Golf Course Reviews: California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Florida, Hawaii!Played Coyote Hills recently for the first time in almost ten years. I had always looked forward to coming back out to this challenging, narrow course after it had beaten me up so badly fresh into my golfing career, but even the more seasoned golfer in me still had a very tough time on this particular day to turn things around.
Few courses in SoCal will take the driver out of your hands more than Coyote Hills. The angles, elevations and split fairways make it a luxury more than a necessity in most cases, but there are plenty of holes too with forced carries. The par 3s are all very unique but each daunting in their own way. Few holes are 'wide open' and even the short par 5s throw plenty of trouble at you to make you work very hard for a good score. The layout some might call 'gimmicky' but if you make wise club selections and put a good swing on the ball, you will be rewarded.
Course conditions were pretty nice all around with the greens being not diabolically fast, but incredibly tricky with their breaks and very subtle with the dropoffs that make you think twice about speed on every single one. I had a tragically poor putting afternoon and it's because I could never maintain the confidence putter speed. But the surface conditions were quite good.
The fairways had mostly good coverage with some thin spots here and there, while the rough (where you can find it) was quite playable and comfortable. There are a lot of trouble areas with mulch and trees or just plain OB that you have to navigate, and also avoid all the oil derricks that are still in operation around the course (but do give it some interesting character). Tee boxes were mostly in good shape but some a bit thin and the par 3s could use some love ... all flat and level though (we played from the blue tees). Bunkers were still a bit on the grainy side after the recent rains so I am reluctant to give them a poor rating but that's what this site is all about - the truth of the moment.
We had cart service multiple times throughout the day and that was good. There is a small snack shop open near the starter at the turn as well. POP was very interesting as I thought we were moving pretty decently most of the day but was very surprised when we were teeing off on the 18th hole that we were just over five hours. I suppose that's a good testament to an interesting and fun course that the slow play didn't detract from the overall experience that much.
You need to play this course plenty of times I think to really shoot some low scores here as a lot of the visuals can throw you off, but you'll have a good time doing it no matter what. I'm glad I finally had a chance to come back and knock it off my sub-100 list finally (mission accomplished!), but I know I have better rounds in me here and I intend to come back and make a better go of it.

Despite the forecast of mid 70's temperatures, it was rather brisk out when I tee;'d off at 7am. (46 degrees) Course has weathered the recent rains well, and to my surprise, they finally allowed carts off the path. Fairways have come in very nicely. Greens had decent pace and rolled true and were very receptive. Overall, the course is looking good, and I expect things only to improve from here.
Made it out 9/24/25 to the SCGA Del Mar outing. Spectacular day at a remarkable place. This is one of the finest overall golf experiences one can have. The moment we arrived a few guys picked up our bags and took them straight to the carts. We were able to walk around the locker room and clubhouse, both of which are covered in trophies and plaques recognizing the USMC as the Del Mar CC has deep ties to the organization, and may still run tournaments to support our troops. Everything is as nice as you could imagine, super clean, and incredibly quite. The pro shop guys were friendly, and the cart lady was a real pro. The practice green and facility is top notch, everything seems new. We were handed options of box lunches as we took to the first tee in a new cart, that was adorned with gator skin style seats and GPS. All that being said, the true star of the show is the course. Each hole is carefully designed with unique challenges and Del Mar has a lot of them. Elevation, perfectly maintained and placed bunkers, some long holes, and water. There is very little room for error here and almost every hole is its own unique look. You almost never can "hit it from the other fairway" if you know what I mean. Trying to figure our way around this place on our first time was challenging. The greens rolled pure, they were not as fast as they could be mostly due to the amount of rain over the prior few days. The traps are some of the nicest I have ever played at and tee boxes were perfect. Was it worth the price? 100%. The experience was one I will never forget. This is the place that if you ever get a chance to play or spend time at, you should. A bucket list type of private experience that probably won't be available often, unless you know someone, have a ton of dough, or sign-up with a group than can get out there. Would play here again in a heartbeat.
Lucky day. Called the starter at 11:30 and he said he had an opening for a single at 12:07. Perfect!! Hot tailed to the course and walked right up to the first tee. $52 to walk. POP 4.25hrs. which is great for this place. Finished around sunset and I played 1&2 again in the dark.
Course is in good to very good condition.
Blue tees were ok. They were level. But had quite a bit of divot damage at the actual markers. Just tee it up about 1-2ft behind the markers and it was all good.
Fairways were absolutely perfect. Definitely the highlight of the course. Good roll, perfect cushion and great coverage. Super stoked to see these fairways like this.
Bunkers were just fine. No complaints.
Rough was juicy in spots, but fairly manageable for the most part. The whole course is looking healthy and lush right now.
Greens obviously held shots after the rains, but they were a little bumpy. But they still had some quickness to them. I bet in a week or two after they can dry out, these greens will be killer.
Service here is always spot on. Easy recommend.

