Made another trip out to Colorado again this past week with a few work colleagues to play the always challenging and beautiful Colorado Golf Club. We played 36 holes on day one and another 18 on the second day, so really got a chance to see all the angles on this Rocky Mountain gem.

To this day I would still say it's probably the toughest course that I've ever played, mostly because the greens are so intricate and require the most precise landing areas and trajectory or else your great shot ends up somewhere it shouldn't, even though you may have aimed right in the middle of the green. The greens are so fast and so challenging.

The length is of course also a challenge and simply requires great shot after great shot to get anywhere near good scores. We played from the Paintbrush tees (these are the whites equivalent) and it's still near 7000 yards. Can't even imagine playing the tips here - would likely be my highest-ever score!

Besides the greens of course, the rest of the property is immaculate. Fairways are in perfect summer shape, the rough is thick and challenging, and any shots off line may be lucky to find the light areas of the brush but you might also find your ball pressed right up against a small cactus or in one of the bushes for an unplayable either way. Bunkers are all finely filled with very nice and fluffy sand, but what's interesting at CGC is how many still have the native brush surrounding them making them a double whammy of danger.

Tee boxes were in pretty perfect shape as well but of course some damage on the more popular par 3 tee boxes, but nothing to complain about and there's a good chance it won't be a few days before everything here is back to perfect. A truly unique golf experience every time.

Thankful that I have a chance to play here just about every year and was happy to shoot my best-ever score (although still not a very good one!) on the final day. This course will always put your confidence to the test and let you know exactly where your game is in the present.

Lucky enough this week to get back out on Colorado Golf Club and hard to imagine but it exceeded all expectations despite getting near the end of their season when they shut down for the winter. We caught quite the sweet spot in terms of conditions and even the weather cooperated for 90% of the round. It's hard to describe the grandeur and pristine nature of this course in words and sometimes even pictures don't do it justice, but even driving up to the magnificent clubhouse and seeing the fairways in the distance was an optical treat and an adrenalin rush to the senses. Contrast the gorgeous landscape with lush green fairways winding between it and all manner of deer, eagles, turkeys and elk cruising around - you get the picture. This is golf heaven. Pleasure to play on green carpet fairways and thick, lush rough. Traps, both greenside and in the fairways, filled with the nice fluffy stuff where needed, less where not. Tee boxes perfect. And the greens? Wow. Some of the hardest I've ever putted on, both quick as lightning and sloped and tiered to incredible extremes - but not in the least bit gimmicky. Just tour quality challenge. Amazing. Definitely used our caddy's knowledge throughout. This course presents so many challenges off the tee when selecting clubs, but it's really more about the approach to the greens. They are so absolutely difficult and challenging that you really have to think outside the box when it comes to landing areas, and of course take that crazy speed into account. Course design by Coore-Crenshaw has to be one of their best. And while there are numerous places to lose balls and get frustrated on the course, there are also many native areas off the fairways that still leave you with some life and a shot to get back into the holes. It was certainly a bit chilly for October at this altitude, but we had a gloriously sunny day until around the 15th hole when the clouds and wind picked up and temps dropped around 20 degrees, but luckily that only lasted for a hole or two before the sun came out again. Don't ever pass up a chance to play this gem if you can. It's a once in a lifetime experience.

Played two rounds out at Colorado Golf Club this week and the course is in excellent condition from tee to green and all points in between. The service at this place is absolutely top shelf and they take care of every little detail for you. Once again, this course proved a bridge too far for me to conquer. It's so tricky and fast that even well struck shots can roll off into oblivion - that's how fast the greens are. I hit a number of clean balls that would have been perfect at any LA Muni, but at CGC you have to play the speed of the greens and run up to them perfectly or you'll find yourself posting some big scores. I won't lie - it was frustrating. It's not the course's fault - it's mine. It's just that tough and that does take away some of the fun while playing, but you can't deny this place's rugged beauty and the exceptional golf course architecture and challenge. I did actually better my scores from my last trips here and did shoot far more pars than ever before, but there were always too many blowup holes in between to keep me from posting a respectable score. Maybe next time. Greens were super fast and perfect, probably running around 11.5/12. There is not a terrible amount of undulation on the majority of the greens here, but when you add that speed with any funky breaks, you're in for a long day. Caddies here do a great job of keeping the greens very well manicured after ball marks. The fairways and were as pristine as it gets - can't find a bad lie here. But if you do find the ample trouble away from the fairways and first cut, you'll have your work cut out for you. It's not deep rough off the fairways, but more a liberal fescue that is kind enough to let you find your ball most of the time, but cruel enough to make your work getting back onto the green stuff that much harder. The bunkers are in fine shape - both greenside and fairway. There are a number of very difficult traps with near vertical walls to swallow up your hope of getting up and down. And the tee boxes are an absolute delight. Perfectly level, perfectly manicured, and any number of combinations to suit any style - as long as that style is darn good golfer. This course is no joke. This club is fantastic. Never pass up the chance to test yourself here at least once if you get the chance. You won't ever forget it.

It's taken my best friend in Colorado two and a half years to finally believe I was ready for the challenge of his country club - he was wrong! Colorado Golf Club ate me alive, just as it was intended to do. But it was so worth the pain.

CGC is paradise in God's Country. Sure, there are perfectly manicured courses all over the place at premium prices, but the way CGC blends into the surrounding is so utterly exceptional that you just can't help but be blown away. You spend the day on gorgeous and inviting fairways and tee boxes, sharing company with rabbits, deer, antelope-esque creatures, soaring eagles ... it's amazing.

The course itself is a dream, even if you get somewhat overwhelmed as I did at various points. The thin Colorado air is a tease, pretending you'll be able to reach over 500 yard par 4s in two with no problem. You can, if you're a 5 handicap, but for the rest of us, it's overload, but in the best way possible.

You roll up and down with the hills and the course takes your breath away. Strangely enough, it's incredibly fair. It's not like they just throw a few bunkers or trees in the middle of the fairway to throw you off - CGC doesn't have to. It's long. It's fast. It requires accuracy that will be punished accordingly if neglected. Am I rambling? Just wait until you see the pics I will post later.

Conditions? Perfect. From the clubhouse to the driving range to the first and last tees - exceptional in every way. The greens are incredibly fast, running about an 11.5-12 according to the locals as the course was being readied for a club championship. Fairways lush, tee boxes pristine, sand immaculate.

Look, you're going to lose balls here and when you do, the native areas are fairly forgiving when it comes to finding your ball, but not so much when it comes to the foxtails that will destroy your socks!

Speaking of the native areas, they are abundant, and offer the greatest obstacle to success. There are a number of holes with intimidating carries that can throw you off if there's any hesitation in your confidence. There are water features, but again, they blend in beautifully with the surroundings.

It's heaven, plain and simple. I'm lucky enough that one of my best friends is a member there and, although I stunk up the joint overall, I did have enough pars and bogeys that he knows I can handle it. He told me, 'Come back next year 25% better and you'll love it even more.' Easy to say when you shoot a 76 there like he did!

I know to cherish those types of golf days because at places like CGC, they don't come around all that often. 25%, huh? I'll be back.
