How do I become a golf course manager or an instructor?
Monday February 15, 2010 12:16pm

Every week on the College of Golf's Facebook page we plan to open up the floor to our loyal fans, allowing you to ask a question to a PGA pro! This week Justin Eylandt asked the question:

“How do I become a golf course manager or an instructor?”

Answer:

Generally speaking, the most effective route to becoming a golf course manager or excellent instructor begins with gaining membership in the PGA of America. The steps for obtaining PGA Membership can be found at www.pgalinks.com. Most golf courses recognize the benefit of hiring PGA Members as General Managers and Directors of Instruction, and the PGA Professional Golf Management Program has established curricula that support these career choices. In fact, the PGA of America also has Certified Professional Program and Master Professional Program options dedicated to the fields of General Management and Instruction. The Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) is another avenue to becoming a General Manager, as is the Food and Beverage industry. However, opportunities for becoming a Director of Instruction at a recognized golf facility are limited without PGA Membership. Additionally, golf courses and management firms recognize the benefit of advanced education beyond high school, especially advanced golf education such as that offered by the College of Golf Keiser University.
