I am going to the Bay for the OPen next month, of course we would like to play somewhere in Monterrey but with all the pros and spectators , this will not happen. I have been scoping the scene and essentially have narrowed down my choices of courses to play ( of course money is an issue)

1) Cinnabar Hills ( best course for the buck and has GPS) heard it awesome, can anyone confirm this?

2) Stonetree ( a lil more pricey then Cinnabar and a farther drive from where we are staying) but heard its great

3) Half Moon bay ( tourists trap maybe?) not to impressed by the ocean layout, would likely play the old course, super expensive

4) Harding Park , the reviews Ive read state this track is overrated?

4) Passtiempo awesome but is it really worth the money?

Really leaning towards the first 2 choices for best courses for the buck ( gotta save some fun money u know?) If anyone has any input I'd love to hear it!!!

Thanks

1. Cinnabar Hills..when their greens are nice, they are hands down the best greens in the area. Hard, fast, and tight. Exceptional greens. Overall layout of the golf course is decent, 3 nines, I personally like the Mountain and Lake, the Canyon's a little gimmicky to me. Fantastic golf museum in lobby. Lots of memorbilia from the past.

2. Stonetree...IMHO, an awful, horrid design. Gimmicks on every hole. Johnny Miller fell asleep on this one. I've played 5 of his tracts and this one has got to be his worst. But, that's just me. Besides, it's a long drive from where you are.

3. HMB...if you didn't like the Ocean, you won't like the Links. Links is brutal. Very difficult to score. They have US Open qualifiers there every year and the scores are not low. Meaders thru a bunch of homes, the whole way. I personally love both courses here. Email specials are awesome.

4. Harding Park..muni golf, play it for the history of it, not the condtions. You can see Olympic across the other side of the lake. Gun club close by so you listen to POP, POW! on the back nine. GolfWeek lists Harding in the Top 25 you can play.

5. Pasatiempo..one of the state's crown jewels. A GolfWeek Top 100 golf course overall and #3 in Best in State you can play, behind Pebble and Spy. Most difficult green complex's you'll ever play. Condition is usually very good, once in awhile it can be a little ragged. Yardage says 6500yds. from the tips but it plays 6800yds. Extremely difficult, a true championship layout and lots of history here, with Marion Hollins and Alister MacKenzie.

I'd recommend Pasa, a jewel. Forget the $$, it's a must play. 2ndly, don't forget about Pacific Grove GC in Pacific Grove. A shortie but a fantastic back nine with ocean views that rival Spy and Spanish. The best bang for your buck (45 bucks) in the entire state of California. The Bayonet/BlackHorse courses near Fort Ord are spectacular. Both have been redesigned and both are exceptional. Not too far away is San Juan Oaks, a fantastic Gene Bates design (He did the renovation at Bayonnet/BlackHorse as well) and Fred Couples first forray into course consulting was done here at San Juan Oaks. No homes, layout is good, just a golf course that takes you for a ride in the country. Love it.

Also recommend Wente Vineyards in Livermore. Another GolfWeek Best you can play in Cali. Great layout, routing, and no homes, just a great, enjoyable round of golf with exceptional conditions.

Lastly, I don't know if you're a NCGA member but right now they have a special going on. You can play Cordevalle, another GolfWeek Best in State and Trent Jones Jr. masterpiece, including a night stay and also get to play Pasatiempo another day for 400 bucks. That's 2 exceptional courses, a night's stay at a fantastic semi-private resort, and memories for a lifetime. Can't beat that.

Any other questions just let me know.

I think you'll enjoy your round at HMB. They just had US Open qualifying on that course about 3 weeks ago and no one shot under par. The guys who made it shot 1 over and 2 over.

A lot of homes but the condition is usually top notch. Grass should be lush, green, and the rough is not cut down too much. Greens are usually exceptional, smooth and quick.

17 and 18 are a blast. Have fun!
