Played a morning round on Monday 5/9 as a solo walker. POP 3 hours 55 minutes - course very busy, with nowhere to go, so I just played the pace that conditions allowed.
Compared to a couple weeks ago, the course seems a little ragged. Tee boxes were fine, except a little chewed up on par-3 holes. Fairways showed lots of thin spots, with some discolored areas too. Bare spots were evident on many fairways. I played from 1 fairway bunker, where sand was thin but maintained, and all bunkers appeared to have been given attention by grounds crews. Greens were soft and receptive, meaning there were tons of ballmarks, such that I was repairing 5 or 6 on every green. Some bare spots are starting to show on some greens.
Nice to note that all (or most) of the old broken cups have been replaced. Now they might need to match that with some new flag staffs, such that the flag sits flush at the bottom of the cup.

Played an afternoon round on Monday 5/9 as a solo walker. POP 3 hours 25 minutes. Conditions slightly better than the previous week. Some tee boxes that were sanded last week were a little shaggy, but good teeing ground. Fairways were nice! Although I didn't play from any bunkers, they appeared to have much improved conditions, with well maintained sand and sculpted margins. The greens were very nice - smooth, receptive, rolled true at medium to fast speeds.

Played 2 rounds today as a solo walker, without a reservation.

Check in was courteous and friendly, and I was given the choice of which course to play. Given that the first tee on Butterfield Stage was backed up, and a single had just started out on Chino Creek, I chose Chino Creek. I took my first shot at 10:25am under partly cloudy skies, with little wind and relatively high humidity. Both rounds were played from blue tees (6850 yards/126 slope rating/72.5 course rating). Drink cart service came around several times, but no marshall. I finished my first round in 3 hours 20 minutes, with some waiting for the single ahead, who somehow picked up an additional player somewhere along the first hole. My second round was started at 1:50pm, and I was done in 3 hours 30 minutes, after playing through a brutally slow foursome on the sixth hole. During the second round, the afternoon winds kicked up hard out of the southwest. The course was in generally good condition.

Tee boxes were level, mostly lush and well covered. The par-3 4th and 14th holes had lots of sand to fill in previous tee block positions, but good ground was easy to find. Tee blocks were paired with white tees on 14th & 17th holes, shortening overall yardage by maybe ~100.

Rough was variable, with lush, sometimes penal conditions adjacent to fairways. In areas I consider "non-critical" (between tee boxes and start of fairway), rough was patchy, with tufts of grass mixed with thin and bare spots. The farther away from the fairways, the rough exhibited more bare areas and hardpan. Rough was fluffy around greens, but not difficult to play out of.

My drive on the first hole found the fairway bunker, and that was my one and only trip to the sand today. Sand was maintained, damp and heavy, but not difficult to hit from.

Fairways were in good shape, with good coverage. Balls sat up, allowing for crisp iron shots. Most divots appeared to have been filled with sand, or otherwise repaired.

Greens were in fine shape as well. They were soft and very receptive to all kinds of shots, from low trajectory long irons, to high short irons. Collars around greens were mowed close, allowing for bump and run shots. There were a few very tight pin placements, where the hole was within just a few steps of the edge of the green. Putts rolled true at medium speed, except on a few where I left myself above the hole - those were some tricky putts!

This course is playing well right now. Always a good bargain.

I played a round this morning, then another this afternoon, walking both times. During the first round, I was paired with another single, who quit after the first nine. Two other singles joined me for the final 3 holes of the first round; the second round I played alone. Service in the pro shop was courteous and friendly, and the women in the snack shop gave good service too. There was not any drink cart service on the course today. Combined, both rounds took just about 8 hours to complete.

Tee boxes were generally level and well covered with turf. The par-3 tee boxes were pretty chewed up with divots, but it was always easy enough to find a good spot to tee the ball.

Rough was the usual mixed bag, from lush, thick and penal, to thin, to bare dirt in some places. The deepest and thickest was up to 3 inches. There also seemed to be many areas impacted by burrowing animals.

