Corporate outing with a customer on 4/30 on a cool and windy day. The par 4's and 5's fairways have a funneling effect that takes errant tee shots and funnels them towards the fairway. The greens were smooth without divot damage and the fairways were immaculate. Sand traps had consistent sand in them with deep bunkers requiring precision escapes. Great customer service from checkin to club cleaning to the warm towel for a cool day to clean up at the end. A very enjoyable experience that I could not afford on my own.

Maderas is almost always in good shape--and right now is no exception.

I hadn't played here since the fires. Unfortunately, the bridge to No. 17 was lost and has not yet been replaced. (Another bridge that was lost appears to have been very recently rebuilt.)

Unfortunately, the lost bridge to the No. 17 green has also affected No. 18--one of my favorite holes on the course. Currently (at least the day we played), No. 18 was playing as a 400-yard par 4 (presumably) and all 5 tee markers were on the same tee (the women's tee box).

I'm still surprised they don't have any GPS on the carts. But Maderas is always a joy to play.

I played as a walk on single on 12/28. There was a short frost delay, but I was able to join another 3 some at 8:30 AM. The course was in it's typical good shape. My only complaint was that there were several clumps of rye blooming up through the thick bermuda surrounding the greens. This often made it a challenge chipping around the greens. I shouldn't complain seeing as it is late December.

I have a Maderas Preferred Club membership card. It's a good deal if you enjoy playing at one of the finest courses in the County as much as I do. with the card the green fees were $80.

The fairways and bunkers were in fantastic shape. The greens were smooth and rolled true. They were not as fast as they usually are, again a symptom of the winter. The greens were rolling at about 10.5 as opposed to the usual 12+.

Although I didnt happen to play that well this particular day, it is still one of my favorites.

Staff is always great there and the price helps ensure that the course is populated with serious golfers. Consequently, the pace of play - even after a frost delay - was great. My 4some finished in 4 hours 15 min. We only had a short wait on the 4some in front of us on 2 holes.

Go and enjoy.

I played a week after the fires and the course was in great shape. The only problem seen was a walking bridge to the 17th green that burned during the fires in souther CA. Another great Troon course.

Played here on 11/10/07 Greens were fast, but the true. The fairways were in great shape. Unfortunately due to the fires some of the tee boxes were moved, and bridges burned out. But overall a great experience.. Kinda pricey though..

Played on 9/28/07 at 11:00. Staff was great as usual. The tee boxes were being scalped in preparation for overseeding. The fairways are also being prepared to overseeding, so there were a lot of dry and bare spots. That was a little disappointing as the fairways are normally a real bright spot. The greens were lush and green, but they were a lot slower than they usually are. The bunkers were in great but it looked like a couple of them had recently been regrromed with new sand (13 and 10), which meant they were a little on the fluffy side.

They will be going through major winterization over the next couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to the course being back in it typical great shape.

Played 8-25-07. Course was in great shape as usual, fairways were green and pretty lush and the greens were fast and rolled true. This is now rated the #5 golf course in california, and it's not hard to see why. The layout is very challenging, with lots of elevation changes, uneven lies and forced carries. If you want to find out how good you really are, play the back tees here, you won't find a more difficult course. Service was great as usual, as was pace of play. The big downside, unsuprisingly, is the price, $165 is big money (to me at least). I know other top courses charge this amount and maybe I am just biased because I don't think any course is worth this money..... However, if you get the chance to play here, do so, it is a brilliantly designed golf course that is almost always in perfect condition.

course is in decent shape. typical overwatering for the hot summer days. tee boxes on the back nine are sanded and soggy. greens are smooth but not very fast. great layout and challenging from all tees.

Well, they really should be paying me to play here....with all the rave reviews I leave about this golf course. Played on 7/6/07 as a walk on. I was able to quickly join another 3some and we got right out there. We never had to wait on a single tee box. The group in front kept up a great pace on a tough course. Similarly, the group behind us never pressed us. We completed the round in 4 hours and 30 minutes. Pretty good for a bunch of hacks out there.

I played the blue tees - at 6654 yards. The fairways and tee boxes were in great shape. We got a lot of roll out of the fairways. There was a pretty good breeze blowing out of the west. It made number 5 a pretty tough hole blowing the ball from right to left.

The greens were in good shape - they rolled true - but were slower than they usually are. I know that the greens are due to be punched again next week.

Go and enjoy. It's one of the few $100+ courses that I think is worth the money.

I played here in the afternoon of 5/17 as a walk on single and got paired with a couple of out of towners. We had a great round. I've played here seveal times and I love the coruse. You may want to consider investing in their players card. For $300 you get a "complimentary" round and 50% off on their regular rates. I'm sure that once you play the course you'll want to come back often.

I played from the blue tees, but the fairways were rolling hard and fast, so it seemed shorter than the posted 6654 yards. If you're familiar with other Johnny Miller designs, you'll find a lot of risk / reward opportunities. Pay attention to the wind and the slope of teh hilly fairways as you can hit a solid shot but be disappointed with the result. Example - Hole # 5 is a long downhill (460 yds) par 4. The wind will usually push your ball from right to left. Either hit a fade into the wind or aim at the forward aiming post and watch your ball move left and roll nicely down the hill. Don't be surprised if your 250 yard normal drive doesn't roll to 280 or 300 yards down the hill. Be prepared for a downhill lie on you second shot and be mindful of where you land your ball on the green. I landed my ball in front of the green rolled to 5 feet of the pin....but on the other side of a berm and my ball rolled to the back of the green.

