Played with the boys here on 9-28. The course, facility, set-up, staff -- ALL top notch. From the minute we drove up the Bag Drop was attended and BD Guys whisked clubs to the Starter. In the Club House, the Pro Shop Folks were friendly, helpful, and attentive. Ample area in the Pro Shop and adjacent restaurant to relax before the round. Outside of the Pro Shop, the Starter sits at the intersection of the practice green, range, Shadow Course, and Sky Course. Range, chipping, and sand area are all EXCELLENT. Putting Green was just a little small for my tastes, but rolled true to the course greens.

Yardage markers are on sprinkler heads placed strategically as hole progresses, and stone blocks on cart path make 200, 150, etc -- but we bought a yardage book for $6 that was absolutely helpful. Although the greens were recently aerated, we found them to roll quick and true. Not too bouncy, all things considered, massive undulations. We absolutely took our time with green reads as visual references were often deceiving. Trust your senses and equilibrium for putting. Fairways were lush. Sand was a little heavy for my taste. Course is visually stunning. It's absolutely breathtaking. Course itself is challenging without being impossible. Two or three bling shots, but if you can hit the ball well and place shots within 25-30 yard window, you will score well. YOU MUST avoid green-side bunkers that fall below the hole. On several greens we noticed green-side bunkers below elevated greens that would be impossible to come out of. The elevation change was 25-30 feet on some. Brutal. The par 5's are very challenging. Disappointments were few. The only one that comes to mind is the t-boxes were not all level. Why this course is rated below the Sky Course I don't get because this is a monster course that was great to play. Although the views and course were great, this is not a high handicappers place at all. Too many forced carries from the Golds. Overall, I give Lost Canyons 4.5 Scottie Camrons out of 5. I will definitely be back again!

Played Twilight today for $50, not a bad deal.. Managed to finish in 4 hours (would've been faster bad a terribly slow group in front of us, and no marshalls to be found) On to the course, I haven't played here in about a year and a half and boy o boy it's still a challenge!! The tee boxes are in great shape and some of the holes have blind shots.. When the wind is going that corridor is nasty tough.. The fairways are nice and green very lush especially for this time of year.. I really enjoyed the greens, fast and firm.. My only beef was the ball marks, the place was littered with them.. No one wants to fix their ball marks anymore!! The traps were in good shape not overly hard but still a challenge.. Worth the value and I definitely won't wait another year till I come back!!

Don't let Pete's visual intimidation fool you from the tee. Pick the right club, trust your swing and hope that the ball find greens on regulation. Once you are on the green, all you need to do is to get down on your knee, read the line and pray you make your two-putt par. We have made many trips here with 'Beat the Pete' theme but he drain our brains repeatedly with his greens.

Why you so mean Pete! We figured out your fairways but your greens are impossible. Thanks for keeping the wind under 25mph today.

The course is in good shape and recovering nicely from recent aeration. The fairways could do better with more lush and bunkers could use softer sand.

We shall return at some other time to beat the pete.

Played for the first time today and I had a great time. The staff was very upbeat and willing to help. The views are some of the best I've ever played. If you can't hit the ball straight your going to pay. Overall one of the best deals I think. I will play again for sure!!

Beautiful, but inconsistent.

The greens were generally in great shape, although for a first-time player, difficult to read. (Because of the hills around you, there are plenty of optical illusions.)

The fairways? Hit and miss. Some were very good, but several had patches of brown and were very hard (and I had a morning tee time, so the course hadn't been baking all day!), unfortunately making for more than a few "wrist-ache" shots that didn't turn out as hoped.

It's a challenging, beautiful course, though as somebody who isn't a big fan of forced carries (psychologically, I think these tend to force us out of our normal, relaxed swings because we feel like we need to hit it harder... instead we get tense, mi sh$t and lose balls!), I had more than my fair share of frustrating tee shots.

Some of the shorter par 4s are very interesting, because good tee shots will put you in positions where you have to use different types of wedge shots. Great short-iron practice, though if you're not entirely comfortable with half- or three-quarter-swings on your wedges, you may want to consider "lay-up" tee shots, aiming the ball at distances where you can comfortably take a full swing with one of your short irons.

The rough was also a little inconsistent and sometimes *very* difficult to hit out of, and the fairway bunkers I hit were very hard. Only hit into one greenside bunker, and it was a little on the harder side, but not nearly as bad as the fairway bunkers.

Also, some of the yardages on the scorecard are incorrect, one in particular on a par 3 where the 10-yard differential meant falling short of the green instead of being right on!

Overall, an enjoyable round. I was looking for a challenge, since I'll be playing some difficult courses on vacation in Hawai'i, and this was one of the most challenging courses I've played to date.

Greens are great but the fairways are brown and there are a lot of bare spots. Does not make since the Sky course does not have this problem. Sky course is in much better shape!

Course was in good shape. many bare spots on the fairways. dry and patchy where there should be lush rough and fairways. overall, round was good and greens were very fast. 90% of your putts break towards the valley.

Great weather, windy on the back...really gets windy add 2-3 clubs. Course was in good shape-green, couple of bare spots, resulting with a bad lie, bunker sand varied from decent sand to practically dirt bunkers around the greens, greens were very fast, very firm like a coffee table, couldn't hold any greens. Always a great course, one of the toughest around extremely challenging! If you are a golfer that sprays the ball, you might want to consider another course. Overall, super fun, cool clubhouse, killer sh$t ters, nice facility and staff awesome course, I'll be back for sure and try and give it another shot.