I had to play from greenside bunkers only twice during the day, and both had well maintained, but thin sand. Some bunkers were observed to have weeds growing within, and margins were mostly overgrown.

Fairways were for the most part in very nice shape, with lush grass covering most areas, such that lies were good with balls sitting up. There were a few areas where coverage was thin, and just a few bare areas were seen. Overall, nice playing conditions in the fairways.

The greens had just been aerated on Wednesday 4/13, and narrow bore holes were evident. However, there wasn't any sand on the greens. Surfaces were smooth, somewhat soft, and held well struck shots. Putts rolled true, though a little slower than I expected. In my opinion, these greens were in better condition than those on Chino Creek, which I played yesterday.

As usual, I recommend this course for its value, playing conditions and walkability. Just don't expect more than the course can deliver.

On Sunday 4/17 I joined two friends for an afternoon round. Before the round, I warmed up with a small bucket on the all grass range, then rolled some putts and chipped on one of three practice greens. I walked ($17 super twilight rate) while they rode. During the round, gusty winds blew, first from the northeast, then later switched to west. We played from the blue tees (6850 yards/126 slope rating/72.5 course rating) and finished in about 4.5 hours.

Overall conditions were decent, though I was a little disappointed with the greens - they just weren't as good as usual.

Tees were mostly level, with good turf coverage. Par-3 tee boxes showed quite a bit of divot damage.

I played from one greenside bunker, which had a very thin layer of maintained sand. The work that grounds crews had done previously to sculpt edges of bunkers has not been maintained, such that grass is again creeping over the sides of bunker margins.

Rough was a mixed bag, from thick, lush and penal, to covered but thin, to bare dirt. Some of the deepest rough was in excess of 3 inches, making it difficult to locate errant shots. Interestingly, much of the greenside rough allowed for bump and run shots - normally at this course, the aprons and collars around the greens stop balls quick, but today there were several shots that hit and released onto the greens.

Fairways were in fine shape, with good turf coverage and little divot damage noticed. Balls played from the fairway sat up nicely.

The greens exhibited variable conditions; some were smooth and firm, others soft and bumpy, and others a little furry and bumpy, and many affected by circular yellow discolorations. A few were covered with tree debris from the winds, notably the 12th and 14th holes. The 18th green was in pretty bad shape, with lots of shoe prints and other depressions that deflected putts off their intended lines.

As usual, recommended, with the caveat that your expectations can't be unreasonably high.

I played today as a solo walker, without a reservation. After a brief warm up chipping and putting on one of the three practice greens, I went to the pro shop, where I was greeted with the usual courtesy, paid my green fee, and was sent on my way to the first tee, alone. As usual, I played from the blue tees (6568 yards/124 slope rating/71.3 course rating); teeing off at high noon, I completed my round in 3 hours 35 minutes. Though I was told the drink cart was making rounds on the course, I never saw it during my round. Weather was partly cloudy, temps topping out ~70 degrees, with minimal wind, and rain showers that began just as I was finishing the final hole.

The course seemed relatively well maintained, with mowing of some rough and some tee boxes occurring as I played. Though I did not have to play from any bunkers, those I saw appeared to be maintained, with decent sand.

Tee boxes were all in quite good condition, even on par 3 holes. Level and lush, with little if any divot damage noted.

Rough was the usual mixed bag. Close to fairways, it was lush, and a couple to 3 inches deep. Farther from the fairways, it varied from lush to thin to bare dirt. I played from all conditions of the rough, but never had any problem advancing my shots.

Fairways were in reasonably good shape, thin in some areas, but generally lush. All shots that I played from the fairways sat up nicely, making it easy to strike balls cleanly. Divot damage was not obvious from any of the areas that I observed.

