Played Mountain View this last friday and enjoyed the round, as usual. This is an easy place to walk-on and play a quick round at a very fair price. I heard management (control / ownership?) of the course changed about a month and a half ago. Changes in the works? Anyone hear anything?

Thanks for being there Mountain View. After being rejected from the Seabee course because we did not have gate passes, we made a bee line to MV! Played on Sunday, August 10, 2008 with fellow GKers Moneysworth and Kilt1iron. No reservations required here. Just pay and go. Greens were in excellent shape, rolling fast and true. Played from the new SCGA markers instead of the regular tee placement just for kicks. This course is always undergoing some kind of tweak here and there. Narrow tee shots between monster trees, forced carries over water and even some drivable par 4's make for a fast and exciting round. Hey, you won't get country club grass here, but it is grass. Well worth the 20-some-odd buck that you will plunk down.

Played Mountain View today. I'm getting my wife into golf. Bought her some new clubs and figured it would be a course that wouldn't overwhelm her. She played the full 18 for the first time and shot 100 with a couple of do-overs. Pretty good for a rookie out of the gate. I was more into helping her and I still shot my best score ever with my first round with my x-20's. So now about the course. I never used a fairway wood the entire round. It's a very short 5663 from the whites (66.0 and 105 slope). The greens are very traditional (small and relatively flat compared to more modern circus greens of the newer courses you see). The greens were in very good condition. Very few ball marks and surprisingly well maintained. The fairways were completely different than I've been playing lately. Very lush...almost too much like, they hadn't been mowed in a couple of days. Very thick and zero bare spots, but little white flowers everywhere. You really couldn't tell the difference between the rough and the fairway (basically the only difference was if there was tree in front of you). The course is not the most challenging, mostly driver and high numbered iron to the hole. I drove past #5, which was good for the ego. Overall a fun course, not the most challenging, but definitely worth the money. Will be back again.

EASY! REAL EASY!..And makes it look simple!..Might even have the course record by the end of the day!

By the way.....LOVE Mtn View!.....

I took time this evening to read ALL of the reviews.

I have posted multiple times, as well as my playing bud, kviser. We know the challenge offered by lil 'ol Mountain View G.C.

Trust me, it's 18 tee shots, 18 greens to hit in reg, and ULTRA-TIGHT fairways to hit from (that's the turf, folks) to get 'er dun!

What some people tend to forget, is that y'all need a friggin' break from that cush country-club experience to REALLY test your nerve and game.

There is a rater who bags on the course, and probably others would join the chorus ....... I DON'T CARE. Stay AWAY, please. I always comment (kviser can attest), "I'll take Tiger head-up on this course, cold outta his Buick ... NO caddy, NO yardage book, NO practice range. YEAH, he could probably shoot the par 70, but he'd have to work at it." Ya know why? 'Cause these are quirky, deal-with-it conditions. Sand traps with fluffy sand? Yeah, right. Smooth fairway turf ... uh, well, can you say "indoor-outdoor carpet?" Well protected greens on the drive-me-holes? Yep, everything that ain't his usual cup-o-tea.

Bring 'em on!

I love this little hidden gem.

Out Dec 30 early. Course is a bit rough around the edges- with temps dropping into the 30’s nightly certain the GKer is having his challenges.
Validation for what might have been felt by golfers who know this course: the slope as been increased 5-10% depending on the tee box. The back tees now carry the same slope as RRidge with –800 yards…hm…
Greens were a bit bumpy [as a result of the low temps] but remarkably true/held under the circumstances.
OK- so #2 fairway needs some help- the landing area has consistently been covered with many different grasses some of which do not resemble short stuff.
MV remains in my rotation- believe it represents the best value available in VC for weekend golf.

Played on Sunday, November 25, 2007. There is a little fungus on many greens (small, dollar-sized spots). This is typical at this time of year here and at Elkins Ranch (although I did not see it there last week). The greens were soft, smooth and fairly fast despite the fungus. It looks like new (newer) sand in many of the traps; looked fine to me since I did not have to hit out of any. As always, good customer service, and nice pace of play.

Another enjoyable early morning spent at Mtn View.
Greens- are punched and sanded right now- probably done earlier in the week and plain to see they will recover nicely and roll as usual [pure] soon.
Tee boxes- fine.
Fairways- this course will compare favorably during the winter months. Seems like the bare spots are becoming fewer; other lies are nice.
More upgrades noticed around the course- #7 now has a tee box adding an additional 20 yards to the already difficult driving hole [now stretching to over 400y].
Sand trap added to green side #5- good call.
Blue flags now starting to appear!
Played with new found partners who have also frequented MV- unsolicited comments from them also supported this course over other in the area. Maybe it’s simply a mindset or the course fits my eye; regardless, I always have a good walk through MV.