Anyhow, the fairways were in great shape, however, it would be nice if more of the golfers filled their divots. The greens were also in good shape. you could see that they had been punched several weeks earler, but they still rolled true, but slower than normal.

I highly recommend the course

The Usual Suspects returned to S.D. a second time for the St.Paddy's Day/March Madness Trip and voted Maderas the best in S. D. If you'ved been to San Antonio and played the Palmer Course @ La Cantara you know how good this course is.The only negative was a large outing slowing play. Better than LaCosta, T. Pines North and Barona Creek.

All I can say is "wow" - Maderas is awesome. The last time I played it was right after it opened 7-8 years ago, but it's exactly as I remembered - perfect tee boxes, immaculate fairways, great greens. It's not that long, but the course defends itself well with a number of uneven lies in the fairway and lots of levels and undulations on the greens. Great service from the bev. cart and the snack bar, the starters, marshals, etc. Overall a great experience, especially considering we paid $110 each on a Saturday using a friend's athletic club membership. I'd play Maderas every weekend for that price. Probably not for retail $, but I'd have to think twice about it - the course is in that great of shape. Probably the best conditions I've seen in SD county in a year or two.

Played a twilight at 12:30 and we had to skip a hole to get this in. The price was $75 for a weekday. The greens were fast despite what they look like but most of the tee boxes were moved up which took away from the course a bit. There is no rough because of the winter conditions. I have to say I was a disappointed by the course. There are coupons in the paper for some discounts but I don't think I would pay the regular rate here its pricey.

A real challenging course and worth playing a few times. In immaculate condition except that the rough is just that, rough, and very dry and bare at times.

Played the day after Christmas. Fairways, greens, and tee boxes were in great condition. The service was also excellent, complete with courteous service. The pace of play should have been better, but there were some rangers at "problematic" holes to keep the pace going. The course is expensive, but even at the high rate, it's a better deal compared to La Costa.

Played course yesterday, October 26th. Looked like they just overseeded a couple of weeks ago as the fairways were a little shaggy. However, the course was in phenomenal condition, the greens were running a little slow (we have a stimp meter) at 8.5. This is an absolutely awesome course. We played from the black tees (7000+, 143 slope and a 75.2 rating). Good course from the tips...just need to hit the fairway and you can score.

Course is a gem for anyone to play...highly recommend if you are in the North San Diego area....

Found this course recently. Played here twice in two weeks. This is one of the nicest courses in Southern Cal. It isn't long, but requires you to think your way through the course. Is forgiving on wayward drives as long as the big banana doesn't appear. Grass range with unlimited balls, decent putting area, but did not see a chipping area. Great track.

PS: the San Diego resident rate is available to Orange/Riverside residents as well.

Very nice track, but Troon expensive. Gorgeous views on every hole and bazillion dollar homes in the background. Liked the course alot. Good lunch after the round and great staff around the club house.

Maderas is a fantastic golf course!!!! #1 in San Diego and #6 in California according to Zagat survey. Conditions were outstanding and the customer service could not be better. This golf course is rather forgiving off the tee but there are several ravines to deal with with approach shots. Lots of elevation changes particularly the par 3s with almost all of them being downhill. Beautiful houses line some fairways and these houses add a touch of class to an already prestigious golf course. Weekend rates at $130 is quite a good deal considering you get range balls, divot tool, bag tag and yardage book, not to mention an awesome golf course with great staff. Get out to Maderas this week while the weather is perfect!!!

Played Wed, 9/1...This course is the greatest golf course I have played to date, in my golf life. It's better than Pelican Hill and the private Shady Canyon. Every aspect of this course is in great condition. The environmental areas were not difficult to retrieve balls, as you shouldn't, but it's easy to do. There are multi-million dollar homes that decorate this course, but they aren't a nuisance. There are water coolers everywhere on the course. It's a little pricey but worth the green fee. Driving range included in the greens fee. It's a MUST PLAY in California

This course is very difficult. Beware. Bring a lot of balls. The conditions were excellent, although the greens were relatively slow because of yesterday's rain. The course is not as scenic as some other courses in San Diego. It was $65 after 12:30 and I played 17 holes. Overall, it's a very nice course.

Maderas golf club is in perfect condition right now. I took advantage of a holiday deal they are running until the 24th. From 11 – 1, Sunday – Thursday the rate is $80 for residents and non-residents. $80 for 18 holes on this track is an incredible value. The normal resident rate on the weekend before 11 is $125 so you can see the saving. I’ve played Maders golf club probably 4 times now and it’s my favorite golf course in San Diego. I completely recommend this course to everyone. Tip – don’t try to overpower this course. It will take great iron shots, good putting, and STRAIGHT but not long drives to score.

Top course in San Diego inland and top 3 in the county. Spectacular condition, large and fast greens, plus you use every club in the bag. Do not play from the tips the 1st time.

Played April 24. Fairways absolutely flawless. But the greens, way too fast, probably burned out from earlier Santa Anas. Maderas greens are tough enough but it was ridiculous and unfair.

Still the best practice facility I've ever seen. Probably the best in California.

Fabulous Layout. First Johnny Miller course I've played and it was totally impressive. Every aspect of the course was in pristine condition. Played from the Maderas tees and it was very difficult, but not unfair. Many beautiful elevated tees. Beautiful landscaping around most of the green complexes. Fantastic service. This is a new must play for me.