Greens were mostly in good condition, with the exception of discolored patches on many. Surfaces were generally smooth, with few unrepaired ballmarks. Green textures were on the softer side of firm, such that well struck full shots held, and left impressive ballmarks. Putts rolled true at medium speeds, quicker on some downhill putts. According to this site, aeration will occur within a week.

As always, I recommend this course, with the caveat that you don't have expectations above what the course can deliver. Great value and a decent challenge for the dollars paid.

I played on Monday 3/21 as a solo walker, with the intent of getting in a round before scheduled maintenance? The marshal wasn't aware of the scheduled maintenance.

Course conditions were quite good; green and generally lush - obviously the course has benefitted from recent rains.

Tees were level and lush, with only minimal divot damage on par-3's.

Rough was lush and thick, with just some patchy spots.

Bunkers were mostly hard packed sand and dirt, but maintained.

Fairways were green and generally lush, with only a few patches of bare/thin coverage noted.

Greens were very good. Surfaces were smooth and mostly firm, but held well struck shots. Putts rolled true at medium to fast speed. There were very few ballmarks to repair.

I played as a solo walker on Monday 2/1. Arriving at the courses without a reservation, and finding the parking lot relatively empty, I was given my choice whether to play Butterfield or the Chino Creek Course. I chose the former for its walkability. The starter greeted me nicely, and charged only $10, informing me that on this Monday, I could play as many holes as I liked. With cool temperatures, clouds against the surrounding mountains and hills, and breezy conditions, I began my round at 12:20pm playing from the blue tees (6568 yards/71.3 cr/124 sr). The ground was moist from the previous days rain, and debris from trees and tumbleweeds was still scattered about the course. Maintenance workers were actively pumping water from flooded bunkers.

Tee boxes were level, with patchy turf in winter condition. Some looked to have been overseeded, but those seeds have yet to sprout. Par-3 tees showed some divot damage. It was easy enough to find a good place to tee the ball on every hole.

Fairways were variable, with lush turf in most of the critical landing areas, but also dormant winter thin and bare dirt in a few areas. The rough exhibited similar conditions, except it was a little shaggier/thicker in some spots.

Bunkers were hardpacked, moist sand, and several still had wet muddy bottoms where rain had puddled from the previous day. Each of the four bunkers that I played from required a "pick it" type of shot, rather than a blast. Nice to see that the bunker margins have been sculpted such that the margin is well defined - good work by the grounds crew.

Greens were in pretty good shape, except for the usual plethora of unrepaired ball marks. Other than those ballmarks, surfaces were smooth and firmer than expected considering the rainfall from the previous day. Well struck shots held - I hit a hybrid from over 200 yards on the eighteenth hole that stopped within 3 feet of where it landed, with a deep crater. Putts rolled on their intended lines at medium speed.

I was able to get around the course in 3 hours 30 minutes. A group of two in carts played through on hole 9 as I searched for a lost ball (returned to the tee to play my third shot), and I had to wait on a group of three in carts on holes 10 - 12. The single playing behind me in a cart was on my heels but didn't press. The views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains were impressive.

A fun day on a value course.

Played Tuesday 12/8, teeing off just after noon as a single walker - played alone from the blue tees (6568 yards/124 slope rating/71.3 course rating). Pro shop attendants were great, gave me a "junior" rate of $10. Awesome early December weather, with temps a little above 80, and no wind. Course was busy, but everything ran smooth. Saw drink cart service once, and marshal was around. Great POP, finishing 5 minutes shy of 3 hours.

Tee boxes were level, with good coverage, and only minor divot damage noted on par 3 tees.

Fairways and rough were in winter conditions, with the rough mowed to about the same height as fairways; rough was longer and deeper around the greens. Conditons were variable, ranging from good green lush grass in middle of fairways, to thin dormant grass, with the occasional bare spot. An abundance of fresh, unrepaired divots was evident.

Bunkers showed a marked improvement in appearance and in quality of sand. I only had to play from one bunker, but those that I passed appeared in good condition. The sand that I played from was clean, maintained, and fluffy enough that I was able to play a full blast shot from a greenside bunker. Bunker margins have been shaved for definition - kudos to grounds crew.

