One of the more scenic courses in San Diego County, Coronado Golf course provides great views of the San Diego Bay, Coronado bridge and the Hotel Del Coronado. Voted as the 2nd best deal in Southern California by Greenskeeper.org users, playing this municipal course is well worth the price despite the hike in green fees from $20 to $25. The fairly new clubhouse has a well stocked pro shop, restaurant and snackbar. There is also a food and beverage cart that rounds the course. The large practice green next to the first tee is very well maintained and can handle a good amount of people without overcrowding. The driving range and chipping green is just a few steps away. Coronado's layout is very flat which makes for easy walking.Although not very long at 6590 yards from the blue tees, it does play a tad longer due to the near constant 1 to 2 club ocean breeze. The greens are very large and are predominantly sloped back to front. The fairways have generous landing areas. There are a moderate amount of well placed bunkers throughout the course so be prepared to hit at least a couple of sand shots. A good amount of trees line most holes which can be a nuisance for wayward drives. About 80 percent of the holes turn from left to right so having that power fade can be a big bonus. Tee times on Coronado are notoriously hard to get so be prepared to wait, and then wait some more if you plan on walking on. Water comes into play on about 1/3 of the holes. Course conditions right now are pretty good. The greens are soft, smooth at times bumpy and moderate in speed. Given the amount of traffic these greens see, the putting surfaces are outstanding. The fairways are moderately firm and fairly lush. There are a few thin spots and some minor divot damage here and there, but pretty good overall. The rough is cut fairly short so poor tee shots aren't penalized unless you happen to end up behind a tree or bush. A few tee boxes have quite a bit of divot damage and thinning grass, but most are lush and only have minor damage. The bunkers are in great shape. They have very good sand quality. The only flaw is that a few players don't rake their footprints after they hit out of them which makes for potentially tough bunker shots. Overall, the course is in very good shape considering the amount of play it gets. Golf course employees are courteous and friendly. Expect to play a typical weekend round in about 5 to 5.5 hours. A very good choice to play for $25 to walk. That is if you can manage to get on. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
