Played this course last year when visiting Albuquerque and must say it is a treasure. This is one of those rare courses where I want to visit the city again just to play the course! There are 27 holes (3 different 9's) . . we played 10-27. Lots of elevation changes, great fairways and greens. It's worth another trip to NM just to play this course . . and I don't think a trip to Albuquerque would be complete without playing this course. Excellent.

Played this course 8/7/2010 on a recent trip to the Denver area. It is easily my favorite of the 4 courses I played on the trip. This course is based in the foothills and has a lot of elevation changes. I like elevation changes. There were numerous elevated tee boxes, elevated greens, and sunken greens throughout the course. From tee to green everything was in great condition. The greens were a little bit funky. In addition to being very fast, there was a lot of undulation, I'm not sure I had a flat putt all day long . . but they were also very "thin". That's the only word I can come up with to describe them. They were not "lush" like most greens, but appeared to be a very light growth on top of hardened clay. They putted true . . very fast . . but true! The bunkers had the best sand I have seen in years! Comparable to Spyglass and Edgewood bunker sand . .it was fluffy and fantastic to hit out of. There were several driveable par 4's, but there was always a risk involved so that made them a lot of fun. The pace moved along very well, the carts were equipped with GPS which helped since none of our 4-some had played the course before. The staff was very helpful from the clubhouse to the ranger to the cartgirl. I will definately play this course again when I next travel to the Denver area. It was a fun, challenging, (did I say fun) round.

Played this course 8/6/2010 on a recent trip to the Denver area. This course was not on my original list of courses I wanted to play, but it was located about 1/2 mile from my hotel so I stopped in and talked with Steven, one of the assistant pro's at the course. He was fantastic in providing me with insights on courses in the area, so I put it on my list. Played with a 3-some who play the course regularly, so that helped a lot. The course has a nice mix of long and short par 4's, carries over water, doglegs, and approach shots through narrow spaces. The conditions were very good from teebox to green with the exception of some of the bunkers. There were a couple of bunkers that were rock hard and didn't appear to have been raked out in quite a while. I found the back 9 to be more interesting than the front because of some elevation changes, and some doglegs through pretty heavily forested areas. The customer service was excellent, bordering on exceptional. In addition to Steven in the clubhouse, the rangers were very pleasant and the cart girl was around regularly. They do need to add some water stations to the back 9 even though the cart girl was very good. It was a little pricey for a non-resident.

Played this course 8/5/2010 on a trip to the Denver area. I wanted to play this course because it was the course that my mother and father in law played regularly when they lived in the Denver area. I was not disappointed. This is a beautiful course. It was very well manicured . . both the playing and non-playing areas. It originally struck me as being very "crowded and jammed together" because in addition to the Gold 18, there is a Blue 9 and an executive course all on the same property . . but it didn't play that way at all. There are a number of blind shots . . I can only recall a couple of par 4's where you could actually see the hole from the teebox. A lot of doglegs and subtle bends to this course keep you guessing. I was paired up with a 3-some, a couple of whom had some experience on the course, so that helped a lot. There are a number of par 3's over water, and several fairway carries over and around water. The conditions were very good, the grass was green and lush, the greens were a little slow, but rolled very true and the rough was even well manicured. The bunkers could use a little softening up in a couple of locations but overall, were very playable. The check-in process was a little confusing . . I paid and they handed me my receipt and said "we'll call you when your group is up" . . I had to ask where to go pick up a cart . . then when we headed to the 1st tee had to give up the cart to ride with another member of the 3-some . . that didn't make a lot of sense to me. I'd play this course again when traveling to the Denver area . . . it was a little pricey for a non-resident, but it was a fun round.

Played this course 8/4/2010 on a trip to the Denver area. Was paired with a young golfer on the Broomfield HS golf team (Shawn) who plays the course regularly and was able to provide some local insights. We started on the back 9 which is a pretty interesting trek. It wanders through a housing development, but the houses never come into play. There is a nice use of water through the fairways and a couple of carries over water. The greens were a little slow, but rolled very true. The bunkers could use some work. There were a couple that were like hitting off of concrete. 18 is a hole that will stand on it's own anywhere. A short par 4 with a severe dogleg left. The drive is over water and the approach is over water through a very narrow opening. Very nice golf hole! . . the front 9 is pretty pedestrian. A lot of back and forth fairways and some short par 5's. No real risk/reward opportunities which limit the excitement factor. The pace of play is great. We were behind a 4-some of regulars and they really moved out! Everyone was very friendly and helpful and the ranger and cart girl came around regularly. Worth the price for a nice quick round.