Out early Oct 14th in front of the club championship. When a course is tricked out, it can play many strokes harder. I’ve mentioned before how fast, smooth, small, and sloped MV’s green can be. Save 1 or 2 holes, every pin was placed on a drainage slope or top shelf a few paces from the fringe. Combined with the speed of the greens, it felt the Oxnard City all over again. Rated at 66.0/105? Rrrright…. Likely a last weekend only type deal; regardless the green have come back from aeration perfectly- still the best kept secret in the county.
Relative conditions of the fairways are good. There will never be a consistent ‘rough’ at MV- no need with the narrow, tree lined fairways. Sand/tee boxes are fine.
If you check out the scorecard and figure you’ve too much game for the course, here are 2 suggestions:
1] take your putter and 7 of it’s best friends out to play [I took PW/9/7/5/18d hy/3w/D]; leave your pull cart at home.
2] ignore the tee box stones and play from the actual SCGA marks [this will also get you to some very nice views you’d otherwise miss along with interesting elevated tees]
It’s a par 70. Check your SCGA index against MV’s course rating and let me know how close you come.

Nice enough course (especially for the price), but the new tee boxes (#2 and #11) are REALLY hard-packed and result in some bad shots when/if you bounce the club head.

My only major disappointment is the lack of a driving range. With the fairly long yardage of the first two holes, it does hamper scores a bit, so I would recommend warming up at nearby Elkins or bring a weighted club to swing a bit before teeing off.

Out early Aug 12th. Had not played since February [due to personal injury]. Can see continuous improvement the course. If you are from SB and are accustomed to Sand Piper or Las Posas, etc yes, you can be derogatory. However, for $27 to walk on a weekend, I’d still advocate this course over many others in the area and guess what? Every green I came to [first one out] was perfectly mown and manicured…:

#2 back tee – now makes this a monster 600 yd [appx] par 5. really like the elevated tee there that challenges the OB line.
#11 back tee – going to turn this into a very interesting 350 [appx] par 4. This was a good golf hole before – now becomes really good.
Signage is improving which will help keep the grounds in better conditions overall. Still, the most severe damage to the course is due to player abuse – cart tracks in wet collection areas – geez. Most of those spot will not affect your ball. The greens remain some of the most challenging in the area – small, domed, and very fair. Depending on pin placement, you will be challenged to get it close from any yardage.

Again, I implore the keeper – implement a front/middle/back flag system. I understand the greens are small – and that is part of what makes the course good and fun to play. However, with tree shadows, depth perception is distorted. Your greens clearly protect the course and with at least a front/back system it would make it more fun for a bogey golfer like me to take dead aim at the flag. Examples from Sunday:

#3 – from the tee box looked middle, actually front left.
#8 – even from 85yds hard to tell [slightly elevated green]
#9 – from 100yds, appeared middle. Was back actually behind the spine line…arrgh.
#10 – another slightly elevated green – from 60yds – or the tee box – impossible to ‘cipher’,
#11 – with a 40yd elevation + domed green…well…..
#14 – very nice spot – maybe 5 paces from the back right, but even from 50 yds, I could not figure that out – this set of holes [11-12-13-14] with early AM sun is really challenging through the shadows without flag indications.
#17 – from 150 no way to know the flag back right.

No, this course should not be rated ‘great’ – it’s a good course that is a great value. I insist it’s a challenge from anyone’s golf skills regardless of how far you hit it and after playing WL on Thursday, still feel Mtn View is the best course of it’s type in the county.

Played Friday afternoon, 6/15/07. Steady wind out of the west at about 20 m.p.h. About 15 degrees cooler than inland. Gotta love that. The course is in pretty good shape visually, but the greens were a bit bumpy on the front nine, a little smoother on the back nine. I noticed new championship tees have been built on 2 and 11. I didn't try them out because a) the rocks that are used for tee markers were set forward, and b) I probably don't qualify. They look good, though. I saw something I have never seen here before: a gardener with a cart, picking up debris and doing general maintenance. Outstanding! Greens were soft and receptive and fairways were well - moisturized with few overly wet or dry spots. All in all, it looks like things are improving here in Santa Paula.

Played this little course today and it was fun. Greens have holes all over but roll MUCH better than most punched greens.
This course will boost your EGO big time. Lots of short par 4s and even shorter par 5's. I broke 80 and hit more birdies than ever today but its unfair to brag about score on this course. Its just that easy.