Played this course yesterday for the first time. I knew it would be tough because the slope from the middle silver tees is 136. The first hole had three fairway bunkers right out in the middle and a good size patch of rough stuff up the hill on the right side that you can't hit out of 'cuz it's too tall. If you don't hit mostly straight balls take a lot of balls. You don't have to be far off much either on a lot of holes and there's a few barancas crossing some fairways also. If you play first the first time either play with someone that knows the course or buy a course map in the pro shop because there's no map on the score card. Otherwise you'll be hitting a lot of blind shots and not know which way the fairway is going and there's a lot of all rough everywhere waiting for your ball. Probably some snakes waiting for you too at certain times of the year. There are no stick markers either so you'll have fun looking for yardage on sprinkler heads. Gee folks how much does it cost to buy some sticks and spray paint. I'm so glad the wind was calm otherwise I probably would have left before the round was over. Make sure you have your hitting together from uneven lies. The views aren't all that great unless you like looking at mountains everywhere you turn. They also have signs on the carts saying no outside food or drinks are allowed and the cart girl was coming around way too much. We almost hit into her a few times as she came around some blind corners. At the price and complexity with my low 20's handicap I have no desire to play this course again.

Got out just after 2:00pm Friday afternoon and finished 17 holes. Greens were very firm, good rolls. Fairways generally pretty good, but some hardpan was present. Sand traps varied. Same old beautiful views/settings and tremendous challenge. I like to compare Shadow to Robinson Ranch - Valley. Love both courses. Shadow more forgiving off the tee, but much more difficult around the greens. I will keep coming back until they shut this course down.

Took advantage of the $55 Shadow Course deal and went out Fri 2/22 w my brother and a buddy. We played from the Silver tee's. Weather was a bit rainy here and there for the first 6 holes or so, but then cleared and was just windy as can be. The course is challenging for anyone not prepared for blind shots and tough greens. The greens have different "pockets" on them and if you hit to the wrong one away from the pin.....makes putting quite an adventure. Fairways were great, and the sand was a little packed, but after all the rain that we had the days leading up to it....not too bad.
I have to say that the tee shot on #6 "Pete's Way", was one of the most intimidating shots I have ever played. Wind dead in the face about 25-30 mph, and having to hit the narrow opening between the two canyons was enough to have me almost break my Driver.
The course is definitely one to eat you up if you are not mentally prepared for it. Back 9 is a little more forgiving than the front I found, with some very cool shots played throughout it. "Cougar's Den" is a fun whole as well as "Rifle" but I guess I am going to be partial to #18 - Shadow Pass. Hit one of my best drives to the narrow opening atop the hill crest, and nailed a 5-wood just short of the green. The first time I would have reached a green in under reg on a TRUE par 5. But put my chip in the wrong spot and 2 putted for par. Oh well. Course is a true challenge and left me walking off happy with a 97. I look forward to playing it again on a day minus rain and hopefully a little less wind.

Playing time was great, took a little long on the front due to slow play on our part, but did the back 9 in just under 2 hours. This course must look terrific in spring/summer full bloom.

First off I have to say this review going to be a little tilted because of the wind on the day we played. Played on Friday 2/15/08 and the wind was horrible. we had two of our guys each 6 putt th number 3 hole because the wind wouldn't leave the ball on the green, and it seemed like the hole location was on a level part of the green. The greens are hard and fast, very difficult to hold a shot, bump and run was the shot to use. Since we are in the winter months all the grasses were still in dormant mode so brown was the color of the day, but the fairways and rough were very playable. Traps were in good condition (maybe I say that because I holed out for birdie on #4). I'm a 17 handicap and with the wind, first time playing there, and the course being difficult (136 slope from middle tees), I came away feeling I had bit off more than I can chew. We went to Riviera right after and Lost Canyons made Riviera look easy.

Teed off on the Shadow course on Saturday, February 16 at 11AM. This was my first time to play the course and from what I heard my group was fortunate that the winds were blowing at only 10 mph. For a Saturday I was surprised that we went out with no groups in front or behind us. The four hour round was awesome!!

The Shadow course is definately target golf. It had numerous blind tee shots which made this first timer somewhat uncomfortable. The yardage book helped but if there is time, a drive down the fairway to take a look would be beneficial, especially on 18! The greens are fast and adulating, but roll fairly true despite having an unusally large number of ball marks. Greens did seem receptive despite their firmness. The fairways were spotty and the yardage markers were also spotty. This did not overly detract from good drives in the fairway, however. Tee boxes were adequate and served their purpose.

Staff was cordial and helpful. As a reminder there is no snack bar at the turn so be sure and get what you need from the on course cart personnel. Booked a tee time on-line and paid $75 for this quality course which was well worth a four-hour round on a Saturday!!

Not the "resort course" it once felt like. Overall conditions were very average at best. Greeens are as hard as a rock. Fairways thin and lots of bare spots. The internet special or coupon at $55 weekdays makes for a little better day.

robinson ranch, tiera rajda, and LOST CYN they all are target golf. lost cyn is the worst of the 3 and has alot of blind tee shots, the yard marks are no where to be found??! (BUY A YARD. BOOK FOR $6) the greens are FAST,small and adulating, the course sucks unless you are under a 14 handi. if you want a great course for the same price play moorpark cc its got the veiws but is fair to the avg. golfer also play the muni "semi hills" before this one. this course needs a clowns mouth on the 18th hole!! and that should be a blind shot also! if they bite the bullet and placed 200/150 stakes in the fairway it might help for the people that are playing it for the 1st time, but we know that wont happen at the "GOLF CLUB". one good thing we played in 3 1/2 hours because there in no "turn" snack bar? take what the cart girl has or starve........

I teed off yesterday, Saturday, at about noon and it was about 105 degrees. I had wanted to play this course for ages, but it was never worth it to drive all the way out there and pay $100 on the weekend. I got to play for $54, and, for that price, it was worth the drive and the money.
The layout is very fun and quite scenic, as the course winds up and down through the canyon. Tee shots are challenging, but not impossible for a reasonably competent player. Bad approach shots will leave diabolical pitch/bunker shots, or likely three putts. The greens are large and have lots of humps and ridges to negotiate. The ball rolls very well on most putts, despite many ball marks.
If, like me, you have never played here, I strongly recommend forking over $6 for a yardage book (good for both courses). It will really help you judge tee shots. I also had an exceptionally difficult time finding sprinkler heads, and they only give you middle of green yardage. The staff was great, especially in the stifling heat. Overall, I had a fine day .

