Played 4/13, 8am shotgun, 5:45 round at the back end of the shotgun. Course in pretty good shape. they punched about 2 weeks ago, small holes, and while still healing, greens rolled true.. running 10 on stimp; greens are HUGE. overall a nice track, challenging yet fair; great staff; i would be upset, though, if i paid their $$$$$ rack rate and had to play behind a tournament... maybe call and make sure that's not happening. a very nice track with a first class experience overall.

Made it out to Maderas to take advantage of the free birthday round for playing partner and accompanied with paying guest. Price paid was $172 which is less than the rack rate of $210.

Customer Service/Facilities- Check in went smooth and gentleman behind the counter was very helpful and friendly. Our first time playing here. We were directed to the all grass driving range with range balls stacked neatly into pyramids and plenty of grass to hit off of. Exact yardages to flags on range as well as a large clock but that wasn't needed as the starter came to get us 5 min before our tee time. Starter was super nice and helpful with tips about playing the course and gave us a yardage book which came in handy all day! Thank you Maderas!

Tees- Perfect. Not a single complaint from Alaksana (forward tees) or myself (tips). All boxes in between looked to be immaculate as well.

Fairways- Green and lush and provided perfect lies all day.

Rough- Thick bermuda and most of the time the ball would settle down into it make a clean strike a must to get it out cleanly. Was a 50/50 mix of brown turning into green coming out of winter. No thin areas that we saw. Lots of ESA a few feet from the rough so best to be accurate and take less than driver when available.

Bunkers- Beautiful white sand and a real pleasure to hit out of both fairway and greenside.

Greens- Best greens I've played in a long time. Starter said 10.5 to 11 on the stimp but still found a couple of occasions where downhill putts came up short. Probably closer to 9.5-10 but definitely rolling true and smooth. Very firm and almost impossible to make a ball mark. Balls would release even the high lobs so be aware of that. Large greens with tons of undulation so pay attention to the pin placement and take appropriate club to leave shortest putt possible. Plenty of 3 jacks out there if you're not careful.

Misc- POP was a long 5 hrs + 15 min today mostly because many people were struggling on the greens today. The groups in front were clearly having difficulty with the speed and undulations. The layout is spectacular in the canyon setting with lots of forced carries both off the tee and on the approach. So peaceful and quiet other than the wildlife. Heard a lot of wild turkeys out there in the bushes. For those of you that must know the beverage cart was out there but only the back 9. About 2-3 passes on the back. Loved the course and will be back hopefully sometime soon!

A first class operation on an amazing layout. So much fun, it is one of those courses where you do not want the round to end. It keeps giving you hole after hole of beauty and challenge, you can easily lose track of what hole you are on.
Four of us GKers played on Feb 7, with 0915 tee time. Faultless check-in and well attended bag drop with friendly helpful staff throughout the posh clubhouse.
Get a yardage book for sure, as no GPS carts.
Good reviews below on conditions of course & prac-fac. Only adding comments about the perfect greens. Sure, lots of undulations and difficult to read (and putt), really fast but tremendous fun. We had lots of laughs during the 4.5 hours, on a busy day.
If you are looking to treat yourself, take in Maderas.

For a person who has a 10 handicap (around) and don't get out often, I usually pick a course which has a little challenge to it. Boy, did I picked a right one! As soon as I arrive the course, I was followed by one of their employee with a cart. And when I was getting ready to tee off, the starter came over and told us what to look for and how to play certain holes. That was the first time I was ever told how to play the course. And it really did make a difference! Besides all the nice staff on the course, the course itself was in excellent condition! Even though the course is in San Diego and also in the mountains, some of the holes even had the desert feel. Personally I thought it is amazing!
Being in San Diego, I get to play Torrey pines a lot of times. I think that it is way over rated! If I can pick between Torrey pines and maderas, I'll pick maderas any day of the week!!! And twice on the weekends!!!