The greens were a bit furry, bumpy and covered with unrepaired ball marks. Some were firm, others on the softer side of firm, but held well hit shots. They rolled much slower than usual, even on downhill putts.

I found a sand wedge on the left side of the 18th green, and gave it to the marshal. He tried to find the owner, but couldn't, so turned in the club to the pro shop. I hope the owner can be reunited with his sand wedge.

Another fun day on this value course - always a great place to walk and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains.

After posting this and seeing the rating number, I feel obliged to say that, in my opinion, I rated the course a little higher than it deserved. Maybe it was the less penal rough, or maybe the fairways were worse than I rated? Anyway, take it with a grain of salt.

I played with a friend on Saturday 11/28. My friend secured our reservation through GN for $18 per player, plus booking fees, for the walking rate. We were paired with a twosome of nice young men who rode a cart, teeing off about 6 minutes ahead of our reserved 11:06 tee time. Check in was efficient and quite friendly, as the pro shop attendant sincerely thanked us for choosing to play there and wished us all the best of days.

Playing from the blue tees (6568 yards/71.3 course rating/124 slope rating), under scattered clouds and an unusual ENE wind direction with temperatures in the high 50's, we finished in 4 hours and 30 minutes. The course was busy, but we never felt rushed, with open holes ahead of us. We allowed a faster group to play through on the 10th hole. Drink cart service came around a few times on front nine, and once again on the back.

Course conditions were a little rough, but still acceptable considering the drought and recent cool weather. Given the time of day and the fact that it was a busy holiday weekend certainly impact the course condition, especially the greens and par-3 tee boxes.

Tee boxes were generally level and well covered, with a few exceptions. Each of the four par-3 tee boxes had unfixed divots and some minor uneven ground, but a good tee position could always be found.

Fairways were generally good in the central parts, with mostly good coverage, though thin in spots, with plenty of roll out on all but the highest hit shots. Turf color varied from green to brown. Tight lies for the most part. Out of the prime playing areas, there was some bare dirt. On the 7th fairway, just inside 100 yards from the green, there was a soaked and muddy area that should have been marked GUR, but wasn't. There were many divots left unrepaired - I had to play from a couple of those spots.

Rough had been mowed down and seemed dormant, so played much less penal than earlier in the year when it had been deep and lush. In some spots coverage was good, other spots had bare dirt. Leaves fallen from deciduous trees made locating wayward shots difficult in those areas.

Bunkers showed improvement from recent rounds - rims have been better defined, sand a little deeper, though not hardpan, still not as good as it could be. I played from greenside bunkers twice, and from a fairway bunker once, and each allowed for "normal" shallow blast shots.

Greens were in acceptable condition considering the holiday weekend. Most appeared to look good, with a few minor exceptions. There seemed to be a few random spots of dead grass or fungus on some of the greens, and far too many ball marks left without repair. There were lots of footprints late in the day. However, the greens accepted well hit approaches, rolled mostly true at medium to fast speeds. There are a few holes on this course where a putt from above the hole is very difficult to stop close to the cup, such as holes #5, #8, #10 and #18. Collars and aprons seemed a little drier and thinner than usual, allowing for some different types of shots around the greens.

As always, this course offers a nice walk (or ride), a moderate level of challenge, and a great value for your money.

Monday 10/26 was the final day of the $20 all you can play promotion, so I took advantage one last time. Check in was easy and efficient, and I was given the choice of which course to play. I got my cart, and without any warm up, I was taken by the starter to join a group of three already on the first tee.

Playing from the blue tees (6850 yards/126 slope rating/72.5 course rating), my first shot was hit at 9:35AM on a warm and windless morning. We were behind a group of five, and POP was slow at almost 4 hours 45 minutes. There wasn't any drink cart service on this day.