I really like this course. However for a high end course, you don't get very much for your money. Range balls are not included. There were no towels, and when I asked for one from the club attendent he looked at me as if I'd asked him for a free set of clubs. I have played quite a few upper end courses, this one does not rate very high in customer service. With that said, the course is in really nice condition for the middle of summer. Greens were pretty true, the fairways nice. All in all a very nice round. Also I shot a 73 which always makes the course seem a little more enjoyable!!!

I decided to make the trek out to Lost Canyons after I got a $50 coupon for the Shadow Course. I called and was able to make a tee time for a 5 some. When I got there they told us we couldn't play as a 5 some because it was booked. However, after playing as two groups through the first three holes and waving a twosome through on the fourth, we had the whole course to ourselves. For $50, I was really impressed with the course. We didn't see any brown spots, but there were a few spots in the fairways that were over watered (which is totally understandable since its summer). The greens were in good shape. I thought the sand was a little hard. My only compliant was that the cart girl did not have any sandwiches when she came bye. We had to wait about an hour for her to return. I thought the course set up was pretty fair, not target golf like some of the courses in the area (i.e., if your not in the fairway your o.b.). We played from the whites since some of my bros are learning. I like the fact that I had to think my way around the course (not just hit driver on every par 4/5). The best part was that they didn't charge 2 of my bros for some reason. We asked the starter and he said don't worry about it. So the drinks were on those guys after the round. I would play this course again!

Got out to play Lost Canyons Shadow course. I pulled the aeration alert because the greens are running fantastic. In fact the whole course played very well. Fairways lush in most places with an occasional brown spot but in general everything sits up great. Rough in good shape. Sand firm for my tastes and could use a good turn or two but raked nicely. Tee boxes lush but in some cases there was uneven footing. Overall, the course is playing great and it’s a steal at $60 weekday pre-twilight which is Greenskeeper.org typical coupon but until the end of July, it’s only $50 to play with the Greenskeeper.org coupon. So get out and play the Shadow Course.

Played Sat at 7 am. Course from tee to green is in fairly good shape. Some bare spots and bunches of grass, but otherwise fine. However, the tee boxes are somewhat spotty with many depressions creating awkward stances. Then the greens. I don't know what is wrong with the #5 green, but they really need to cut out a lot of it and resod it. Most of the others roll ok, but they look like they aren't too far away from trouble. This course right now should be rated fair to good, not great. I play LC regularly (mostly Sky) and this course has been in much better shape in the past.

Played on 5/28 (Holiday). Tee time was 09:45; on time paired with two singles. Course design was superb. A real challenge. At most upscale courses in Arizona range balls and towels on the carts are included. Here range balls were extra and no towels. A minor thing to be sure but it is the small things which mark the truly upscale facility. Fairways were a little spotty, the fairway turf has been invaded by a second grass so lies were inconsistent. The greens were in good shape; rolled true and very fast. All in all a good experience. Course is deserving of its rating and slope.

Played 36 yesterday at LC, both courses. Overall, both courses are in very nice shape with some minor execeptions. Some of the fairways are a little clumpy in spots, yellow looking, and probably a little dried out. Still, I wish I would have spent more time there than in the d%mn scrub off the fairways. Hit it straight here, or pay the consequences. The greens were extremely nice, near perfect except for a couple holes where they appear to be having some trouble keeping the greens healthy. Pace of play was also amazing, no one in front of us or behind us in our 2nd 18 yesterday.

Played 3/23.

Course is in good shape. Tee boxes and fairways were great, but the greens are inconsistant. The first two were in good shape, playing very fast, but #3 was a nightmare. Patchy, bumpy and half bare. It was pointless trying to line up the putt. Inconsitant from there on out.

Hardly anyone out there, which made for a nice round despite the difficult greens. I hope they solve this problem soon, because it's a beautiful course otherwise.

played Fri 3/9, 1pm tee time... mild winds, nice day, 4 hr 15 min round. course is just ok. I haven't played here in 2 years, cuz I felt the course was unfair... no fun... but I couldn't pass up the $40 rate thru online special... and either I'm a better golfer or the course is more playable. They removed several bunkers and other subtle things. For $40, I would play here all the time. But some of the greens are basically dead. Course is not in horrible shape, by any means. but it was far from the immaculate shape it used to be in. I guess that is commisserate with the lowered green fees. I would play again, but since it's so far for me, only for the rare $40 deal.

Played the Shadow Course on March 3 in 60MPH howling winds. The course was murder. Arrived at the second hole (a par three) and found one group on the green and two others waiting ahead of us on the tee. 12 out of 12 missed the green. I hit a fairly high soft fade that hit the front left and rolled off the back right. This is a tough course in any weather, but was impossible in this kind of wind. We played 3 holes in an hour and got to the 7th tee at the two hour mark and finally saw a ranger for the first time. We complained about the slow pace and he said that it was backed up because of the wind. He said we could jump ahead to the tenth , which we did and proceeded to play the back 9 in two hours... much better. It is a very scenic course and was in good condition. The $60 special is a good deal. Posted an extremely high score and would like to play it in calm conditions to see if it plays fairer.

Note to Lost Canyon's staff, if you read these reviews, .....Took advantage of the on going $60 twi-light special. Had a 12:15 tee time on Sat 2/17 and was initially charged full price. When questioned about the special, the Pro Shop attendant replied "Oh, is that special still going on?". My playing partner checked in a few minutes later and went thru the same attempted over charge and lame excuse. Very disappointing.

The course….Shadow was in “OK to good” shape. Greens very hard, but rolled fairly smooth. Some fairway spots were thin, traps were poor. However, the $60 twi-light special made it a great deal. If you are not in one of the first twi-light groups, you will not finish your round. We started at 12:15 and finished after 5:30.

Course staff was rude and sarcastic when asked "tough" questions like, "should we park the cart here?" Steep price tag for the golf doesn't even include a small bag of balls. Greens were like marble (and held just as well) and had a lot of bare spots where it looked like someone shaved them way too thin and killed the grass. Wind was hellacious and unfair. Since greens were so hard, balls blew off the greens. Course is totally overrated. Staff needs a little discipline in addition to deflating their egoes.