Played in a 4-some today (7/24/2010). Like the layout (nothing has changed there) but the conditions were the worst I've ever played at this course. The fairways were bare dirt in many areas. It was better to drive into the rough than in the middle of the fairway because at least then you had a "lie" to hit your 2nd shot. The greens were slow and bumpy. Was interesting to watch your putt dance its way to the hole if you more than 2-3 feet away. Pace of play today was awful. Had a 4-some of mid 20's guys ahead of us . . playing from the blues . . and if any one of them hit a fairway all day long I'd be majorly surprised. So they'd hit . . go look for 4 balls . . hit a tree . . go look for that one . . Aaauuuggghhhh!!!! No ranger at all. The cart girl was by quite regularly but then again, it's 100+ degrees in Tucson now. I hit the ball well, and scored reasonably well . . but it wasn't nearly as much fun as it normally is due to the very poor course conditions and the pace of play.

Played this course twice this weekend (7/17-18/2010) and it continues to amaze me that I love this course so much. The course was shut down for a while last winter and I expected conditions to be terrible. Even when the course was operating daily the conditions are never going to be confused with a resort course. But I was surprised at how good the fairways and greens actually were. Yes, there are some bare spots on the fairways and greens. I have come to expect that at this course, but they were not nearly as prevelant as I expected them to be. I am of the firm belief that this is the best layout I've played in Arizona. Every hole presents different options on how to play it. Every shot presents different options on how it should be played. Tom Doak did a magnificent job in designing this course and having it fit in with the surrounding mountains and desert landscape. It is unfortunate that the conditions are not resort-quality, but that's sort of the charm of the course. I will say this . . the starter "Rudy" would fit in at any course I've ever played! He is top-notch . . makes you feel welcome and comfortable before your round. Don't head to Apache Stronghold expecting great conditions. But if you do go, be prepared to be amazed at the layout of this course.

I try to play this course every time we get up to Northern Arizona . . which after playing it this weekend (7/2010) isn't often enough! My wife and I played. We were paired up with a local "Henry" who was a fantastic partner. Troon has recently taken over management of this course, and it certainly shows in their customer service, which was top-notch. There are very few flat lies or shots on this course, and it's certainly one that requires some thought before making any shot. One would think that this course could easily be overpowered . . but in many cases leaving driver in the bag is the best shot. I used some strange combinations of shots . . example on the 18th a 581Y par 5 . . driver, PW, 6iron to reach the green in regulation. Inherently, that seems wrong to me . . to be hitting PW on the 2nd shot on a long par 5 . . but it's the best I've ever played the hole (Thanks Henry for your insights) . . This course has always been a load of fun . . and now with Troon taking over . . it's even better! They have some great "stay & play" summer deals . . we had a "brunch & golf" deal for $49 which is well worth the $$ . . Might have to make plans to get to Prescott more often!

Played on 6/26/2010 in 106 degree heat with a 1pm tee time. Wasn't really too bad. I was expecting it to be much worse, but there was water on nearly every hole, the cart girl came around frequently and you can't beat the pace of play. Our 4some was behind a 5-some (members) and we very rarely had to wait. There is a little bit of browning of the fairways, which is pretty normal this time of year in Tucson, but that just meant they were fast and made everything longer. The greens were smooth and fast. They putted very true. Still my favorite course in the Tucson area.

One of my favorite courses to play in Tucson. Played the Rattler/Roadrunner 9's on Saturday 6/19/10. There were a couple of brown spots on the fairways, but the course is in great shape. The greens were hard and fast. Downhill putts were downright scary! Customer service great as always. Course does not have on-cart GPS so it's best to play with someone who has played the course before. Otherwise you've got some blind shots and unknowns around the corners. Great course. I love the Rattler 9. Worth a play if you are in Tucson. Summer prices are much lower than winter peak season prices.

Played this course over the Memorial Day weekend. Was in as good a shape as I have seen it in a long time. Very nice muni course. Greens were a bit slow . . and they had "oversold" tee times, so there was a bit of a delay in getting started, but overall a good experience. One of the enjoyable aspects of the round was the guy that filled out our 4-some was visiting from SoCal and Steve says he was one of the "original members" of GK . . was fun playing with him and getting to know him.

Played this course for the 1st time (but not the last) on 3/13/2010. It was the 2nd Johnny Miller designed course I have played with Badlands in LV being the other. Although the environments are very different, you can tell Miller used much of the same philosophy in his design. There was a lot of elevation change at Maderas. Elevated tees and elevated greens. Not a lot of forced carry off the teebox (we played the Blues at a 138 slope), but quite a few forced carries over trouble to the greens. The greens were HUGE and quite undulated. The rolled very true as long as the putt was hit firmly with confidence. If you tried to "baby" the ball in the hole, then there was a lot of hidden (at least to me) break right around the pins. I struggled on the course . . hadn't played in about 6 weeks . . and quite frankly, it was hard. But very fair! There were shots to be made I just couldn't make them the day I played. This is what I would call a "2nd shot course" . . for the most part, the trouble didn't come off the tee . . but came instead on your approach shot. Gotta agree with Steve663 on the par 5's . . they were tough! Most courses I play have pretty easy par 5's . . this course had some very difficult par 5's . . The staff was beyond great, very easy going and helpful. Will definately play this course again when I get back to the San Diego area!
