I got very lucky to be able to play the South Course today (3/15) as it will close to the public on 3/16 to get ready for the Kia Classic LPGA. This was my first time playing it. The course was in really really great condition (as you can imagine). There were workers everywhere getting it ready.
Layout: IT is a resort layout with nothing really special about it
Practice facility: Nice range (mat only) but you have to pay $10 if you are not playing that day
Tee Box: The most level and lush tee boxes I have played on
Fairway: Lush Carpet. Not a lot of divot marks.
Rough: Very deep and tough to get out of.
Sand: For the most part, soft and in great shape
Green: Rolled very well. Not terribly undulated and should be fairly easy for the LPGA

The Champions course did not look nearly as nice as the South. They are supposedly growing out the grass there and are hoping for a PGA stop in the near future.

Try to get out and play the South course in a couple of weeks. Should still be in great condition.

Played here Oct.22. Had not been here in 5 years. Course still does not seem to drain well. It had rained during the week but was sunny the day I played. Fairways were very wet in many places. Rough was long. Course runs through a lot of condos. Was on a golf package but would not be worth the $200/round the guys I played with paid.

The worse part of the course was probably the greens. very bumpy with footprints noticeable on several greens. Lucky for me, I had a buddy who's a member and he got us on for free. IMO, not worth the green fee.

Really disappointing conditions. Endless patches of dirt on the fairways and in the rough. This was the first time playing La Costa and it will be my last. I had a coupon so the round was free; I could never even imagine *paying* for a round here. There were major work crews working all over the course, especially on the greens. On one green, they didn't even turn off the power tools or stop working while I was putting. Pace was very slow, with several foursomes playing multiple balls. On the plus side, the cart guys were nice and it was nice to receive a complimentary bag of balls to hit the range with. However, given the conditions, no wonder they were giving away free rounds.

As the other reviewers noted, the course needs water desperately. The fairways were dried out in a few spots, but besides the astethics of it, still very much playable. The greens were in good shape... Continue »

What a great layout, most holes were shaped off the tees so you have to be creative to get on the correct side of the fairway so you can score. One beverage cart girl and she had a bad day as she rolled the cart on one of the fairways, she was ok but shaken up a bit.

This course is in abysmal condition. They should be embarassed to charge any green fee. Fairways are in terrible condition, greens are way below average, most sand traps had many rocks in them. A terrible, terrible experience. It has fallen so far since it used to host the Match Play. They need to get a tournament there to pump some money into course maintenance. Very disappointing.

Played sat 7/15, 5 hr round; course is in abyssmal shape; bare spots in the fairway, greens not bad; rough is dying. they say the city is rationing their water. but overall, i got the impression management didn't care a whole lot about customer service. wanted to buy a box of prov1's, at $20/sleeve, and no break on the box, i passed. they ran out of food at the snack shop. my buddy had to cook is own burger. i left very dissappointed, especially considering what i paid.

Played South a couple of times last week (after the rain), and the course is lush. 9 & 18 have their typical post-rain muddy-ness, but for the most part, it's in terrific shape. Rough is up, so hit it straight, or you'll be doing the Torrey South waltz (zig-zagging through the rough in search of a ball).
I really enjoy the laid-back feel here. Unless you run into a tournament, you'll get a relaxed, well-paced round on a challenging but enjoyable course. You pay a bit more to not feel rushed or slowed, but IMHO, totally worth it.