Gorgeous setting for a golf course, very removed from development for the most part and at times it felt like I was hiking in Southern Utah. The facilities are very nice and overall I had a great experience. My only two complaints are that the greens often have unfair or even ridiculous undulations and I couldn't figure out how 80% of the holes felt like I was hitting uphill. It should have evened out somewhere or maybe the Sky course is mostly downhill?

When I asked what time winds died the marshal told me April. Rock hard greens plus Santa Ana winds equals no fun. Greens had lots of spotty damage, easy to see why prices have been lowered. Rather get a tooth pulled.

Played the course a couple of times in the last two weeks and as usual it is one of the more challenging in the area. Was lucky not to have played on any of the windier days as had the previous reviewers. I have played here in the wind, and quite frankly it is not really a fair course when the canyon winds kick up.
I do like the hard and true greens, but you do have to factor them in to your shots-an iron hit to the middle of the green might well go off the back.
Service has not been as good these last times out as it had been in the past, maybe this is due to cutbacks relating to the recently reduced green fees.

Played 10/21/06 and must second the last reviewer. We had crazy winds. Wind was so bad that you literally had to run to your puts and hit them before the ball would blow away. At one point one of our group chipped onto the green about 8 feet from the cup and the wind blew it in the hole before he got to put. All of us are decent golfers (1-15 hncp) and I was the only one to keep it under100. If you are going to play, try for late morning when the winds start to die down.

Played 10/19/06, early am, and winds were howling! Factor that with rock hard greens where even an "L" wedge would hit the front of the green and run off the back, and you get the idea. (All four of us are singe digit golfers and nobody broke 90 - 2 didn't break 100) Scoring was in a word .... impossible. The wind blew the balls off the greens, and downwind putts couldn't be stopped on the greens. If it weren't so funny to watch, it would have been no fun at all. but we took it in stride and accepted the "hacker scores" This course is tough enough without gusty winds and concrete greens.

Course was in very good condition. Fairways were nice & the greens fast. However, several of the tee boxes were in bad shape. Gophers have dug holes all over the place, leaving the tee boxes uneven & bump. The clubhouse is always nice & the food is always good. Well worth the $85 green fee. d%mn gophers!!!

Great technically challenging course. Lots of elevation changes and blind doglegs. Not very long, and wide balls are usually lost. Good place to work on course management.

I like to play the Shadow course first off as a twosome with my buddy, but the pro shop decided to move my tee time without informing me. while they explained that they did it to allow the maintenance crew to prepare the course, I was accused of being a liar.

If you want to be denegrated in front of your family and friends this is a good place to play.

Conditions were great except for the bunkers which had hardpack dirt instead of sand. Tee areas were very uneven and rough was non-existent. I didn't like the layout. Six par 4 holes from the silver tees (overall length 6055 yards) were less than 330 yards and 3 were over 390 yards. Only one hole between 330 and 390. The short holes were very gimicky - swales, bunkers, sharp doglegs). A few like this is OK but far too many. The fairways on thre of the par 5s cut diagonally making the landing area difficult to figure. Worse was the blind shots to many elevated greens. Very challenging, different, but I won't be returning.

I played there 8/30 in the middle of the day, and even though the temp was in the mid 90s, there was enough breeze that it was a very comfortable weather. The course is beautiful, and very challenging. Fairways are narrow, with a few blind holes where you can't see the green from the tees (heck, some holes you can't see the fairway from the gold tees). Greens are in excellent condition despite the heat, very tight, very true and fast. Pace was fast, as it was not busy during the hottest part of the day, although sometimes you can see players up in the hill looking for their ball and this can slow the pace down. There is also plenty of wildlife to see (saw two coyotes, one just standing in front of my tee box, another close to a green), roadrunners, and the usual rabbits etc... but beware the rattlesnakes if you do venture to the hills to look for your ball. Bring plenty of extra balls (my playing partner lost all his balls and had to use some of mine) if you have a tendency to slice or hook. All in all, it is a great course, and I highly recommend it especially with the new lower rates for twilight (2pm) and super twilight (4pm).

Played 8/19 at 4:15pm. $50 to ride and have the course to myself, I feel like a thief. I saw one other guy out there the entire round. Played in 3 hours. By far, the most relaxing, serene golf course around. No homes, no noise, just you and the course. I was outnumbered by squirrels, rabbits and coyotes about 100-1.
Enjoy it while you can.

bring your a game to this course or you will get eaten up. i played this course 8-7-06 and had a great time. like others said, you can't beat this deal, in august $30 including cart. the course is set back in the canyons and is very hilly. difficult to play this course for the first time because a lot of shots are blind, and you don't know where to hit. check out the course page and they have some advice on how to play each hole. i must admit i lost a lot of balls i thought were good shots; simply a lack of course knowledge. also, saw some cayote's later as the sun was setting. if you can't hit a club 150 yards more or less strait, you should know that you will lose a lot of balls on the course, especially on the par 3's, all of which require a decent shot for you to even find your ball up at the green. the first 5 holes played when the wind was up which made the course that much more difficult. it settled down later, and i was actually able to drive the green on the 14th, but still a very difficult round of golf. greens are beautiful, very fast, and the sand is a place to be avoided, especially the very deep traps. play this course with caution, you might get very depressed with the quality of your game.

Regarding deals at Lost Canyons, you have to sign up for their email blasts that go out every so often. I got one yesterday and one today that have amazing deals. Throughout the rest of the month, Shadow is $30 for super twilight starting at 4:30 Monday - Thursday. You can almost finish 18 in three hours if the course is empty. That's a deal I will be taking advantage of at least a couple of times.

I must disclose the fact that I am very partial to Lost Canyons and a Platinum Card holder (unlimited golf including cart 7 days a week for $4,500/year - great deal). It is nice to see some of the nice feedback on the golf course and it is understandable that some players find the golf courses very difficult.

