Visited SB again this week and played both Sandpiper and Glen Annie...previous review a few weeks back may have been too harsh.

Consider that Sandpiper was $180 today and Glen Annie was $54, without any on-line discounts (lots out there) means that we can play Glen Annie, almost across the street from Sandpiper, for at least three, almost four times for the same money as Sandpiper...granted the layout is NOT Sandpiper, nor is the location, but dollar for dollar I would say the conditions were almost as good as Sandpiper and the greens were actually markedly better at Glen Annie.

The greens today were as close to perfect as any we have played anytime in recent memory.
Unusually soft, holding approach shots, that would have bounced long in the past. Some ball mark damage, (come on people) very true, lush, consistent, not too fast.
Rustic has really got the greens dialed in. Super enjoyable.
Pace was a bit slower than typical. Never saw a marshal or the beverage cart. Fairways very good, rough lesser so. Bunkers very nice.
A "newer"? classification of calling the "natural" areas, the giant unmaintained bunker like areas, now labeled "natural areas", with blue stakes, now allows picking up loose impediments and grounding your club. No longer hazards, I guess.
Always enjoyable, today too.

First visit in a probably 4 years, usually find these two courses too windy for our afternoon rounds. Not too bad today. Nice ocean breeze.

The greens reported 10.3, fast but not unfair and very smooth. Certainly the best part of the course. Fairways very good, tee boxes worn but acceptable. Overall, well above average for a local/public track.

The course has matured nicely and is a challenging layout. Fees are fair. We will be back.

The Bear Mountain experience gets better and better each year! The greens are better now than anytime in memory.

The only maintenance issues holding this course out of what one would consider a "resort caliber" course is the on-going gopher issues and sand trap maintenance. Neither is a huge issue, but with both these addressed this course would rival the conditions of any Palm Springs resort course, or Sierra Star at Mammoth.

Been a while. Conditions have improved greatly. The La Purisima of old is back! (It may also be that they hosted the US Open qualifier the day prior too)

Always a favorite and we hit it right, Chamber of Commerce day, very few folks out on a Thursday afternoon, went out as a fivesome and finished in 4 hours....Some fairways are having some issues with a die off in spots, the greens are very true and not as fast as we have seen in the past...awesome day.

If you haven't been before or been in a while, it is worth the trip to play "Pebble Beach South".

Haven't made the trek from Ventura County to LV in years, tried again today. We recalled that the pace of play had been an issue here in the past. Nothing has changed for the positive.

Spoke to a few locals and they confirmed this is an everyday thing. We waited on each and every shot...waited on some tees for three groups to play....after 3 hours and 20 minutes we were done and walked off while waiting on our second shots on number nine.

Right on pace for a seven hour round.

So sad. Amazing views, fair pricing, very reasonable conditions but some regulars (according to the folks we spoke with and those we observed) play in fivesomes, line up every shot and putt like it was Sunday at the Masters, stand over every fairway shot while pondering club selection, take two or three practice swings, then hit it fifty feet. Wipe off the club face, get back in the cart and repeat the same thing another eight or ten times on the way to the green.

If this place didn't invent slow play, they have certainly perfected it.

Great location, amazing views, compact layout with lots of opposing fairways. Worth the occasional visit unless you are local.

Be sure to ask about "resident" rates, for SB county and adjacent county residents. If you don't ask...

Pretty reasonable conditions with the possible exception of the tee boxes...there is not a level spot to be found on any tee and the traps, mostly just raked dirt.

If you can find a discounted time on-line great but at rack rates...no thanks.

Whatever, or whomever is responsible for the condition of the greens here deserves a medal. They look artificial they are so perfect, smooth and true. Hard to believe in January. You won't find better anywhere.
Sadly, the same can't be said for the balance of the course. Lots of neglected maintenance items, empty ball washers, trash from previous rounds in the carts, weeds knee high in some areas. Overall kind of sad. This was once on par with a "resort course" experience, now with the big exception of the greens, a very much a muni sort of feel.

Course gets better and better every season. They are investing time and effort and the improvement is noticable and appreciated!

What a heartbreak. Sterling was once a great track, well maintained and on par with a resort course. The current situation is far different. It is still a good track, horribly maintained and on par with trashy muni course.

Very sad. We won't be coming back.
