Played the Nicklaus Tournament course on Saturday, 9/24 for the SCGA One Day event and really enjoyed it. It had been over four years since the first time I'd played it, and I still remembered many of the holes. The greens were pretty good, but were very firm. I saw many fairways because I had a great driving day, and there were mostly in great shape. A few spots had been recently re-sodded in a few fairways, but nothing crazy. I was in a few bunkers and while the sand was heavier, and a little more shallow compared to other places, they were in very good shape. Tee boxes were almost perfect.

Played in the SCGA One-Day event at Rio Hondo yesterday from the Blue tees at 9:2ish. Hadn't played here in about 15 years. Pretty disappointed with the presentation of the course. Multiple times during the round, my playing-partners (strangers before yesterday) all mentioned how bad the chosen pin positions were. Many of them were in sections of each green which had visible bare spots while other sections looked smooth & healthy. Multiple par-3 tee boxes looked like they hadn't had the markers moved in days! Completely browned out and full of divots! To their credit, the fairways were pretty good, and the two bunkers I hit were also good too. Pace of play was terrible b/c it was a tournament round. I won't return here unless it's a tournament round, and unless it gets more positive reviews from other players.

Played Escena on 5/14 with a group of friends. Scheduled for 7:30 & 7:38am, we teed off about 20 minutes late because a bigger group of friends immediately in front of us was either late to arrive and/or terrible at getting off the first tee. POP was just over 4.5 hours. Really enjoy playing here, with generous fairways and typically very good course conditions, and this round was no different. We observed level tees, lush fairways (maybe a couple of thin spots), and smooth greens. The one fairway bunker I hit into however, had a golf-ball sized rock in it (under the surface) and other smaller rocks in there too. My playing partner also hit a bigger rock in a bunker too! Hopefully, they can clean out the bunkers by the time we return next year.

Played 4/30 as part of the SCGA One Day Series and was my first time playing Olivas Links. Pace of play was just above 5 hours but I assume some of that was because of the tournament setting. Was impressed with the blue tees, all were in good shape with minimal divots. Fairways were semi-lush and mowed short. Some had GUR clearly outlined. I was only in one greenside bunker and it had good sand (even though I played a bad shot). Greens were slower than I expected. Rolled smoothly, but did not roll-out especially coming down a couple of tiered greens (front to back section of #9...as well as front to back/left section of #13). I'd like another crack at this course, and will look to come back in the future.

Late review...I played Bayonet while on vacation on 3/23 using GolfNow. Was scheduled to play with another single but he never showed, so I played solo while my wife tagged along as photographer. Every single tee-box was perfect. Almost every single fairway was perfect as well (#8 had an application of sand). Rough looked uniform and healthy. Greens were slightly slower than what I expected, but it had rained a lot in the days leading up to my round. The two bunkers I hit were in great shape too. I zipped around in exactly 3 hours. Almost every hole has elevation change and choosing the correct club in very important to scoring well. Would like to play again in a few years.

Played Desert Island Country Club yesterday (2/21) for an SCGA One Day event. Arrived early to warm up and used the far end of the perfectly manicured driving range. It was a shotgun tournament which started at 8AM and we finished just before 1PM (5 hr. POP). This was my first time playing DI and I couldn't have been more impressed. Every tee box was level and perfectly maintained. Fairways were perfect too. Rough was consistent and showed good definition against the fairways. Greens were very good. Medium to fast pace, and barely any ball marks. Staff was organized and very attentive. Will look forward to playing there again for future SCGA events, now that I've got a little course knowledge under my belt.

Was supposed to play Goose this morning but it was super windy, so we moved over to the South Course instead. My buddy and I were lucky to get out at all since it was Presidents' Day. Teed off 15 minutes late, and wound up getting around in exactly 4.5 hours. It actually felt slower because we waited on many shots. The South is still in winter-mode with thin fairways and nonexistent rough. The greens were very fast and smooth too. They would be better if more people fixed their ballmarks. All four of the greenside bunkers I hit where filled with excellent sand and smooth. Tees were level, but quite thin. Hopefully the course greens up as we get closer to Spring.

I played yesterday 12/23 on the Champions and teed off about 8:45. Check-in was great, staff was helpful and offered to let us go early if we warmed up quickly. Played the first two holes in fog before it lifted. The course was greener than I though it would be during winter, but most holes had brown dormant patches scattered around. Rough was growing out and was again thicker than I thought it would be. Greens were slow to medium speed and many had pitch marks. My group did our best to fix as many as we saw. I was in two greenside bunkers which were hard-packed after the recent rain and impossible to hit from. The one fairway bunker I hit was also hard-packed and easy to hit from. Many bunkers had standing water in them as well. The tee boxes were hit and miss. The par 4s & 5s were pretty good, but every par 3 tee was mounded and full of divots and sand. Not impressive. Overall, I'd wait to return until springtime or early summer and hope for better conditions.

Played 11/27 at 9:15am and was surprised it wasn't busier. My foursome was able to check-in easily and find our way to the range to warm up. After doing so, we looked for a putting green, but the practice green was closed. So, we asked the starter to go early and he let us out 30 minutes ahead of schedule. We played behind a threesome and never saw them after they teed off. We played the "Combo" tees they were in very good shape. Minimal divots (Par 3s) and very green from overseeding. Fairways were good. Mostly green with a handful of oversaturated water areas to avoid. Greens looked beautiful...from far away. Many of them had numerous ill-repaired divot marks (and a few fresh ones) which caused many of my group's putts to hop all over their intended line. It was noticeable. Greenside bunkers looked soft/fluffy, but fairway bunkers were more firm with pebbles throughout. 7/10

Played 11/21 in an SCGA "One Day" event at Maderas GC and was really looking forward to it. It was the first time I'd been there and knew it was going to be challenging because of previous reviews on GK. The course lived up to those tough reviews! First of all, the greens are diabolical. They were some of the fastest greens I've ever played on, and they weren't even in great shape! There was still a noticeable amount of sand on them from being punched 3-4 weeks ago. I normally average 30-32 putts per round...and I had 44 putts at Maderas. Two other players in my group putted off of the 2nd green (front pin) from middle of the green! The rest of the course was dormant. The rough was a tan color and the fairways were only green because they had been sprayed that color. The fairways conditions were good otherwise. Tees were flat and in good condition. Both bunkers I was in had good sand in them as well. I can see it's a good layout, but I won't be coming back here unless it's a different time of year (Spring or Summer) and at Twilight rates.
