Walked Sat. Morning, $65 Sr. rate. Mid 60's with little wind and overcast made for pleasant playing conditions. 4H, 20M POP. Course was in very nice shape. Small greens rolled smooth and were medium fast with few ball marks. Kikuyu fairways and tees were in excellent condition. Rough was 2-3" but nasty, thick kikuyu. How bad was the rough? One of my playing partners was a teaching pro who played a nice, solid, close to par round. His only 2 bad holes of the day were doubles due to shanks on pitch shots out of that stuff. Few sand traps here, but they were immaculate with thick, fluffy sand. Nice restaurant on site. Marginal driving range that is barely adequate to warm up on. Good customer service. Highly recommend this old school, tree lined layout where numerous holes have views of the Pacific. It shocks first timers here how hilly this layout is overlooking the ocean and how much the greens break on side hill putts.

Walked Sunday afternoon with Josh. $47 mid day. 4.5H leisurely POP where we had acceptably minimal waiting most holes behind a 4some in carts. Rcquinn's recent review spot on. Kikuyu from Tee to fringe in good condition with few bare areas anywhere. Rough mowed down almost everywhere, not penal. Greens were smooth, receptive, few ball marks and rolled very nicely. Managed to find one of the few sand traps on the course and the sand was thick, fluffy and well maintained. Staff quick, friendly and efficient. Busy restaurant onsite. Highly recommended.

Played Morro Bay on Tuesday with some friends on a spectacular afternoon. The course is in great condition and the greens were the highlight. The course has views of Morro Bay from at least 12 holes. Although the yardage is short the course is difficult as most fairways are severely sloped and the greens are very difficult as well. Conditions of the tees, fairways and greens were excellent not to mention how reasonable the greens fees are. Enjoy!

Played Morro Bay last Saturday am, and it was everything I had expected. $75 to ride, and conditions were excellent. The course layout is pretty straightforward without too much penalty if you are offline as the grass is continuous over the whole hillside. I’m not a big fan of kikuyu, but fairways were excellent, and the rough was cut short enough that you could get out of it predictably.

270 degree views of the bay and the rock are a treat. However, the lush conditions made for a great breeding ground for mosquitoes! Bring your own repellent cuz the pro shop was sold out!

7/12 we played Morro Bay Golf Course at noon. Just a really fun course, with views of the bay from many holes. Up and down on lot of the holes making yardage play a lot longer than card. We paid $55 at noon with cart, younger players could walk but it is a good walk. Course in good shape if you hit fairways, rough was cut fairly short but grass thins out a lot. Fairways have nice fluffy lies because of the Kikuyu Grass, hit short of most greens and that Kikuyu keeps you short. Sand traps had a mix of sand, firm in fairways but kind of powdery and thick in green sides. Cannot call it a high end course by any means, but high end setting for sure. Must remember fog and cold in the mornings this time of year and not much over 70 in the afternoons.

Morro Bay... aka Poor Man's Pebble

The nickname is true for all the right reasons. Spectacular views, fun layout, and challenging greens.

The greens are all I am here to discuss:

I have ran through this track over 100 times and the greens still cause a fit. Not because of their condition (they run quite smoothly for a crowded muni), but because every putt has break. Again, not like one or two cups from 10', but one or two feet from 10'. An improperly placed approach will likely lead to a three-putt or worse, challenging the finest of short games. Holes 1, 5, 7, 11, 12, 13, and 15 all have potential putts with at least five to ten feet of break... yes you read that correctly. 5-10 FEET of break. Knocking in fewer than 30 putts in a round is a feat in itself.

And when the winter greens roll through, the challenge increases as the GK often lets the stimp hit 10.5+ with 2-4 degrees of slope (some places reach 7-9 degrees).

Good luck lagging the ball on those slippery sliders!

Walked the Blues (6083/69.9/119) in roughly 4H twilight. Sunny, fairly calm and around 70 made for a very pleasant afternoon. $30 to walk with the SLO Co. card is a good rate for this course.

Kikuyu tees mostly level and well maintained with decent coverage.

Kikuyu fairways mostly lush and good to play from.

Mostly Kikuyu rough maintained low with mostly good coverage. Beside and behind the greens the rough is lusher/taller. DO NOT short side yourself here! Many hard pan areas farther off the fairways.

Few sand traps on this course, but those observed were well maintained with good quality sand.

Smallish, old school poa greens were mostly firm but held approach shots very well. Putted medium speed and were relatively smooth even late afternoon. Most slope back to front and fall off to at least one side. No tiers on these greens, but down hillers are to be avoided on these greens.

Customer service excellent, friendly Marshall and Starter. Small driving range and a busy restaurant onsite. Never any on course services here. Fun course, Recommended.

Played Morro on vacation on September 10, 2022. The staff is absolutely exceptional! Starter is hilarious!

Course is really good. Not terribly difficult, but is really fun. Wife came out and rode along with us, though she didn't play much. She did pipe a drive though.

As for course, tee boxes were good but not great. Fair amount of divots on the tee boxes.

Fairways were good. Pretty green and lush. Not many divots. Very green vs. what I am used to.

Very few bunkers on the course. I was in none during the day, but saw others play bunkers and there looked to be sand in them.

Rough was nice. Not long but longer than the fairways.

Greens were decently fast. I fixed quite a few pitch marks but overall very good. Everything breaks to the southwest.

Turkeys were fun to see running around. Lots of biting bugs, so wear bug spray.

All told, the staff made this course. Staff was second to none. Really happy to have played here. I really want to bring my older son out to play here.

Walked the Blacks (6360/71.0/123) in around 5H mid day for the SLO Card rate of $27. Played with 3 nice guys who were the last group of an 11 man Bachelor Party golf outing. They freely admitted they were not golfers. They had the whiff, skull and shank pretty dialed in. POP was just brutal, shockingly we were in position on 18. I knew we were in trouble when all 3 groups of the Bachelor Party were on #10 tee when we made the turn. No shortage of beer and cigars. Clear, consistent 1-3 club wind in the mid 60's made for challenging scoring conditions. Kikuyu tees had good coverage except for a few tees under large trees which were thinner. Decently maintained for divots. Kikuyu fairways winter thin with good coverage. Mostly kikuyu rough mowed down low. Winter thin and some areas are hardpan. The few sand traps on this layout were well maintained with fine, brown dirt/sand. Smallish poa annua greens are at least 10 days from being good again after spring maintenance. They putted medium speed and were bumpy. Mostly firm but still held irons well. Customer service excellent, quick efficient check in, friendly starter. Almost never any on course services here. Busy restaurant onsite. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is adequate. Solid, fun to play layout with no water or many places you will lose a ball. However, the Kikuyu, tall trees, hilly terrain and small, sloping quick greens are a good test. Scoring is tougher here than the scorecard would indicate. Recommended.
