I walked the blue tees at Hansen on Monday, 6/7/21, with an 11:30am tee time. The first few holes were played in a chilly light rain. It remained cool and cloudy for the remainder of our round. I like the layout at Hansen better than any of the other LA City courses in the SFV. Usually, the conditions here are also better than the other courses. But I'm afraid the drought, lack of watering and proper maintenance, have reduced the quality of this course.

The tee boxes are very chewed up, with many bare spots and difficult to get your tee in the ground on numerous holes. The fairways are about average for the typical LA city municipal course. There are substantial areas of decent green grass, along with bare and thin areas. There was very little run out on most drives. The rough is either much like the fairways or it is somewhat long and thick. I had a few lies just off the fairway that were difficult to advance.

The two sand traps I was in had decent and adequate sand. The greens were quite slow and somewhat bumpy on many holes. Some were smoother and less bumpy. I found it difficult to hit it hard enough to get to the hole. The same is true for chip shots. The greens are a weakness of this course right now.

What a difference a few months makes. After reading the review from this past February, I was looking forward to great conditions at this course. BIG DISSAPOINTMENT! Yes, it was considerably warmer than in February - in the mid 90's. But the real heat in the Phoenix area hasn't really started yet. My best word to describe the course conditions right now is ROUGH. The fairways are mostly quite thin, with many burnt out areas that have been recently punched. There are numerous areas where grass patches have replaced regular turf, and these are dead. I had many lies in the fairway that were on dead, punched, chewed up grass. The areas around the greens were very thin and dried out, or wet. Either way, getting a wedge under the ball was VERY difficult.

The greens look bad, from an aesthetics point of view. They rolled somewhat smooth, but were also a little bumpy. My main complaint is with the inconsistent speeds from green to green. It made putting a real challenge. Although the layout is decent, it was just no fun playing this burnt out, dry course. We paid $60 for each round, and it was not worth that much too me. I do not recommend playing this course right now.

Had a thoroughly delightful round at Moorpark CC on Monday, May 17. We played the Canyon Crest/Creekside nines. Overall, the course is in excellent shape, with one exception: the bunkers. Although I was not in a bunker today, all of them were VERY firm (bordering on hard) and mostly dirt. You could get out of them with a very good shot, but it was challenging.

The rest of the course; tee boxes, fairways, and greens are in very nice condition. The fairways are not as green as I've seen them at Moorpark, but they provide excellent lies and decent roll out. I don't recall any bare areas on the course. The greens rolled medium/fast. They were smooth and more on the firm side. But they held well struck approach shots nicely. I highly recommend the course right now.

Walked the silver tees on Monday, 5/10/21 in 4 hours and 20 minutes. Simi Hills GC overall is thoroughly enjoyable and in great shape. The fairways are semi-lush to lush. Although there are a few thin and brown spots, if you are in the fairway you'll have a very nice lie. There is a good cushion under your ball. It made ball striking easy. The rough is a bit mixed. Some areas are lush and 1-2 inches. Other areas are thinner; easy to hit out of. I was in two greenside bunkers. They had very adequate firm sand; easy to hit from. The greens are in very good condition. They are running medium-fast and smooth. The greens are firm. I hit several approach shots that came in very high, yet did not leave much of a ball mark. The course is a blast to play right now. It should get even better over the next month, as it prepares to course for the upcoming city tournament. Go play this gem.

Walked the blue tees this morning (5/6/21) with a 7:10am tee time. Overall, Balboa is in just fair condition. A number of tee boxes were unlevel and had a lot bare areas. Some were fine. The fairways are not in good shape. They have a mix of grasses, and many bare areas and coverage is typically thin and hard. They were playable, but looked and played like the middle of winter conditions.

The rough is mostly thin with some areas of thicker grass. Usually not a difficult shot from the rough. I was in one greenside bunker and one fairway bunker. Both had adequate heavy darker sand; good to hit from. The greens were punched a number of weeks ago. They were medium speed and held shots OK. But they were still a bit bumpy and our balls wobbled at times. In its current condition, I don't recommend playing Balboa. Encino and Woodley are in considerably better shape.

Had a great time with another single and a nice twosome at Soule Park mid-morning on Monday, 4/26/21. There was a little wind in the afternoon, but it wasn't too bad. We got around the course in just over 4 hours. So, a nice pace of play. There are few courses that I like playing as much as Soule Park. It has a great variety of holes, and is nearly always in great shape.

Overall, SP is in very good condition. The only negative is found with some of the tee boxes. Some were a little unlevel, hard and chewed up. But for the most part, they were quite serviceable. The fairways are starting to green up. There are still a mix of grasses, but well-cushioned lies abound in the fairways. They are not extremely lush, but they are not thin either. They should be perfect in another month. But they are great to play right now.

The rough is not much different than the fairway grass, except in a few areas, where it is 1 - 2 inches in length and not too penal. I was in 1 fairway bunker and 1 greenside bunker. The fairway bunker was nice firm sand. Easy to hit from. The greenside bunker was deep, soft sand. You need to careful not to dig too deep or the ball will stay in the bunker. The greens are in very good shape. They were firm. So lower approach shots would run out. But nicely struck higher approach shots would hold pretty well. They were smooth and ran medium-fast. The greens on this course have a lot of undulation. So being on the proper side of the hole and the right speed are keys to scoring well.

Get out and play Soule Park. The green fees are very reasonable and you will enjoy yourself!