played sat 11/22, 8am shotgun. Happy to be out here again, my favorite public in socal. Course in really good shape considering all of the rain. Cart path only. Course not too soggy. Greens running on the slower side as one would expect, but rolled true. Rain came down for an hour, but sunny the rest of the round. Good day when I can play Aviara.
played fri 11/21 and sun 11/23. friday rained all night and stopped around 9am, teed off at 11. cart path only, course a little soggy. greens slow and bumpy. Went back sunday where it had time to drain. 4 holes cart path only. Bunkers in decent shape. Greens had been mowed and rolled, I think. Still soft, but a bit faster... about a 10. I last played here maybe 20 yrs ago when they first opened, and I don't remember anything from then. Playing this weekend, I found the course to be fun and challenging... A few challenging driving holes, but mostly big landing areas. Greens big and undulating. The last 4 holes are labelled "The Quandary" and it's definitely the most challenging holes on the course, and most interesting as well. Course in decent shape considering all of the rain that's been happening. I could play here everyday... fun course.
This private course is about an hour north of Sacramento. I have played it a handful of times in the last 12 years. Recently twice this year (2025) using the Golf moose voucher.
Since GK and moose are working events in SoCal I asked John to put this course up for review in case a GK'er wants to "Know Before You Go" Here goes. 1:20 tee time
Consistent CC level of course conditions and walk-able. Most recent visit 10/30 was a great weather day and the tee sheet after 11 was filled with Golf moose players using their 10/31 expiring vouchers. That made it for slow play and we skipped the middle three holes on the back 9. To find open spaces coming in 16-18.
Greens had been micro punched but rolled real smooth firm and speedy. Great bunkers with white sand and carpet like fairways and penal thick rough. Mature Oak tree and redwood borders course can be and stretched to 6900 from the tips. All the golf anyone needs.
Warm-up areas (practice green, driving range) close to modest clubhouse. With outside snack shack for beverages. Laid back CC style. More pickups than sedans can seen in the parking lot and blue jeans ok for course attire.
One of the best courses in the area attested by the player I met last Sat. He mentioned the dues at around $400 a month. I think a discount is offered if you live long distance away.
Now you know if you see the golf moose deal again. Buy it and try it. I will make the hour drive with voucher in hand and use it early. Recommend.

Late fall review playing same time different date as last few.
On the predawn Nw drive and the first 4-5 holes the fog factor came into play. Almost burning off completely but then coming in as high clouds 42 degree tee off temp joined by two some from Yuba City to the north. Good company made it a fun round to compare notes and tales.
As 1st four-some got around nicely no rush under 4 hour pace 3rd out.
Wet with dew through the green made scoring more difficult. Leave season and rough thick enough to lose a ball or two. Which overall is good because it makes the course more challenging. Greens fresh mowed in good muni shape. Didn't visit any bunkers and with improved scoring (triple/triple) on the front 9 back to back par 5's (4&5) could have made a better than average total on the card.
Still a recommend as a good value and vibe.

Played 11/23/25. The greens were in great shape. We have had a little under 5.5" of rain this past week so it was cart paths only, and there was plenty of slopy fairways and standing water on some holes. It was definitely a lift clean and place type of day. The pace of play started off a little slow, but picked up and really moved well on the back nine. Give it a week or so to start to dry, but it is still a fun round of golf. The bunkers could use a little TLC.
Out early on a windy morning, but very pleasant temperatures. Course has handled the recent rains very nicely. CPO still which is appropriate given the amount of rain we experienced, but no residuals such as standing water in the fairways or bunkers. Greens maintain a good pace and roll very true and were extremely receptive, even for my less than stellar ball striking. Over all the course is in really nice shape. Congrats to the maintenance staff for all their efforts.
Bob and I joined SDF at Tehama Friday morning to kick start an upcoming week of great golf. Well at least great golf courses. The way I’m playing is an entirely different story. Anyway, we caught the first day of some glorious weather. This course is always in top notch condition and today was no exception. Even after a week of rain the course was only CPO on about 3 holes. Very few wet spots on the course which is mainly due to the severe slope and elevation changes on every hole. It also makes a for a fun and challenging track. Definitely a far cry from a flat parkland been there done that layout. Also, the stunning views of the ocean (from afar and high up) and the mountainous terrain on the back give this place a surreal and quaint vibe. The only house you will encounter is Clint’s house which has a driveway that goes through the middle of the course!
Greens at Tehama are the fastest in the business. Lightening fast in all directions. Including uphill against the grain. Just wicked. Rough was tough. Longer than usual due the recent rain which has kept them from mowing in a while. Everything was lush and green as expected. Customer service was great as always. One minor drawback is the lack of GPS in the carts.
Well, it’s a bike ride tomorrow then off to Vegas to see if I can double down on some pars and maybe find an Ace I can keep!

Played today. Course was a little drier than I expected. Unfortunately we are having rain again. Tee boxes were playable. The new sand in the bunkers withstood the rain well. But players are not raking them sad to say. Fairways damp of course and mud on balls expected so not very good lies. But I was impressed with the greens. Even with the rain they still had some firmness which they did not have last week. But they still putted slow. The usual great service in the shop. And restaurant was open serving good food and great prices.
