Holes 6-7 are currently closed. I think 9 is next in the list. Remodeling/construction work is scheduled to continue—2 holes at a time until October. Aside from the holes under construction, the course is in fairly good shape. Once all the grass moves to Bermuda, the course will play firmer and faster. Should make for a more interesting and challenging track.

No trip to San Diego is complete without a round at Aviara. Like Ko said, it’s a favorite not only in San Diego but an all time top 5(ish) course for me. So after playing Torrey Pines North in the morning, I headed to Aviara for lunch and an afternoon round.

Yes, there is some serious course construction/maintenance going on but the course is still so fun to play. Currently holes 6 and 7 are completely closed while they put in all new grass. About three other holes are cart path only. Holes 10 and 17 have been broken up from par 5’s each to both holes now incorporate a par 3 and a par 4. The two temp greens on the makeshift holes are regular grass shaved down super tight. Other than that the course played normal.

Fairways were super lush and green except for one that is set to get re-done in a month or so when the other holes are finished. Greens looked a little shaggy but were very deceptive in that they rolled true at a medium fast pace.

The layout is so fun with three of the most gorgeous par 3’s anywhere. Water features galore and the absolute best staff anywhere, bar none. Joe is my favorite starter anywhere.

I love Aviara and am glad I went out and played.

Played Sunday 6/5, 8 am shotgun, 4:45 round. This is my favorite SoCal course (though TP south might have taken that spot). They are doing maintenance, so the ratings are not super accurate. Overall it's in really good shape. I know they punch 2 greens at a time, and then they split a hole or 2 to make 18 holes on 2 temp greens. We caught the perfect timing where all 18 holes were open. 2 of the greens 4 and 5 I think... were recently punched and were sandy/bumpy. The rest of the greens were in various stages of healing or not touched.. and it was pretty consistent. Running a quick 10 on the stimp. Rolled true. Then they are taking out and redoing ALL of their rough... so 2 holes were cart path only. And they ask you not to hit off anything visibily resodded. A few of the fairways had spots of resod as well. But I was pleased to see the course was not soggy/wet like it had been the last 2 times I played (a while ago)... And overall, the maintenance did not destroy the experience. Though that might not be the case when playing with temps. Had a great time and I still love this course.

Course is replacing all the rough with Bermuda sod—two holes at a time. As a result, there will be only 16 playable holes for the next 6 months or so. Surprisingly, they are not discounting the rate. ... Continue »

Course is replacing all the rough with Bermuda sod—two holes at a time. As a result, there will be only 16 playable holes for the next 6 months or so. Surprisingly, they are not discounting the rate. Even more surprising, it doesn’t appear to have dramatically reduced the number of players on the tee sheet. Currently, holes 1 and 18 are under construction. Hole 1 will be finished next week, and it will then partially reopen (cart-path only and balls hit into the rough will get a free/mandatory drop into the fairway). It doesn’t appear that any greens or tee boxes will be modified; just replacing the winter rye grasses with Bermuda.

As Aviara gets ready to host the LPGA tournament, the course will be cart-path only beginning March 10. Currently, about half the holes are cart-path only. Several tee boxes are off-limits.

As Aviara gets ready to host the LPGA tournament, the course will be cart-path only beginning March 10. Currently, about half the holes are cart-path only. Several tee boxes are off-limits.

The course will also be trying to jump start the summer growth on the currently mostly-dormant fairways, so some of the fairways will be roped off entirely and played as GUR.

Greens are in great shape.

Some significant tree removal in certain areas (e.g., between 10th green and 17th fairway)

When the course re-opens in April, conditions will likely be as good (or better) than they have ever been during the past year.

With the recent rains, course will be cart-path only for the rest of the week. Course conditions appear to be slowly improving. Greens are in very good shape.

I was very excited to play Aviara. I went to golf school here about 7 years ago and had amazing time and learn a lot. But was very disappointed in the course conditions. Bare spots around the greens and the fair ways were bare. If Aviara going to charge a $195 to play golf i would expect better conditions