Teed off at 7:40am on Thursday (4/22) as a foursome. We teed off right on time. The round took exactly 4 hours to complete. Overall, Hansen Dam is in fair to average condition for a municipal golf course. After having some very warm days and being late April, I was expecting the course to be a little greener and somewhat better fairway turf conditions. Although the fairways are quite playable, they are not very green, thin in a lot of areas and blotchy looking. The tee boxes were a mixed bag. Some were OK. Some were overgrown, and some were nearly all dirt and unlevel. But, for the most part, it was OK.

I was in 1 greenside bunker. It had adequate firm brown sand. Not difficult to hit from. The greens looked terrible. They were off-colored with a mix of grasses. BUT they rolled very well. They were medium speed. They were pretty firm, and did not hold approach shots too well. For the $19 senior walking rate, I enjoyed the morning round.

I was partnered with a single with a 9:40am tee time at Moorpark Monday 4/12/21. The course was not crowded at all. We breezed through 18 holes in 3 hours 15 minutes. Never saw a golfer in front of us. The course is in Excellent condition. The fairways are green, lush and still provide decent roll out. Tee boxes were a little shaggy on some holes, but never a problem. The rough just off the fairways is not deep (1 inch or so) and not penal. If you are in the hillsides surrounding the fairways you are in very deep stuff.

I was in 1 bunker and it had good firm sand: easy to hit from. The greens were smooth, very receptive, and medium speed. Right now, Moorpark is a delight to play. I highly recommend it.

Our foursome teed off at Simi Hills on Monday, 3/29 late morning. It was a pleasantly warm day with nice breezes. POP was right at 4 hours. We never waited on a shot. I thoroughly enjoy the layout of this course. It has a lot of variety and fun holes. The course is just now coming out of full winter condition. Clearly, the conditions are not what they usually are at SH. However, it is very playable and enjoyable. We knew the greens were punched just 6 days earlier, so our expectations there were low. The greens were still somewhat sandy and bumpy, and breaks on the greens were a bit unpredictable. But we worked through it.

The fairways, though a patchwork of grasses and colors, were fine. They weren't lush by any means, but every time I was in the fairway I had a good lie. There was a nice amount of roll out on the fairways. No problems there. The rough is a mixed bag of short grass, wood chips and other sparse vegetation. The areas surrounding the greens were mostly thin and firm, with the occasional areas of clumpy grass. This made chipping from these places iffy, depending on your lie. Teeboxes were fine. If you're looking for smooth and semi fast greens, I would wait another 2 weeks before playing here. But it is still a fun track to play. I do recommend it.

Had a late morning tee time at Los Robles on Monday, March 22. Nice weather in the 60's with occasional light winds. The putting green and range are open. The short game area is closed. There are rakes in the bunkers - YAY! This is a good course for walking - so I did!

The course is starting to get into nice spring condition. The fairways are green and very aesthetically pleasing. They are still on the thin side with very good roll out. But there is a good cushion under your ball in the fairway. The rough is generally non-existent. Off the fairway you are either in one of the ubiquitous wood chip areas or on dirt. Teeboxes were in good shape and fairly lush, except for a few of the par 3 holes. I was in a few greenside bunkers. All of them had very nice sand. The greens were running smoothly and were medium-fast. The greens on this course are quite the challenge. There are many undulations with serious breaks. We all remarked how every putt we encountered had a substantial amount of break. There were no easy putts out there.

Although this is a shorter course, the greens will test you, and make scoring more difficult than it appears. Overall, the course is in nice shape. I look forward to playing here again - if I can get a tee time!!! HaHa

Paired up with another single and a nice married couple at Olivas on Thursday, 3/11. They just punched and sanded the greens, so they were bumpy and sandy, but were more playable than I expected. Olivas charged twilight rates for the round. Overall, the course is in fair shape. The fairways are quite dormant and firm. There were several different kinds of grasses sparsely mixed in the fairways. But, there was a decent pad under your ball generally. I know this is winter time for the course, but the fairways and green surrounds were in the poorest shape I have seen (even in previous winters) here. I'm sure they will be very nice come spring and summer. The rough adjacent to the fairways is mostly low cut with sporadic thicker grasses and bare spots. I was in two greenside bunkers. Both had adequate dark brown sand; good to hit from. The areas around the greens were quite thin and firm. Overall, the course is playable. But only in average muni shape right now. After the greens heal and spring is in full bloom, the course should be in much better shape than now.

Perfect weather in the low 60's with sun and clouds made for an enjoyable round for my group at Knollwood on Monday, 3/8/21. Overall, Knollwood is in decent shape for winter conditions. I really like the layout here. Many different types of shots are required, and a nice variety of terrain.

Tee boxes are OK. Some were chewed up and hard, but mostly it was not an issue. Fairways are winter thin with plenty of roll. Being in the fairway does not guarantee a good lie. There were bare spots and hardpan, along with some decent lies to be had. The rough along the fairways was about 1 - 3 inches. Sometimes you had a difficult lie with your ball settled down and sometimes it wasn't too bad. The areas surrounding the greens were very firm and thin. You had to be careful with your pitch/chip shots not to blade them. I was in two greenside bunkers. They had adequate firmly packed sand. No trouble to get out of. For the most part, the greens were good. They were medium fast and generally smooth. although we did experience several putts that were bounced off line by bumps in the greens. I enjoyed the round today. But the condition is only fair right now, which is typical for many courses at this time of year.
