Madera Muni has got to be one of my favorite most reasonably priced golf course in the Fresno area! Very easy to walk course, and for $22 bucks on the weekdays, you can't beat it. The front 9 is on the outer parts of the course and the back 9 is tightly wound inside the front.
The front has a few little quirks, starting off with Hole 2 which is a short dogleg left Par 4. There is a small gully that has occasional water in parts of it, right inside 100 yards, longer hitters that can clear it will have a wedge into the green, smart play seems to play up the right side and you will have a clean shot into the green and will avoid the bunkers left. Another hole on the front is Hole 7 which is another dogleg left, and sets up for someone to hit a nice hard draw, or hook around the corner and will again, leave you with a wedge into the green. If the tee's are back and to the right, you can potentially cut the corner off and leave yourself with a good shot in. But there is OB left. For the most part the Front 9 is pretty straight forward.
The back 9 seems to be a bit longer. Starting with a bottle neck fairway into a very large green protected by trees on the left and a large bunker to the back of the green. The next few holes are holes that can be taken advantage of and a good score is very possible. The Par 4 13 is a hole where you have some options with the eucalyptus tree on the left blocking out about a quarter of the fairway. You can take a few different approaches with this hole, you can go over it, a nice draw around it or just play right of it completely, but doing this can put you into the trees, and this section of trees seems to be the worst place to play out of on the entire course. If you can manage this hole with birdie being a possibility you are setting yourself up nicely. Two of the final 3 holes have water in play, the Par 4 16 and Par 5 17 can wipe away a good score if you drop one in the water on one of these two holes. What makes it worse is the hard pan around the water. If you fade the ball hard and hope it can hold up if you get in the area, you are going into the water 9 times out of 10. The Par 5 17 is a great hole with water on both sides, so getting something down the middle is great, trying to get your drive past the tree right at the dogleg right is key. Laying up is not a bad thing, but making sure you keep it short enough to put it over the water with a draw is vital, because being blocked out and having to hit a big fade around the tree can leave you with a tough third.

Couple more things about this course. One is the greens, they are probably some of the bigger greens in the area, and they run pretty good most of the year. When playing this course, playing the slope of the greens can and will help you out a ton, but also playing below the hole is vital, and most of the greens all funnel to the middle of the green. Lastly, one of the two negative about this course is, there seems to be a lot of muddy areas, and not just sporadically, but a lot of times in the landing areas, which sucks a lot of roll out of a good tee shot. I've had great drives plug and I've had them catch up in muddy areas which disappoints, especially when you think you ripped one! Second, is the bunkers, most of them are baked out and rock hard, due to the summer heat. So hitting a bunker shot more like a chip shot can save you a shot or two!
All in all, I like this course a lot, you can get out of trouble fairly easy on most holes, and the pace of play is pretty good.

I have played this course now a handful of times. I played 27 holes today which was around 90* when we teed off and by the time we finished it was 105*. But I've also played this course in the cold, in the rain and in the wind. So, I've played this great course in all the elements I guess!
This course starts out with a Par 5, and with this hole and pretty much a majority of all the Par 4s and 5s, there is fairway bunkers that are in the ideal positions to land in. So, having a straight drive to avoid the fairway bunkers is key, but also if you slice, or hook something left or right, make sure you keep an eye out for it, because the thick grass will eat up any shot, and then the next shot that grass will grab your club and you can hit it an inch, or if you get lucky you can proceed down the fairway.
There are some great holes on this course, like the short Par 4 4th is very drivable and the couple of short Par 5s that if you can hit a good drive and position yourself well or happen to catch one of the slopes and have your ball run out another 10-20 yards you can go at some of these greens in 2. Also, the Par 5 15th, it can get stretched out to over 600+ yards from the tips, and is a very tricky Par 5, with trouble nearly every shot. There are two extremely short Par 3s, that can land a couple birdies on the card.
The greens have a lot of different breaks to them, but one thing with these greens, which make them some of my favorite in the valley, is they roll true, but have a lot of different breaks in them, and sometimes you will be left with a not so easy double breaking putt.
I really like this course, and wish it was not so expensive($50 on weekdays & $75 on weekends), which is one of the more expensive courses in the valley. But the twilight rates aren't that bad.
I love warming up here, they have a wide open driving range and wonderful short game area as well!
Lastly, this is one course that I love coming out to, because you can always count on finding more balls than you might lose. Today I found 4 misc. balls and 6 ProV's, I guess people who play ProV's don't need to look for there balls if they hit them in the thick stuff!HAHA

