monsters.
A good challenge to good golfers

Played in a tournament on 9/22/07. Teed it up around 10:30 & finished around 3:30. Course is in good shape even though I really don't care for it. Too many holes that take driver out of your hands. It definately not worth the price...there are way better courses to play in S.D. for the same price. Too bad their going to punch the greens. If you are a above the hole its easy to 3 putt for those with little touch. Just play somewhere else!

Didn't like the blind shots on many of the holes. No Marshall, and pace of play was slow. We were a two-some behind two four-somes and they were slow. At the turn all the players were out of turn, the foursome ahead of us disappeared and we ended up playing behind some young men. We had to wait at every single hole. There was a three-some ahead of them and two of them were beginners. Also you wind a lot through the homes to get to the holes, breaks up your rhythm. Expensive to play and no driving range. We won't play it again.

This course can use a lot more room. Too many homes flanking the course. Hardly used my mid irons, just woods off the tee, then a wedge. It's sometimes a "voyage" to get from a green to the next tee. Although in decent shape, it's not one of my favorites.

Booked a tee time for 11:15 through click4teetimes for $55 at the last minute. Got there and no carts were available for us, they said they were booked (not a good sign). The 11:30 group went off before us and I got paired with the 11:00 twosome (again not a good sign). Then things took a turn for the worse, it took 3 hours to play the front 9. I walked off after that and got a 9 hole raincheck although I'm not sure if I'll return. The greens were fast although there are a lot of bad spots on them. What was weird was some of the course was wet while other areas were bone dry. It's going to be a while until I go back.

Played today early in the morning. Golf course was in very good condition - greens were soft but putted very well, fairways generally good, tee boxes so-so and bunkers were still wet, but okay, except a couple were hard near the bottom.

I didn't care for many of the holes - very odd. Interesting yes, but not my cup of tea. Too much driving through neighborhoods between holes, too many short par 4 target golf for me. Not worth the regular green fees for sure, but not bad for the GolfNow.com special of $55 on a holiday. I probably won't be back.

Played 8-24-06. I can describe the course with two words "Dog track". This seems to be the norm with courses ran by American Golf. They always seem to take a good track and hire nothin but illegals to tear it up. When we golfers stop playing poorly conditioned courses and tell the management why we're not coming back maybe things will change.

The course layout and facilities are good but the service is awful. The course is challenging and usually in good shape but getting treated like a valued customer is as rare as one puts. Our group and friends have since quit going to this overpriced course with so many others in the area that seem to appreciate our business. If their attitue was better you wouldn't mind spending the money but for now we will travel around the county where we feel appreciated.

Have not played here since 1998! Very strange driving between the housing communities to get from hole to hole. I was very impressed with the general condition of the course! I'd forgotten how nice this track is. My only complaint was that #9 is now a par three, rather than the "strong" par four it was the last time I played there. I love hitting the second shot into #5. Makes the trip down to San Diego worth it!

A beautiful tight course that really challenges your ability to hit the straight ball. I recommend leaving the driver in the bag except for a couple of holes and bring lots of balls. The price is very decent for the qaulity you are getting. Really need to warm well before attempting to score well on this course. Oh yeah, look out for the houses it's in play on every hole.

I played Carmel Mountain over the winter when we were getting weekly rain and the conditions were incredible. Fast greens and lush fairways. I read that they are trying to sell off the clubhouse, putting green and parking lot because they are having financial difficulties. I played on 8/13, and they are apparently cutting back on maintenance. There are numerous brown grass and bare dirt spots in the fairways. The tees are ragged and uneven. The greens are still pretty good, but when you fix a ball mark (which not enough people are doing!) the root structure is not there. This means they are just watering them and not verticutting or aerating properly. Eventually the greens will suffer from the lack of maintenance. I paid $55 to play on Saturday which, given the condition was too much. I am playing again today for $33 on a time which had been previously scheduled, but if they continue to cut back on maintenance, even that will be too much. I have been playing this course for a number of years and it is a great tract. They need to know that the way to save money is not through cutting back on upkeep of the course.

After reading all of these great reviews and seeing an 8+ rating, I decided to try it out and was quite disappointed. Tee boxes not level, fairways with moderate divot damage, and greens had numerous unfixed marks. Round took 5.5 hours on a Friday and not a marshall in sight. No customer service to even speak of. Obviously I won't be back.

The fairways and rough had a few muddy spots from all the recent rain, and many of the bunkers played like packed mud with small ponds at the bottom. My biggest beef with Carmel Mountain continues to be the unlevel tee boxes. More often than not they are on a slope, and many point you towards the OB. The course rewards those who are patient and don't try to do too much with their drive. If you relax and just poke it out to a good spot, most of the holes are short enough that you can score well. The exceptions are the #1 handicap par 4 5th hole, where a good drive still leaves you with a lengthy shot over a stream in front of the green, and the huge uphill par 3 15th hole. The staff was very pleasant, the beverage cart came around three or four times, and I ended up having a very enjoyable time.