Right now both courses are in great shape following the ESPN Celebrity Golf Classic played in Mid-July - Shadow was punched on 7/19 with small tynes and is completely healed, holding and putting nicely. Bunkers have been slightly wet due to the watering necessary...

Overall the Shadow Course is a great value with the specials they are offering - it is hard for me to compare a Pete Dye designed course in the mountains for $49 with a cart to any of the courses in the area.
Give it a try if you have never played Lost Canyons and if you haven't played it lately try it right now - the greens are beautiful. Greenskeeper deals look like a good value...

Played this course again on Thursday the 27th. Sand traps were in slightly better condition than last time, but still wet in some areas. Beat the heat by getting out at 7:45 AM and didn't regret it as the temperature got higher and we were off the course by 11:30.
Play was wide open and service was excellent.

Played this course for the first time July 6th and came away amazed. I had heard so much about it being overly difficult and over priced that I had not played until now. What a mistake! Although the course is exceptionally challenging, I found it about on level with Angeles National and only a bit more difficult than Robinson Ranch. No more expensive than other courses on weekdays (Hint: check this site for specials that make it less expensive!) Course was in excellent condition and play was 4-1/2 hours for the round. One significant problem was the sand traps. They were all wet with no exceptions and a couple were in such poor condition puddle-wise we had to allow one of the players to drop in another area of the trap with no penalty on two occassions. Let me add that it hasn't rained in a week so this was clearly the result of improper groundskeeping.
As for comparisons by others to Moorpark CC, which I have played numerous times and I like, this course is every bit as good if not better, and the service is MUCH better. I will be playing htis course more frequently and Moorpark CC less now, and I look forward to playing the "Sky" course in two weeks.

Completely disagree with NOODLE. Don’t think he even played the course. I’ve been playing the Shadow Course once a month at the $49 twilight Tuesday / Thursday special and it’s much improved from last year. Entire course is in very good shape. Hate to say this NOODLE but after reading all of your gleaming postings about Moorpark CC and now a bash on Lost Canyons, it appears you have a hidden agenda. Claiming Moorpark CC was better then Bandon Dunes, now that was ridiculous.

Gone downhill since last year, in spots it looks like its over played. Tee box markers are crooked from greenskeepers not putting back in place...some hole the box maeker was missing. Had no water in my ball washer and there are none on the course. Hardly any ice in my cooler either. For a great course not quite playing the part. Saw one player barefoot. Excellent design and must be courageous to play. I believe the locals are beginning to play elsewhere now for the money....

Tee time was scheduled for 7:35, but had about a 20 minute delay because they double-booked some tee times. The front side of the course was in perfect condition. Everything from the tees to the fairways, even the rough, to the greens. Outstanding shape on the front. On the back, there were a few bare spots in the fairways, some of the sand traps were a bit hard, and there were a few greens that had some really bad looking spots. However, the greens rolled exceptionally well all day and the round was a 4 1/2 hour round on a Sunday. That works for me. I really do like this course and look forward to coming back more often.

Took off from work and played by myself on a Wednesday. Course was in very good condition, a few brown and bare spots on the fairways, but nothing worth noting. That being said, I have to state that I was disappointed with this course. It was the first time I played it and I found it to be too tricked-out with too many blind and strange shots. Although I am a fan of more traditional layouts, I understand that any course with the words, “canyon” or “valley” in the title will be of a certain nature. That’s fine. I hold Oak Quarry and Hidden Valley as very good examples of ‘canyonie’ courses that are still fair and playable.
With this course, however, the designers seemed to be trying a bit too hard. I understand about shot making and strategy (if I always don’t practice them) but I think too many golfers will hit legitimately good shots that will still end up in trouble. That is not the mark of a great course or a fun round. My main peeve is against the design of the greens. Every single one seemed to be narrow and deep making for a limited approaches and dire drop offs for errant shots. A little variety please! True, my ball striking that day was tilted on the side of not great, but the consistent narrowness of the greens made for a somewhat frustrating experience.
I think what you are paying your $80 (I had a $65 coupon from this website) for is the scenery, which as other reviewers have noted is spectacular. Even as you ascend to the most elevated tees, you are gifted with the sight not of sprawling development, but of more hills and an almost primeval environment. The service, also as previously mentioned, is first rate.
I have played both courses now and have not found them to my liking. That is not to say that they won’t suit others (based on the previous reviews.) I think of the PGA of Southern California courses in Calimesa and though canyon-like, how either of them is fair and quite playable. If you’re going to Lost Canyons for the scenery and the atmosphere, fine, but for an overall great day of golf there are a number of superior tracts in Lost Canyons’ price range from which to choose.

Played Thurs. Jun 8th course in great shape. Love the varity of holes here. The views are sweet especially the 18th looking down to the green with the valley behind.Every thing was in geat shape greens, rough, sand traps only two tee boxes were un-even and it wasn't that bad. Marshall said we needed to hurry up as we were playing slow. So we finished in 3 hrs. 55 mins as a four-some that has never played here before I guess that is slow HA. So the group behind caught us on the last 5 or 6 holes by the way it was a two-some the were mad I guess at the fact that they had to wait for two people to take their second shot on a par four. It didn't really bother me but give us a break blind tee shots to blind landing areas with sloping fairways mean you might have to look a bit just to find your ball in a swale. Besides for those two saying our four-some was slow it was a great golfing experience. GO PLAY LOST CANYONS NOW!!

I have had the opportunity to play many golf courses all over the country and both golf courses at Lost Canyons are among the best I've ever played. The shear beauty and serenity of the land is so peaceful.
The Shadow Course is every bit the test that the Sky Course is and it is in some ways tougher off the tee. The greens roll fast and true and are designed to be firm.

I highly recommend both courses at Lost Canyons - the Shadow Course provides a great value at $49 for Twilight Tues-Thurs and $55 on Monday. When I think of other courses in the area the Shadow Course is the best value in the LA Metro area. I can't imagine paying $10 less to play very crowded flat courses in LA and Ventura County.