Not many ups or downs, trees come into play heavily around the course, sand traps are hard but they dont come into play much. Some water around but its not much of a problem. A true ego boost course for long hitters

Played here today, 03/25/07. Course conditions are about as good as they get for this course. Few, if any, wet or bare spots in fairways. Sand not compacted. Greens soft, receptive and rolling fairly smooth and true. No excessive ball marks on greens. Could be a light indication of a fungus on some greens, but not affecting roll.

Played on President's Day, 2/19/07, for $12 to walk (afternoon rate). Somebody had taken out chunks of the green at 1 and 18, right next ot the holes. Anger management classes for that person. A better maintained golf course would have moved the holes and repaired the damage. Oh well, you get what you pay for. Other than that the greens were smooth and fairly fast and firm. Tricky pins on 7 and 13 lets balls roll off back right. No reservation and finished the round in 4 hours and 10 minutes.

Played Sunday the 18th early. Seems there is a short course in people’s rotation they enjoy to play and I’ll continue to advocate Mtn View. As previously posted, you do not get what you do not pay for. There is no driving range/warm up area, the only restroom on the course are in the clubhouse [you will walk past it 3 times], single water fountain on the course. None of this has ever had a negative effect on my play.
What you do get:
Friendly, down to earth staff.
As good a set of greens as you will find anyplace. Domed, small, extreme drainage areas making them a real challenge. Right now, nearly perfect- smooth, quick to roll and will hold a good shot. Have no idea how the greens keeper maintained these with 30* temp in Santa Paula.
Well-watered fairways- although not super maintained with over seed etc, compared to the dormant fairways on other courses, well above average right now. The benefit of the course sitting next to a river, I’m told.
Short, challenging layout- as drivable par 4’s become vogue, Mtn View moves into fashion. The greens/trees protect the many sub-300 yard holes.
Peace and quiet- it’s called Mtn View. You are not close to freeways, byways, treatment plants, etc. I truly escape when on this course. Really a pleasure to walk.
Suggestion-1: implement a front/middle/back flag system for the greens. It’s really fun for a bogey golfer like me to shoot at flags GIR; without any indication where the hole is cut takes some of the fun out of it.
Suggestion-2: let the trees canopy back over the tee box on #18. Certain this runs contrary to the men’s club desires, but I thought the cover made the hole challenging, not impossible.

Played another enjoyable round in Santa Paula early Sunday/12th. The song remains the same for Mtn View- forget the yardage, keep perspective on the fairway grass [not going to be the high end stuff] and enjoy the greens. Hit it straight and score well. Spray it in the trees and you’ll suffer. I hit the ball well enough to walk away feeling good about it, yet with MV’s super low slope, the score indexed above my current rating- which I think I like.
Pity to see deep tire marks in some wet spots in the fairways; some simple signage in those [collection] areas might help. All these types of spots were close to the tee boxes and would not really affect play.
A great alternative course and I’ll probably play it more often this fall as BV continues to fail to maintain itself.

Play here occasionally and always drive away wondering why I do not more. As previously posted, you don’t pay for what you don’t get – and forget the yardage and slope – if you cannot hit the ball straight and/or scramble you will not score on this course. Plus, the greens are good and require course knowledge. First timers will be very surprised….it will be a test of golf for anyone.

In response to a7hardin, not sure if you have the right golf course. Mountain View has a women manager and she has been there 3or 4 years. Course has been in great shape for the last 10 years. Clubhouse is always a work in progress. Thay have also only had one privet owner since it opened in 1968. If you had a run in with an employee you should bring it the attention of the manager @ mvgcsp@yahoo.com. I also know that the are hiring right now.

The Golf Course has had so many different managers its ridiculous. It looks like this new Manager has already done some good work. This guy seems pretty determined to get the course and the club house straightened out. He should probably fire and replace most of the staff if he hopes to succeed.

I am a regular @ this tight, short course. The greens are better than most courses under $75. The management is in the process of increasing the difficulty of the course, stretching holes, improving(?) hazards and adding trees. What you don't get, you don't pay for --- no driving range, no cart girl, limited drinking fountains, no on course pit stops.

IF you want to play down 'n dirty golf, where 'rub-of-the-green' has meaning, then this is your challenge. Plenty to complain about, but if you ain't got game, who's to blame?

And, after you decide I'm right, then step it up and join the Men's Club there and participate in lively skins games every Sunday morning, and come to the meetings 1st Tuesday of each month. There are several low-handicappers who are really nice, get-involved kinda of folks. And many higher-handicappers who give them boat-loads of good-natured ribbing.

