Played here on Labor Day (9/03) with the wife. We drove down to Carlsbad for the weekend and since we've never golfed here we thought we'd give it a try. Weather was about 82 degrees, but you do get a little coastal breeze. The course was packed, and our 9:18a tee time was about 10 minutes late. The course is in pretty good shape, not the kind of shape that you would expect if you paid the $110 rack rate they were asking, but was worth what we paid. The tee boxes were good, not too chewed up. The fairways were mostly tight and green, with a few brown and bare spots here and there. The sand traps were pretty loose, not too compacted or dirty. The rough was pretty thick and on a couple shots I could feel the grass twist my clubface. The greens were in very good shape, the roll was quick in the morning but not unfair. They did firm up quite a bit around noon. The undulations on some of the holes were ridiculous, so 3 putts can come quickly if you're not on the same level as the flagstick. Even from the blues tees the course plays long. A lot of forced carries and blind tee shots make it a challenge. When in doubt on this course...go with one more clublength. The back 9 is definitely tougher than the front 9, and overall the course isn't for the weak of heart. As mentioned in previous reviews, there is a lot of cart path to travel, a lot of airplanes flying overhead, and transmission towers throughout the course. That being said, if you can find a good deal online, this course is worth it. Definitely worth the green fees if you're a SD or Carlsbad resident, or if your a member.

PS...I heard that they will be aerating the course soon, so check with proshop to find out details.

Played with the wife and a buddy Sunday afternoon. Weather was great and the course is in pretty good condition. The greens were well taken care of and fast, but not unfair. The fairways were hit and miss, as mentioned in an earlier review, some bare and brown spots, but overall in good shape. Rough wasn't overwhelming, but like the fairways there were some areas that needed some work. Tee boxes were okay, not too much trouble finding a spot to tee up. Was in a bunker only once and the sand was extremely playable, however my wife also found a bunker and her sand was more like hard dirt. The pace of play looked like we were in for a long day after hole #1, but it picked up to where we finished in 4 1/2 hours. We did get stuck behind a 4-some playing from the tips and let me just say if your drive barely reaches the fairway or if you have to hit a hybrid for your tee shot on a par 3...move up to blue or white!!! Cart girl was friendly and came by often, and marshal's were on top of slow play.

Overall, a solid course and a great deal at $40 with cart.

2nd day of our golf trip up to the Central Coast. My wife and I thoroughly Monarch Dunes yesterday, and we had an equally good time playing Cypress Ridge today. Absolutely beautiful course running thru a nice community. Houses line most of the holes. Different layout and challenges from yesterday, quite a few doglegs and blind tee shots. The greens were in great shape and were ridiculously fast. Fairways were green and tight, only a few brown patches here and there. Rough wasn't too thick, could salvage the hole if you landed in it. The sand in the bunkers was actual sand and not gravel or dirt. No real complaint here except that we never saw a beverage/snack cart the whole time. We usually bring snacks and water, so it wasn't a big deal, but if you go there empty, could make your round a little uncomfortable.

Played with the wife on Friday at 1230, weather was cool, but heated up later. This is a solid links style course that was challenging, but not overwhelming. Greens were fast, but can use some work. Lot of unhealed pitch marks and different grass growing on the greens. The fairways were in pretty good shape, and the rough wasn't punishing. Was only in the sand once and it was more like hard dirt. The tee boxes could use some help, but other than that, this course worked well for us. The pace of play was pretty good, about 4 hours to finish our round. One of the better courses in the area.

Came up to Santa Ynez Valley for some wine tasting and golf. My wife and I played The River Course at Alisal yesterday and teed off at La Purisma at 930 am today. Was great weather for golf and the course is in excellent shape. Greens are ridiculously fast, and the pin placements were nasty. The rough was punishing, if you could find your ball in there good luck on your next shot. This course plays long (played from blues) and was extremely unforgiving on bad shots. That being said, we had a blast and enjoyed the course views and challenge. Our oonly complaint was that like yesterday at Alisal there was no cart girl, maybe it was because it was an early Tuesday. Also, there is no Marshal to enforce pace of play, so we got stuck behind some old guys who hit every shot OB and spent 10 minutes looking for their ball only to drop and shank another OB. Didn't have the common sense to let a faster twosome play though, but we finally went ahead on the turn...ended up with a 4 hour round.

TIP: Bring an extra sleeve or box of balls!

Came up to play here on Monday with my wife...both of us have never played this course before. Course is in great shape, greens are fast, fairways are tight. Pretty flat course, not particularly overwhelming, but was just what we wanted. We went out as a twosome and despite being stuck behind three hackers playing from the tips (eventually played thru), we finished in less than 4 hours. The employee at the pro shop was really friendly, however our only complaint was there wasn't a cart girl, and the snack bar at the 9th was closed. Would've been nice to get some ice cold beverages or a sandwich at the turn.
