I played the Lakes today 9/20/11. I haven't played here in a long time. I usually prefer to play Ivanhoe. As far as the course goes, it was just OK. The greens rolled fairly well but they were a bit bumpy in spots. The fairways had some bare spots, the sand traps were a bit thin and it looked like they were raked with a plow. For the price it isn't that bad. I payed $25 to walk at 11:22 today. I don't expect perfection for that price.

The real complaint I have about this course is the way it's run. We had a 6-some in front of us that didn't seem interested in letting us play through today. I called the proshop and they sent someone out for us to either break up the group or let us play through. They apparently said we could play through but they kept in front of us. Then they split into a 4-some followed by a 2-some which wouldn't let us through either. Another rep from the course came out later but nothing changed then either. It was just a miserable round of golf. There weren't any course marshals to be seen on the course. The group then went on to play as a 6- some again and finally let us through on the 15th hole.

I guess you just have to know what kind of a course it is before you go ther. Don't expect anything fancy, beautiful, or nice. It's a low level course with ok course conditions.

Played on 8/19/2011. The course is in pretty good shape. They water a LOT during the night, so the greens are soft early on, then dry out fast.

DO NOT RENT CLUBS HERE! This course charges only $15 for club rental -- but they should be paying the golfer to use them! Took two of my out of town guests here to rent clubs and play. Two full bags of clubs -- NO TWO CLUBS ALIKE! Seriously! The Golf Course Manager should be embarrassed to call these "rentals".

Wanted to play these courses together. With the replay rate, it was $62 for both on a weekday with a cart. The service from the golf shop to the starters was first-rate and friendly. A good combination of having a handle on things without having sticks up their rears. Once I got out on the course, I found an average and aging layout that has probably seen better days.

This course is on a level with the average muni. It’s not very challenging and the conditions of the fairway, rough and greens could be described as just okay. The greens were a bit surprising in that I started just after 6 am and with early morning moisture, they were pretty quick. There were a lot of ball marks (repaired, for the most part) and other damage, but they rolled pretty much smooth and true.

The back nine is more interesting and challenging than the front. Please note that there is no “turn” at the turn. You proceed directly from 9 to 10 with no snack shop, although the beverage cart was around starting at approx. 8 am.

Holes 12, 13 and 14 are worth noting. #12 is a 377 yard par 4 from the tips. It doglegs blindly left uphill and it requires a quality controlled drive to have any chance. #13 is a par 3 that can be made ridiculously long if they ever moved the tees a far back as they could. The tips were moved up when I played, but most of the carry is over water. #14 is a 415 yard par 4 from the tips, and I thought bordered on unfair. It’s pretty level, but even with that the fairway was very difficult to distinguish. I felt like I was hitting blindly without a discernable target. There is nothing but trouble/o.b. to the right. Kiss the slightest push or slice goodbye. Best bet is to aim left and hope.

It is quite an odyssey going from 17 to 18. I actually got lost towards the end of my journey between these 2 holes when a sign pointing me to the 18th tee guided me behind one of the greens to a fence and Willow Glen Road. I actually should have followed the cart path to the right and headed towards a built up area that is the 18th tee. Maybe one of the maintenance workers was feeling mischievous.

Went out and played in the afternoon yesterday. While the course is in better shape than it was last year, it is still pretty poor. Though I will give them a break due to the San Diego water crisis, it doesn't seem to be that they water at all! The name of the course is a misnomer as there are about two or three lakes that are barely filled, over all the course feels more like a desert than a lake side. There are many areas off of the rough that were meant to be lakes but are now hard pan and many of the lies in the fairways are very, very thin. The sand traps are still horrible quality, and the bright idea of having no separation between the water and the sand provides many "mudtraps". But the course isn't all bad, the layout is unique (albeit quite easy) the cart ladies are gorgeous and the holes that do incorporate water give nice views. All in all the course is not worth the list price but if you find reduced greens fees it isn't a bad idea to go out and try it on for size.

Played here for the 2nd week in a row as it was a buddy's b-day with the free round, so I couldn't argue. Everything is just as sad as last week. Teed off at 0640-ish and finished just over 4 hours with a 5-some. Tee boxes haven't been groomed in along time seeing all the broken tees lying on the ground and the numerous divots filled in with the sand mix, though there was a groundskeeper picking up trash around the "signature hole," #13. All standing water had turned to mud from last Sunday. The greens were in slightly better shape as people were repairing divots on the greens, however the "sand traps" are a joke with only a couple of holes having the quality of sand (and enough of it) to allow any chance to get out without further complications. Pin placement on several holes hadn't moved since last Sunday and some placements with flag color were questionable, blue or red flag but pin in middle of the green, or white three paces off the front. Had it not been for my buddy's b-day, I certainly would not have played the Lakes again for quite a while. I don't even think the free b-day round can get me on the Lakes again for a long time to give the course a chance to fill in.

Played the Lakes for the first time, walked on first tee time and finished right around 3 hours. Nothing too difficult about the layout and the yardage card, though full of mistakes (On 1 - "2nd shot requires placement in the middle of fairway to ensure an "obstructed shot" to the green) and wrong tips (On 10 - 392 par 4, "players will lay up to then take a well placed shot to the green" when the water plays 266 from the whites and its only 150 to carry the water from the 200 yard marker AND be short of the green) shows the way pretty well for those new to the course. Two of the most exciting par 3's in San Diego? Just becasue it's 165 carry over water (or a bail out left) on 13 and an island green on 16, which is a HUGE 728 sq/yds, doesn't mean their exciting! The tee boxes were strewn with HUNDREDS of broken tees, every green had 10-12 pitch marks, standing water on many holes, muddy cart paths and ZERO sand in the traps, just hard-packed dirt, makes for a not very enjoyable round.
I will say the staff is very couteous and knowledgable and willing to take care of the customer. No drinkable water on the course nor cart service so bring your own and don't even think of getting coffee before 7 am. All in all, I won't play this course again for several years until it fills out, hoping it finally reaches the idea of what the designers envisioned when they started on this project.