Play June 18th early. If you’re a golf snob, maybe don’t bother going to MV. If you’re looking for a course that offers something different than the typical 6000++ yard course, MV delivers. Believe me a] do not let the yardage fool you; b] if you do not hit the ball straight, no matter how far, you will not score on this course.
Trees galore. Miss the fairway, must hit a golf shot to get back into play. Many holes are narrow with OB or well-guarded entries from the other side.
The fairways are not always going to be the classic golf course grass. At times, you might feel as though you are hitting off your front lawn. I accept that as part of the challenge of the course.
Yes, the tee boxes are beat in a lot of areas. However, they are level and you DO get to use a tee. The sand traps are pretty bad, heavy low-end stuff. Again, I look at this as a challenge and you won’t find yourself in these often anyway.
MV pays the most attention to the greens - probably the best-kept secret in VC. And they are tricky. Small, subtle undulations - miss on the wrong side and par will be tough. What appears to be a routine 2-3’ tap in is not – they will move on you if not careful.
I would suggest playing early or late – after 8am it gets crowded and the men’s club has a skins game every Sunday. Check it out – you might be surprised with what you find.

The course played well and the conditions were great.
that day was one of the hottest of the year in the San Fernando Valley @ 103
so it was great to beat the heat in Santa Paula with a cool breeze coming from
the west at about 15-20 mph at times. The track was fun to play and the green fee of $34.00 with cart in prime time and almost wide open my twosome played in 3 ½ hours.

I played in my first Men's Club Tournament here @ Mountain View on Sunday, 6/12, and they do a wonderful job with the event. The staff, with their fine manager, were great. The Men's Club officers are very nice people, making the day a fun one.

The course, sadly, is altering the #2 hole by filling in the 'pumped-water' stream. Otherwise, with the past winter/spring rains, the course came through in fine shape.

More gentlemen should consider joining the Men's Club, it is an opportunity to meet new people that enjoy their golf!

Great course, during the week you can just walk on without a tee time. Weekends are busier but still nothing like other courses in Ventura County. I teed off on Sunday 06/5 at 8:15 and finished in about 4 - 4 ½ hours. The greens are always in great shape, and the trees really make this shorter course very challenging. You can’t bet there prices weekend rates are $38 to ride in the morning but after 4:00 pm (super twilight) on any given day its only $16 to ride and $ 9 to walk. This place is great!

Pace of play is slow on the weekends. Course has cart pathes that cross other tee areas, makes you feel a bit vulnerable in open carts. Hole number 1 is neat in that the tee box is some 75+ above the fairway. This course can easily be improved by mgmt if they wanted to.

The course was worth the fee. It had rained the morning I played so the fairways and the tee boxes were wet and it was hard to get a footing. The greens held well. The course had a par 5 at 550 yards and a par 3 at 218 making it a challange at times. Water came into play on a few holes. There were only red and white tee boxes and a couple of par fours that could be driven. Over all it was worth the drive.

OK..... could argue moving them up a slot or two, but OK lets see next on the list...MOUNTAIN VIEW!....Excellent rating.......Hmmm next on the list Ojai Valley leme see shall I play Ojai or Mountain View............gee who should I pick ARRRRGGGGGG.

Don't get me wrong Mountain View is a fine $15 golf course but EXCELLENT. Somethings wrong.

Played here 8/23 for the first time. Conditions overall were pretty good. Greens were good, fairways were a little brown in spots, traps need more sand and the course needs more signs to direct golfers. The price was more than right at $9 for weekday super twilight and finished my round in 3h15m (played thru 2 twosomes). Was a little disappointed that I was charged full cart fee of $12.50 during S-TW. Usually rate goes down a bit and 12.50 is a bit high for regular times considering that they don't have tops on them. I usually walk anyways but usually use carts for first time visits. Will definitely be back to this course though.

I Played 7/17 This was the first time there it was very confusion to make out the track, no signs or hole markers to show where to go or hit to. They had no starter on duty just the girls that run the snack bar, and they could not care if you are waiting to get on the course. They course was in good shape but they need a lot of help in basic customer service! Beware also you will be playing with wind all day long and the carts have no tops on them so bring an hat. I dont think I will come back to this course, it is over
30 miles from my home but if you are a local you might give it an try.

This course was a mixed bag. Holes 2,7,11, and 17 were tough and interesting. Holes 5, 10, and 13 belonged on an executive. Perhaps the oddest thing besides the fact that half of the pins couldn’t even stand up, was the 12th tee. After leaving the 11th green you literally have to backtrack up 200 yards. It was so ridiculous that we dropped in the fairway instead of making the track. The conditions of the course were mixed too. The greens were awesome but the bunkers had weeds growing in them. I’d probably play the course again. The $25 weekend green is a good deal and the course was challenging despite its shortness.