I played this course with shebylo, his wife shazza, and xdragon75x on 2/7/13. Thank you Sunny and Sharon for the good time on the links. Weather was light wind with temperature around low 60's. I ran late so did not get to use the driving range but there were 18 hitting slots between 2 tiers. Practice putting green had 4 flags but there were other places you can practice putting and chipping green next to the back tee on the first hole was very nice touch for those of us who wants to chip around while waiting for the group in front to clear. Tee boxes were well maintained with level lies at every stop. It was perfectly even and very dark green that just looked like one of those fake artificial grass. Fairways were in excellent shape with very little browning if there was any at all. Being Winter season, they did not over seed so bermuda rough were brown but I personally liked it since it was easy contrast between rough and the fairways. The fairways are narrow here and the greens have fairly severe undulation so do take a look at the yardage book to make sure where your bail out areas are since its a tough 2 putt if you end up on the wrong side. Staff was very friendly and took care of our every needs and even checked to see if pace of play was ok when the group in front of us got held up for few holes. Kudos to the staff. Overall, I enjoyed this challenging layout where you were forced to carry hazards and need to work the ball a little bit for ideal tee shot. Greens were challenging with moderate to severe undulation with fast speed. Down hill putts were very tricky since it didn't stop and kept rolling while uphill putts I couldn't get to the hole. If you're looking for a challenging course to gauge your game, this is the place to come. I hope to be back again at later time to reassess my game.

I got to play a week ago in a tournament for $75 which was a treat for this high quality course. We started the tournament 30 minutes late due to a slow playing morning tourney but the staff was great and professional. The course is in winter/dormant conditions and it was mostly just an aesthetics thing because the course was in outstanding shape. The greens were near perfect and the rest of the course was really great. I can't really complain about anything except maybe hoping for better weather and a better golf game. :) The cart girl came around numerous times. I really like the layout of this course and I'd play here all the time if I could afford it. There is great variety in course design and elevation changes. I'd rank this course among the best in San Diego and would recommend playing it to anyone without reservation.

Played 1/30 12 pm 4.5 hrs. Took advantage of the Birthday special. Free round with paying partner. We split the cost so it was $72.5. Course is in very good shape. They recently dyed the fairway's green. Seems kinda cheesy but it looked good and even though the fairway's are mostly dormant, they played soft and had really good roll. With the green dye it really seemed like you were hitting off of lush grass. Greens were in perfect condition and rolled fast. The practice green was not near as fast as the course greens so it took a couple to get the speed down. These greens have a lot of break, especially at the speed they were rolling, so I had trouble reading enough break in them. T's were perfect. I was in one trap and it was soft. This is another one of my favorite courses. It is a great test from Tee to green, mentally and in shot making. Even from the Blues at 6,600. There are a couple of holes where less then driver, even hybrid, is required from tee. It's normally a little out of my price range but with a good deal it is a very nice treat. If you have not played this course it is a good one to add to the "want to" list.

Got out early today and made my way down to San Diego for a round at Maderas.
Players let me tell you right now, make sure you play the right set of tees or it will be a long day. Played from the second set today, a little over 6800 yards and boy was it a mistake. The winds were up a little bit, but that in know way is my cop out. I normally play 6600 max but decided to be a fool today.
The course is in great shape, greens were running about 10 or slightly faster, with some really hard breaks, many were two breakers and some even appeared to go three ways. If you like this kind of green then you will love these and I really did, forget about the Three putts just being on them is great adventure.
Fairways were smooth and had terrific lies all day, lush and with no hard pan that I could see, yes you find many that are above or below your feet, which I hate, but there is no excuse for not picking it cleanly, so that did not work for me either.
The rough is possibly 3-5 inches and full with about a even amount of balls that st up and nestled down, take one or two clubs more if its down or if the wind is in your face.
The bunker condition is possibly the best I have ever seen, if you hit into them high on the greens you can expect a little bit of trouble getting out, not going to find a nice hard pack here my friends oh no, all your skill will need to be on display for these gems, and the fairway traps, WOW, be smart just try to get out and advance your ball what is reasonable for what you have, don't try and muscle it out further than you need to.

This is a great course and would be a great place for a GK event this spring, its well worth what you will have to pay but make the drive and play it, YOU WON'T BE SORRY

Played Maderas last weekend and it was in a great shape despite the fairways and rough being dormant. The ball sat up nicely, the greens were fast and smooth, tee boxes where immaculate and bunkers well maintained. Tough layout although. Visually interesting but tough. The greens are very difficult to read and seem to always break in two different directions on every putt. In the fairway it was rare to find a level lie and when you miss them, forget about your ball. There is ESA all over the place and the bunkers come into play on every tee shot and approach. It does not matter what tees you play, you got to bring game. It was my first time playing Maderas and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Besides the course the service was excellent and the clubhouse is beautiful. I particularly enjoyed the secluded remote atmosphere. I will be back soon.