Overall, course conditions were good.

Tee boxes were generally level, with lush turf coverage and no divot damage noted. The par-3 16th hole is playing from a side tee due to a large eucalyptus tree that fell on the usual back tee location; that side tee is on the shaggy side, but gives an interesting angle to the green.

I played from one bunker (greenside), and it had improved dirt/sand mixture that allowed for a good blast shot. Evident that course maintenance has been working on the bunkers, as the edges had been trimmed and the sand/dirt mixture raked. Too bad the players using that bunker before me failed to use the rakes that they had even taken into the bunker (rake print easy to see next to where shots were played?!?!?!). All bunkers that I saw around the course appeared to be in improved condition over previous weeks.

The rough was the usual mixed bag, varying from bare dirt and low-growing weeds, to nice fluffy, to deep and penal. Balls that sat down in the deep stuff were hard to locate, and hard to extricate. In areas where the cottonwood trees are dropping their leaves, balls can be especially difficult to locate.

Fairways were also a mixed bag, but generally quite good in the main landing areas. In some areas closer to the tee boxes, bare to thin coverage existed, but in the main landing areas the turf was green and lush, allowing the ball to sit up. However, there were lots of divots that weren't filled - my very nice tee shot on the 11th hole stopped right in the middle of an unrepaired divot, making for a difficult approach shot.

The greens overall were good, with some exceptions. On the third green, near the back left, three small patches of brown (dead?) grass were noted. On the thirteenth green, there was a strip across the middle of the green "burned" by an oil leak(?) from equipment. Otherwise, greens were smooth, on the softer side, and held well hit shots. Putts rolled true at medium speeds. There were plenty of ball marks to fix - one member of my group attempted to fix his by "heeling" his putter into them (not effective - I used my tool to fix his for him).

As always, this course is worthy of consideration for its value, conditioning and playability.

I played 2 full rounds of 18 at this course on Monday 10/19. I rode a cart, as a single, and finished the 36 holes in under 8 hours - first round went nearly 5 hours, while second round was completed in 3 hours. Weather was pleasant, with mostly cloudy skies and modest breezes. As usual, course staff were friendly and efficient. Drink cart service was around multiple times, even as late as 4:00PM. Both rounds, I played from the blue tees (6568 yards/124 slope rating/71.3 course rating).

Tee boxes were mostly level, however almost every tee position was very worn. Strange that the par-4 and par-5 holes were just as worn as the par-3 holes. However, the worn areas were not so much from divots as with the grass being clipped low, but not from a mower cut pattern - almost like players had taken lots of swipes with irons without digging into the turf.

Fairways ranged from excellent, lush turf on which the ball would sit up perfectly, to some thin spots with still acceptable turf, to completely bare dirt. Since I was fortunate not to find any of these bare dirt areas, my playing experience wasn't affected.

Rough mirrored the condition of the fairways, except that where it was lush it was thick and penal. Balls that found the thick rough were sometimes difficult to locate, as they would nestle down. Some of the deepest and most penal rough was around the greens and the bunkers. In other areas, mostly off the fairways, rough was thinner and less penal. Bare dirt existed in some areas as well.

Bunkers were in generally poor condition. Those that I played from were hard pan, with at best a very thin layer of sand (quarter inch?), and many had grass encroaching beyond their rims. However, it should be noted that maintenance was actively working on trimming grass from the rims of several bunkers. Golfers would hope that the condition of sand in the bunkers could be improved.

As usual, the best part of the course was the greens. They generally looked good, and felt firm underfoot. Well hit shots were well received - I had a wedge shot plug, and several shots that cratered the green and stopped within inches of impact. There were many unrepaired ball marks. The greens for the most part rolled well, at medium speed. There were a few putts that bumped and turned a bit from the lines read, but overall they were pretty true.

It seems much busier with the unlimited play promotion each Monday. I am curious to see how/if this changes in a few weeks. For a value course, this is always worthy of consideration.