My suggestion is to enjoy the scenery, understand that the greens are supposed to be firm (that's why they putt so well) and look at the strategy on each hole. You don't have to hit driver on each hole and there are definately some holes you want to miss the green in certain areas. Most importantly select the correct set of tees - don't be fooled by the yardage - the course plays much longer than the yardage on the card.

Come out and enjoy the beautiful scenery and one of America's best golf courses - the Shadow Course.

Played 5/20/06 saturday for the first time .Arriving at the golf course the big club house gives you gorgeous first impression.A pretty sum of people on range & practice green having group lessons.Overall tranquille, relaxing & quiet ambient.Greens not healed completely yet(still you see hole punch on greens) but I think LOST CANYON's greens is most ideal for all golf courses wish to have. Fast roll speed ,very firm but equally hold very well mid-short iron shots. Very impressive right now if greens recovers from aeration completely gonna be monster.Fairways almost in perfect conditions & bunkers too.But some gold tee boxes are beated up , had bare spots & some uneven ground lies.Roughs are interesting point here.Well maintained & cutted but kind of grass is weird some holes strong rough grass grab your iron, some other rough let pass below the ball 3 wood shot making fly high shot. I was playing fabulous back 9 , until 16th just 1 over but I encoutered this monster 18th hole(better said monster green side bunker) par 5.From right side of green I coudn't get on to green my 3rd shot the ball fell down to this tall high bunker & I got on green after 3 same bunker shot. And I did +5 just 18th hole. What a finishing hole! Anyway very pleasant round. But $99.00 green fee without GPS I'll think twice at the moment when I call to reservation.

I played the Shadow Course yesterday (Tuesday). The course was so empty that it got a little spooky at times. The tee boxes and fairways were in good shape, but the greens were dissapointingly hard and fast.

We took off work so that we could use a Red Dot, 2 for 1 coupon. I was surprised that Lost Canyons charged us the Sky Course rate just because we were using the 2 for 1 coupon. What!? 2 for 1, but we're actually going to charge you for a course you are not playing. I know golf is supposed to be a rich man's sport, but for this rich man, you honor your coupon or you don't publish it. After we were done with the Shadow, we asked about a replay rate to go on to the Sky Course, since they charged us for the Sky Course in the beginning anyway. The best they could do was $70 each, which I thought was high. We offered $60 and they wouldn't take it. I accept that, but its surprising that they weren't willing to take more money from us on what must be their least busy day. We left to finish our day on another course.

Only the third time I've played here and my opinion of the course has not changed! With the cement hard greens and all the undulations and drop offs, almost impossible to score unless you hit every green. Lots of boogies! A change of pace, but give me a Rancho Park type course any time.

Played the Shadow course on a Thursday. Very interesting and challenging layout. Had the course pretty much to ourselves. Overall condition is good plus. Fairways great. Tee boxes hit and miss, surprising given the cost. Greens hard, hard, hard; and fast, very smooth. I don't normally have trouble stopping a ball on the green, but had an average roll of 25-40 feet from a well struck iron. Didn't seem right. Isn't it enough to have to judge distance, wind direction, etc., without also having to read greens from 150 yards out and 50 feet below them (in other words blind, a lot of elevation change)? Will play again with a discount.

Incredible golf course! Iplayed it from the back tees and it was very difficult but fair. I found it difficult to get up/down when I missed a green. The grrens played fast and firm which made you plan your shots ahead. A great variety of holes from very strong par threes to short pars that made you think a lot on tee.

Played on 12/23 which was the last day of the $69 Shadow special. Felt that the course was worth this price, but I would not pay full fare. Had a ~9:00 tee time and somewhere between the range and the first tee, a 3 club wind came up and stayed with us the entire round. Found the course to be fair off the tee's and fairways (18 HDCP playing from the Silver tee's). However, this course is borderline rediculous around and on the greens. Just about every green has a "must avoid at all costs" half. The steep bunker and greenside slopes will quickly lead to some big numbers. If you are a first time player, you must buy a yardage book or you will be lost (or print out the hole info from the course website). I would like to return and play this course again when the wind is not blowing my hat down the fairway.....

Played the Shadow Course in the beginning of December. The fairways were in good shape but the greens were firm but inconsistent. The one complaint I have for this course for several years is the grounds crew are always in the way and the expected areas show excessive wear. But other than that, this is a great course.

Took advantage of the special rates for the Shadow Course on 11/13/05. This was my first time on the course. I liked the course well enough, but I can't imagine paying full price for this course. No GPS on the carts and finding a sprinkler with yardage marked on it was a challenge. Greens were real nice, fairways were too, but I wasn't blown away by the course, which you should be for the normal prices. There are other courses in Ventura County that are much better deals than this, but I will play here again if there are more green fee specials.

BTW - The wind got pretty brutal out there, and the two guys I played with said it was actually pretty tame. Yikes!

I was invited out by Lost Canyons to join them for their Re-Grand Opening of the Shadow Course. Just a great day of golf. The course was in 9.0 immaculate condition. YES, 9.0 Conditions. For many of us who have been following the hardships Lost Canyons has experienced over the last two years with the fires and floods, to see the Shadow Course returned to it’s former glorious self is truly amazing. I remember when the course first opened and players were required to take a forecaddie on top of a $150 green fee. By the end of the day you were lucky to come out of there spending less then $200. It was quite a pricey yet enjoyable experience then. Now, the green fees are HALF the price, with no forecaddie required, and the course is even BETTER. One of the complaints about the Shadow Course is its too difficult making for a frustrating round. Well, the course is still a bear, but a softer bear. Thanks to Fred Couples many hellish bunkers have been taken out, fairways a little widened, and some undulation removed on a few greens. Again, this course still has plenty of teeth and if you want to score well, you better hit the ball straight, putt well, and make smart club selections. But, it’s not the monster it used to be in my opinion.

So here’s the Deal: 11/8 (today) – December 23rd

Tuesday thru Friday – before 12 noon -- $69
Tuesday thru Friday – after 12 noon -- $49
Sunday – after 11:00am -- $75

This is a smoking deal. If these were the Shadow Course’s standard rates, it would be right up there with Rustic Canyon as the best value in Southern California. The course alone is more then worth the rates. Now add the best practice facilities you will find anywhere within 100 miles, the A++ Clubhouse, excellent service, whole dramatic ambiance the place has, and you begin to understand the day of golf that lies ahead of you.

