Ok when posting a score through the USGA GHIN app I select the course and tee's and it tells me the actual handicap is a 71. I shoot and 83 so my handicap should post as a 12 right? Well its shows a 10.3 for the round????? Can someone explain why it is like that?

that is the number posted adjusted for slope and rating of the course you played, and is used to determine your index.

Your course handicap is the number used for doling out strokes, based on the course slope and rating. So if you are a 12.1, your handicap at desert willow is 13. At La Purisima from the tips, it's 19. At Encino from the whites, it's 8.

So, following along here: if you shoot 83 at DW, you post a 10.3. If you shot a 83 at LP, you would post around a 7.x... and at Encino, a 83 probably posts a 14.x. This reflects the difficulty of the course... a 83 at LP from the tips would probably feel like a 7 over to you.

Therefore, if you played LP all of the time, your scores would be higher than if you played at Encino all of the time. So this is the attempt to normalize the difference. Theorectically, if you, the LP player, met the Encino player at Desert Willow, the handicaps given should be as if you played DW all of the time.

it's more rating than slope.... though the higher your index, the more slope affects your course handicap...

slope is the concept that the better you are, the less you deviate from your number. The higher the slope, the more strokes a bogey golfer will get compared to a scratch. (for the geometrically inclined, the slope is referring to the steepness of the line, with the x and y axies representing index and rating, the plots represent likely score)

72.0/116
scratch: 0
bogey: 18

72.0/ 122
scratch: 0
bogey: 19

72.0/130
scratch: 0
bogey: 21

75.0/130

scratch: 3
bogey: 24

Thanks to Matt for posting this question, and thanks to Michael for the helpful responses. I too noticed this month's ago, but forgot to put any gray matter to it then. That slippery slope applies to this scrambler, for sure!

reading the OP again... some mistakes in the question.

assuming your current index is 12.1, you say your actual handicap for this course is 71. What you meant to say was, your course handicap is 13.

So, you shoot a +11, 83, for a net 70. So, you shot 11 over, but it's adjusted to 10.3... some formula for rating and slope gives you credit for playing at a harder course.

here's another example of my rounds:
i'm 5.2

2 rounds, 81; both a 9 over par 72

course A:
69.9/127
course handicap 4
posted 9.9

course B:
71.8/130
course handicap 6
posted 8.0

The formula: Your final ESC (83) - Course Rating (71), the difference (12), is multiplied by (113) =1356.

To get your index for the round, Divide 1356, by slope of 132 of the course, which equals 10.3

This is great but just curious where the 113 number comes from?