Sherwood Forest is a course out of the way, and not that many people outside the local area really know about it. But this tightly tree lined course, is a course where you need to be fairly straight because if you start playing out of the trees, you are in for an adventure, to say the least! Most of the greens are good sized, but quite a few dead spots that you have to navigate. Most of the time you want to leave it below the hole for an up hill putt, but if you happen to leave it above the hole, it can do some funny things.

Hardest stretch of holes are probably 7-9, which the Par 4 7th, is a dogleg left, hitting a draw around the big trees on the left is a great shot but you can also tee it up on the right hand side of the tee box and aim at the 150 marker for the straight hitters, but be careful of the big fade or slice, because there are trees right, that can sometimes hold a ball in, but other times puts your ball OB and in the parking lot. I've seen many balls go OB on both sides. The short par 4 8th is a VERY narrow fairway with OB left and a ton of trees right, hitting something other than driver here can be the play, but if you can hit a good drive you can leave yourself a short wedge into a sloping green for a birdie opportunity. Finally, the 9th which is another shorter Par 4, with a creek left and the same trees from 8 but now on the right. Your second shot has to be kept straight because the over hanging trees will keep you from anything else. Do not miss long on this hole, with the creek left of the green and OB behind the hole.

The back 9 is for the most part straight forward with a Par 5 14th that will make you decide to go over the same creek in 2 or lay up short of the creek and go at the green on your third shot.

All in all a low end muni course, but a fun little course to hack around at. But keep in mind, if you hit it in the trees, take your medicine and don't try to play hero and try something spectacular, punch out and live to see another hole!

Living right down the street from Riverside Golf Course means I play this course a ton! Especially with their Twilight and Super Twilight rates! Can walk after 4pm for $11 bucks and with a good pace can get a whole 18 in before the sun goes down! That's on a week day, weekend this place gets packed! But with their good rates, it is understandable.

Onto the course, this course is a solid test for any golfer. The toughest thing about this course is on a few holes, there is a lot of rollers, where you can hit a great shot, get up to it and it's on a down hill or up hill lie and your second shot turns into a hard shot. But after playing this course over the years, you know where you can miss, and you know where to aim to avoid these.
This course can play a lot tougher when it gets breezy, and especially right around this time of the year, when they are preparing for the Fresno City Amateur Tournaments, the greens are in great shape and are quick! The fairways are in very good shape, and the rough in many places is pretty thick and interesting to hit out of.
The back 9 plays a bit longer, with the Par 4 12th and Par 4 13th being some of the toughest holes on the course. One good thing about this course is the two finishing holes, a short Par 4 17th, which is a great birdie hole if you can keep your drive in the right half of the fairway, and a short Par 5 18th, another great chance for a birdie, and for the long hitters an eagle opportunity! All in all, this course is one of my favorites in Fresno! Always can go out as a single, and meet some good people to golf with, and the guys in the Pro Shop are good dudes!

I typically enjoy playing this course. Was out last week and if the wind is blowing this course can get pretty challenging! Fairways are in great shape. Greens were tough because they had been punched about 4 weeks prior, so had a couple 3 putts, but I am sure that will be fine within a few weeks. The one hole that worries me is the long Par 4 9th. The green looks in real bad shape. Was playing with some other guys that agreed that it looks like they might lose it. So many dead spots and on top of that it was punched. Hopefully they can get it together and fix it.
The rest of the course is in great shape. Love the back 9, especially 13, either over the two big Oak trees and go for birdie or bring it around and play for par. If you fly it over the Oaks, you do not see the small pot bunkers that can eat any ball that misses the fairway.

Overall solid course! Twilight is $35 with a cart M-Th. Will not pay $75 bucks on the weekend though!
