Played here Wednesday 7/21 for the first time. Didn't expect much being a muni but were surprised first by the rental cart price..$24 per cart. The reason became obvious when we actually picked it up. They have what are probably the nicest carts we have ever used. No GPS but brand new deluxe in super condition.

The course has no "gift" holes since the par 3s are all long. There was only a single 90 degree dogleg right which required a good tee shot to pass the trees for a clear second shot. Yardage from the whites was about 6400 yards. Not too tough to get on in regulation on the par 5s and the greens putted very true although a little slower than expected downhill. Bunkers were a little rough with some being a little "crusty" while others had some pebbles as well as sand.

Weather finally cooperated and it was much cooler than expected. Not a bad layout and we both agreed that we would play it again.

Played this morning 6/22. Greens while fast, were like putting on small corduroy with parallel lines that slightly affected the roll. They still rolled fast so distance on lag putts was a deciding factor for a great score. It's always is a challenge on this course with the huge aprons around most of the greens.

Familiarity is beginning to make a difference for me so don't expect to score well until you have played this layout a few times. Their senior cards help to ease the financial burdon for those of us who are "experienced". Well worth the investment if you expect to play more than a couple of rounds here.

We couldn't have picked a better time to play 3/18/10 with perfect coastal weather and set up for the LPGA Kia Classic the following week. Greens were perfect with no ball marks and rough while not really long, was easy to make good ball contact. There were many LPGA players taking practice rounds when we were there so the conditions overall were ideal.

Lots of bunkers surround these greens with perfectly sloped firm sand ensuring a consistent feel. Tee boxes were about as good as some greens we've played.

The course was offering a replay rate of $39 each so we took advantage and played another 18 holes after lunch. This is a first class facility and if you want to spend a really enjoyable day, it's worth the drive. Not inexpensive but one of those "Must Play" courses.

Played yesterday 7/9. They had just aerated the fairways with plugs remaining but the greens were still very nice. This is a short course but don't be fooled by the score card. Since it's a muni, fees are reasonable although there was an increase as of July 1. This is a shotmaker's course. If you are used to flat "Grip and Rip" courses, you may spend a lot of time where you don't want to be. The driver is not always the "go-to" off the tee. Placement is everything.

Since it's a little off the beaten path, it doesn't get a lot of play but there is plenty of challenge to keep you coming back. Pace of play can be VERY good and I once played the back 9 in 1:25 (and that was with a walking partner).

Worth taking a little time to find it and don't expect to score really well the first time.. There IS a definite learning curve.

Have fun!

We played Friday 1/30 at 10:30am in absolutely perfect weather. The course did have a frost delay till 8:30 but wasn't too crowded and we very rarely had to wait to play a shot. Mid-day temps were in the upper 70's so perfect for shorts in January!

The course was in very good condition with the greens fast and firm and the tee boxes mostly level. They are doing some repair on some tees but they kept the work off to the side and the workers were very accommodating. This track plays well without the severe length and winds of nearby La Purisma.

We sampled a tuna and cheese sandwich at mid-course and found the cheese to be much better than the usual processed types. Very good and made to order..a welcome change from the usual pre-made and wrapped fare of many courses.

This course is always well kept and makes a visit to Solvang an opportunity to play just down the road. Highly recommended and worth the trip. You'll like it.

Played today 1/15/09 and found the course was in great shape. May have been the new management that improved the overall feel of what was always a fun layout.

Greens ran true and were in great shape as were the bunkers and the overall look would never have you thinking that this was the middle of winter.

12:45 was plenty of time to get in a full round. There are elevation changes with very tall directional flags since some of the greens can't be seen from the fairway below or above, There are no GPS on the carts but our Skycaddie really proved its usefulness here. Very helpful in determining distances to blind targets.

We like the course and it's well worth the drive. You would never realize that it's just a few yards off the 101 freeway. Play it and have fun!

Played a very enjoyable round on 1/13. Fairways are cut short but they were hand watering the greens as we played due to the dry conditions of the Santa Ana winds.