The greens are in terrific shape. Soft, yet VERY quick and smooth. The fairways are a little soggy as the course is re-seeding the fairways right now. Overall, this is a great value at $29 (fall maintenance price).

Carmel Mtn. Ranch is quickly moving up my list of favorite places to play. They aerated the greens last week, but on Saturday most of the greens were rolling fairly quick. Because of the aeration, green fees were only $39 (incl. cart)--a VERY good price for weekend golf in San Diego.

They are overseeding this week (so the discounted price continues -- $29 weekday, $39 weekend) but this course should be one of the better conditioned courses in the area in about 3 weeks.

If you haven't played here before, the layout is a lot of fun: Elevation changes, forced carries, creative use of bunkers & boulders, legitimate water hazards (including two 1/2 greens protected by large ponds and another green protected by a deep ravine/creek), etc.

This course is in much better condition than some of the other area courses I have played recently (e.g., Torrey Pines & Borona Creek)

The overall course conditions right now are good. The course is very wet. There were some muddy patches and really soft fairways. Could have been due to too much watering, but I can’t imagine the course staying that wet since it sees a fair amount of wind and sunshine. The greens are very smooth, soft and pretty fast. Only some slight ball mark damage was noticed on a few greens. Fairways were semi-lush with the occasional brown patch and some thin and muddy areas. The rough is cut short at around 2 inches. Not too penalizing if you struggle off the tee. There were also some muddy patches in these areas. The bunkers are in great shape with good quality sand. Predictable bunker shots aren’t a problem. The tee boxes were all level for the most part. There weren't any that were severely uneven. The speed of play can’t really be estimated since we were stuck behind a tournament causing the round to take about 6 hours. No round of golf is worth taking 6 hours to play, but the uniqueness of some of the holes on Carmel Mountain Ranch made the round enjoyable.

Challenging but fair target track, with a few intimidating looks from the tee boxes for newcomers. Would recommend that beginners and high handicappers play from the gold tees rather than the white tees, or you will be in for a six-hour round. Layout is rather nice, with the golf course spread throughout the surrounding community like a giant starfish, and taking advantage of the elevation changes. Nice use of greenside bunkers to shape some holes. Played on a day when it was raining off and on. Some of the pin positions were on some pretty steep slopes...I'd hate to think of what it would be like to putt during a typical sunny day. Fairways and bunkers in good shape. Course seemed to be drain nicely. Quite a few of the tee boxes were on slopes...hey, American Golf, if you want a faster pace, level off the tee boxes so fewer shots going flying into the houses! I don't like the decision to make the ninth hole a par 3. Marshalls rightfully got on our group's case when we were slowing things down, but did so with courtesy and very professionally. Beverage cart came by with regularity. Would like to play again...hopefully on a day with good weather and when my shots are flying straight. :)

This is really a fun, challenging course. I'm looking forward to the next opportunity I have to play here.

Although the course winds its way through a housing development, the houses really don't ever come into play (except for perhaps 1-2 holes) unless you REALLY hit it poorly. In addition, there are mature trees everywhere, hiding (and protecting) the houses.

For $39 (with cart), the course is in VERY good shape. The fairways were nice & green, the greens were FAST, and the traps were generally in good shape.

Was I playing at Eastlake? Geez, it's almost the same course with hundreds on houses on each side of the fairways ready to be hit. Okay, it's probably a bit nicer than Eastlake. But it's a bit more expensive too. The conditions were very good. The fairways were almost perfect and the greens were in very good shape.

Target golf but done right. Fun layout with some scenic holes. I consider Carmel Mountain Ranch one the better golf courses in SD but it’s a little overpriced on the weekends. Playing conditions today were very good with exception to a few tee boxes that looked recently soded. My only complaint is the large number of homes that border the course. Agree with quaman on the need to layup on some holes. Good golf course. Highly recommend taking advantage of the twilight rates.

Good challenging course. There are some really nice holes on the course. The greens were undulating and the fairways hilly. Need to learn to lay up on some holes as water comes into play if too aggressive

Customer service was poor, but for the price of green fees (w/res rate) with the Red Dot 2 for 1 it's a good deal.

Greens and the course in general are in considerably better shape now that new ownership has managed it for about a year. 13th hole is beautiful par 3 target hole. 14th hole is a killer -- forced carry plays longer than it looks, followed by another forced carry. Criticism -- proximity of homes along many fairways leads to fear that you're going to break a window or kill some child playing in the backyard. Best part is playing the back 9 in the early am for half greens fee.

Great course, plays through a development, and is very well maintained. Fun to play. Testing but not so as to make you want to give up the game. New course so as it matures it will become even more of a challenge. Greens are in great shape as are the fairway. Recommend you play it if you can.