Some of you may be thinking I’m hyping the course up because they are supporters of our online golf community. That is not, nor will EVER be the case. There is no one who respects Greenskeeper.org more then myself and I would NEVER purposely mislead you.

Go play the Shadow Course at Lost Canyons, post a review, and have a great time!

Tough course for the first timer like me. The greens were the best part of this course. I really enjoyed the round. I will do much better next time I play here, few holes hitting into blind spots. Beautiful day for golf.

I played on 10-21-05 and I have to say, I was not impressed at all. I think that the Course is over Rated and the Green fee is way to high. (Played better Courses for less Money.) Management was not very good, in handling Problems. Fairways should be better marked.

Played Tuesday (Oct.25) morning. We were the first off. The course was in great shape. The greens were extremely firm and rolled true. The greens on the front nine were in good shape. The greens on the back side were a little more worn with ball marks, but still rolled really nice. Overall, I was impressed with the shape of the course. This was an excellent value. This course was NOT worth $150, but it is definately worth $79. The fairways and tee boxes were in decent shape, but most importantly, the grass was mowed closely. It is nice to have tight lies when the greens are firm so that at least you have a chance to put enough spin on the ball to hold the greens.

I've played all over So. Cal. this summer, and this was one of the best outings I've had. The wind was high, but we had a great time and the course was imaculate.

Played twice, once Friday afternoon (10/7) and again Saturday afternoon (10/8). A little course knowledge goes a long way.
If you are looking for a peaceful challenging round, this is the course. No cars, no people, no houses, no roads, just you, some great golf holes and nature. By far the most peaceful rounds I have ever played.
Greens are still recovering from aeration so they aren't very smooth but everything else was perfect.

I played a tournament on the Shadow course on July 16. All 36 holes are back in operation. I have never played here before and enjoyed the course very much. The course was in great shape. My only complaint is that from the White tees I only used my driver once or twice. The Whites are very short (~5700 yds) and the risk too great to use the driver much.

Lost Canyons is in super shape right now. Only 18 holes are open but it is a mixture of the shadow and the sky courses, therefore it is called "Skydow". Great job by the golf course staff and working crew to keep Lost Canyons in its great shape. This golf course is always a challenge and with the price right now, I think it is worth to play at least twice so as to know the golf course a little better the second time around. Views of the mountains were breath taking!!!

WOW, what a course! It is perfect from Tee to Green! Great fun, very challenging and a friendly staff. Worth every penny in my book!

P.S. If you are not a straight hitter bring plenty of balls!

Played the course Sunday, the 13th, as the "Skydow". Front 9 was Shadow 1,2,3,12,13,14,16,17,18, and the Back 9 was Sky Back 9. The holes in play were in immaculate shape. The bunkers were a little wet, but definitely playable. Many of the unplayed holes on the Shadow were ruined, and will need work. Never saw the front 9 of the Sky. The greens were maddening as usual, but in perfect shape. According to this website, they are aerating soon. Not sure what the cost is to play, since we played as a tournament. But if you use the regular price as a barometer, then charging regular price would be fair. I personally hate the Shadow, love the Sky, so I guess I got to experience both worlds. If you like this course, and are wondering whether to play it cuz of the rain, then don't let that hold you back.

I played this course in late November and the conditions were great. It was a rainy day and a light mist carried us through the entire front nine. They took me and my partner with no advanced tee time -- and this was a Sunday! The staff was nice and the clubhouse is rustic frontier Hollywood but upscale with an enticing looking cafe. The overall surroundings were top notch and felt like a real golfers community.

I would rate the Shadow Course as one of the best courses I've played and I've played many, such as TPC Valencia, Robinson mountain, Cascades, Strawberry Farms, Tijeras Creek, Ojai, Coyote Hills, and Pelican Hill ocean, not to mention all of the muni courses in L.A. Many of these courses have their strengths and weaknesses, but Lost Canyons Shadow left me feeling like my brain got the most workout. Many shots I played took a stronger consideration than say some of the above courses mentioned. Tees, fairways, bunkers, greens, played perfectly and looked great. Yes, it has some blind tee shots. So does practically every other course on this level. To me there was some elevation, but not anywhere near as much as some of these other reviewers seemed to have experienced -- and I hate too much elevation. There's enough here that I feel like if I played this course over and over again I would only get better and better, where a lot of these L.A. courses keep me in a holding pattern. When the Sky Course opens I'll give it a shot, but can't wait to get back on the Shadow Course.

Next time I plan to play from the champion tee and raise the stakes a bit.

The bridge is closed going onto the 8th green and 9th tees, a marshall was there to inform us and there were signs around. Pace of play was a little longer than usual because the Sky course remains closed thus all play was on the Shadow course. The Sky course will reopen sometime in March since they have to work on the bridges that had been damaged due to the heavy rains. At least the course did not suffer as much damage as other courses and we should be thankful for that. Course conditions were ok but the strong winds this time of the year made the round much more challenging than it already is. All in all, Lost Canyons remains a good track with improved service and staff.

Played the Shadow course on 1/13. Sky closed due to a couple of bridges support undermined. They indicated it should not be too long to fix them.

Course is in good shape considering the downpour here. They did a great job on getting the mud off the course and are still working getting mud off of a couple of fairways. Bridge closed going to the green on 11 - they just route you around it. Water remaining in a few bunkers but overall the course held up pretty well.

Played the Shadow course today and I must say the golf course is in nice shape despite all the rain these past few weeks. The greens are damp and are holding shots better than before but they still roll very well, the fairways are soggy in some spots and the rough is even tougher now that they are damp. The layout of this course is a little tougher than the Sky course but all in all, it is a great facility that is only 45min from downtown Santa Monica.

Shadow continues to play tough unless you hit well placed shots. Course is in good shape with fast greens.
Traps are also good. Overall-above average.