While dye has been added to the greens, we found them to be smooth and fast with subtle breaks to test your skills with the flat stick. This course can put a premium on club selection with the afternoon breezes.

Elevation changes add another challenge and the perceived threat of water in play can be a little intimidating although in most cases it's not as close as it appears. We played the course often before the completion of the additional 9 holes.

Definitely worth the extra few $$ to play this side over the original Vinyard layout.

Try one of the newest in Ventura County and you'll be pleased.

Since the weather finally cleared up we decided to play a quick 9 holes on Sunday afternoon. One of the nice things about this course is that it's rarely difficult to get a tee time.

Greens were in surprisingly good condition with subtle breaks and nice coverage.. Speed was good without being ultra fast.

There are some fun holes in this layout with the 90 degree left downhill dogleg on #7 always providing a challenge. Easy to walk and great for a tune-up, the course is well worth the very reasonable green fee.

Occasionally they have evening glowball tournaments that can be a fun way to spend a summer evening. With luck, they will schedule them again this year. We had a great time at the last one of these we played. Bring a good flashlight!

Played Thursday 12/18 and had a PERFECT day. Expected to find everything wet and blustery but the day was far from it! Only the VERY few wet spots on some of the cart paths told us that it had rained for the previous 2 days. Fairways were short with carts allowed and very green with no standing water. Kudos to the drainage gods for a job well done!

Greens were huge, fast, and firm. Staying below the hole made things a LOT easier but distance control was tough and what should have been easy putts ran well past the hole. Lots of subtle breaks added to the challenge.

There is a big difference in playing this course from the black or blue tees or from either of the forward sets. The carries required on some tee shots can add time searching for short shots. There are some environmentally sensitive areas but these are generally not too intrusive.

Privacy is a key here as there are no houses or freeway noises.. You feel like you are playing in a far off links venue instead of just a few minutes from the San Fernando Valley.

If you have the '08 Red Dot book, download the special coupon from their website and save 40% off your green fee. It's a great value at the normal price and the extra savings make it even better!

Give it a try and you will return.

Played this course on 10/1. As usual for this course it was in great shape and we took advantage of the special replay rate and played another 9 holes after lunch.

Bunkers are sand rather than the dirt that is usual for a lot of SoCal courses these days.

Since it was during the week there was very light play and we could play at our own pace without waiting or being pushed by following groups. There are some overhanging trees that we all managed to find from the tee boxes so those presented a little extra challenge.

Love this layout and it's great that the course has finally completed the renovation of the lodge. Cart girls were a little scarce in 90+ degree heat but there were water coolers on the course so we were able to deal with it.

Greens were true with good speed.. Putts actually tracked a little straighter than we would have figured without any ball marks to interfere or elephants buried under the surface.

If you get a chance, I highly recommend the trip to Ojai.

We had a chance to play this course on the 3rd day that the new Victoria Lakes 18 at RiverRidge was open for play. What we found was a VERY pleasant surprise.

There is a reason that a new practice putting green was installed near the Number 1 teebox, This new layout features bent grass greens that are quick and true and nothing like the greens on the original 18. Be sure to use the correct practice green before playing the new layout.

The original Victoria Lakes holes 2 (with a new higher tee box) through 9 are retained as the new 4 through 11. Some of the original River Ridge holes that have been unused for some time are back again with some GREAT new holes added for a fun mix. A new elevated tee box gives a different view of the par 3 that used to be an uphill shot.

If you get a chance, play this fun layout with its very reasonable price. There are, as the name implies, LAKES on this one and risk/reward decisions so keep it in the short grass and you'll be fine.

We have played this course every week in a twilight league for the past 5 months.

During that time they have been working on the back 9 and just this week opened the new holes 17 (Par 3 with a newly constructed green) and 18 (Par 4 with a new tee box and diagonal fairway leading to the same green as before).

This does make the finish a little different than the old #18 and I did have the honor this week of a birdie-birdie finish playing them for the first time.

This course gets a lot of play and can be trouble with the proliferation of tree roots but keeping it in the short stuff always helps. Not a huge challenge but great practice for the approach shots and close to the 101 freeway.