Played Losts Canyons Shadow, Robinson Ranch valley and mountain, Angeles National, Soule Park and Spanish Hills(need invite) nov 1-6. I give the edge to Lost Canyons but all great. And yes, better than Rustic Canyons which I have played three times. I rate the Sky and Shadow courses equal....what a setting. Need to purchase yardage books for off the tees. I gave $10 to a cart boy for one from each course. There are yardages on the sprinkler heads to the green. Have to book with a credit card but won't cost if you don't show up or cancel....or so I was told. I was told that the no-shows are decreased by making the patrons book with a credit card. Soule Park was a welcome respite on nov 4 th as the other courses are very demanding off the tee. They let us play a fivesome on the monday at Lost Canyons. The course was very uncrowded. I bought a discount from teetimes247.com for 8 people at Angeles National and had some problems with Angeles National accepting them but the people at greenskeeper.org came through for me and put me in touch with Steve Shultz at teetimes247 who sorted out the problem. It was a timebuster for me but a learning process. If you are going to buy discount teetimes be sure to call the course first to see if they will honor them. I appreciate this website as it was a great help to me in organizing the golf week for my visiting friends. Note that Robinson Ranch offer discounts if you are over 55...I would call them for details as I didn't see it written anywhere. Say hello to Brad the friendly Irish bartender at Lost Canyons. Ask him how an Irishman got to be called Brad....good story.

After seeing the previous rating, I attempted to talk my buddy into cancelling the reservation. Played here on 9/26/04. Customer service is great, practice facilities are good and the bar is well stocked.

IMHO, the greens are not the problem here. My putts rolled true all day long and I didn't see a single putt missed due to green conditions. The greens ain't pretty with some repairs (patched areas), but the pin placement was such that these did not come into play on Sunday. That's the good news.

The bad news is that this course has way too many blind shots to narrowed landing areas where most guys hit their balls. Why you couple that with no GPS and inadequate and inaccurate distance markers, it makes for an interesting day. This is a course you either need to play alot or not at all as playing here without full course knowledge is frustrating.

I don't know how the greens can change so quickly in so short of time since the two previous reviews. The greens are in absolutely deplorable shape. Some greens looked like someone had taken a rake and clawed over the middle of the green. Lots of dried-up bare patches. Pits and bumps everywhere and I am not talking about just ball marks. I can't believe the course is even open for play let alone charging the kind of fees they do. Should of gone to Robinson Ranch, Rustic Canyon, Moorpark, or Angeles National instead.

Greens are recovering well from the aeration. Now that the Sky Course is open the Shadow will get a chance to breath again. I don’t think the Lost Canyons courses were built to handle as much play as the Shadow Course got when the Sky was closed for 8 month. Anyway, the course is in pretty good shape now and I see it getting better over time. Stay out of the brush when your ball goes up there. My buddy got the piss scared out of him by a baby rattlerl. We liked the course and will be back.

Great course to play if you want to take a serious beating. Typical Pete Dye tricks with discomfiting angles off the tees, sometimes reasonably generous landing areas, and then greens where you must play to a tiny, highly specific target or simply be out of the hole completely. There is no recovery shot anywhere on this course - it's a "no thinking required" test of pure target golf. You can probably tell that's not my cup of tea, as I prefer a course with more interesting shot values, where you can play different trajectories, try to create angles, and where you can play a great shot to recover from trouble if you keep your head in the game. That said, they keep this course in fair shape, though I think for a $120 weekend round the conditions should be a lot better. Greens were quick but featured lots of unrepaired ball marks; fairways were in great shape and the rough was lush but the tee boxes were fairly weak, and there is only ONE SPOT to get drinking water on the course, which you'll be able to hunt down on your way to two different tees. I'm glad I played it, and it's a beautiful place, but I won't go back.

First, let me say that I have been a fan of Lost Canyons since it opened. Although I have always preferred the Sky Course, I have previously said good things about the Shadow. but after playing the course yesterday, I can no longer find anything good to say about it. The hole layout will always be what it is, but in the past, the conditioning has been good. The course yesterday was in terrible shape. The greens are particularly horrible right now. They either need to reduce the rates to match the offering they have right now or else they need to start plowing some money into maintaining the course. I am hopeful when the Sky course reopens (whenever that is) that this will be a facility that I can enjoy again, but until that happens, I will not play there again. On the subject of the Sky, if one were to calculate the amount of revenue they have lost with no play since the fire, it must be 100x greater than the cost of doing whatever repairs are necessary on the bridges. The crap about waiting for this material or the labor or whatever excuse they are using does not make sense. I am worried that Landmark is not plowing the necessary resources into supporting that facility and it is showing.

Played 6/17 at 2:30 and finished 6:30. Twilight golf starts at 4 p.m. Twilight at Rustic Canyon starts at 3p.m. and Moorpark starts at 2p.m. I have to agree with other players' comments, the fairways are in great shape but the greens (pebbles) are pretty bad. The tee boxes were excellent since I guess no one plays from the tips. Too many blind tee shots from the tips otherwise an excellent layout/view. The par 5 18th is a nice finishing hole provided you're in position for a 200 yard second shot a great risk/reward hole. Overall a great test of golf and a must play for all except for the beginners.

Played mid-morning of Jun 13. If you like billy goat golf, this is your course. It's all elevation, elevation, elevation. Off the tee, on your approach, and all of your putts. Very few level lies off the fairway as well. The fairways were just as contoured as the greens. It's scenic, but not so scenic that it justifies the price. The layout is on the weaker side; No. 18, in my opinion, is an awful finishing hole. The tee shot is ridiculous; huge forced carry into a massive humpbacked and narrow fairway - and even if you're in the A position, you don't have a good look at all. The greens were horrible, particularly for a course of this supposed caliber. Sandy and bumpy. There are many muni greens in better shape. Basically, it felt like were putting on baked sand all day. The practice facility is terrific, as is the clubhouse and the staff. But for the price, the course is not memorable and given the greens and layout, you can do better at other facilities.
