6/13/10: Peacock Gap (2)
Monday June 14, 2010 6:23pm

June 13, 2010: Peacock Gap, teetime: 10:01, teebox: championship (back), final score: 82

(Second time round at Peacock Gap recorded)***

1: par 4, 409 yards. Now trying to play from tips at Peacock. Still hit drive past fairway bunker right onto fairway. Then hit PW approach just onto green with left middle pin. Proceeded to just two-putt: PAR

2: par 4, 411 yards. Hit drive straight and far, but due to pin placement, went right into fairway bunker. Then hit 8 iron out of bunker onto front part of green, but it was unfortunately a back pin. Long putt led to three-putt: bogey

3: par 3, 175 yards. Hit 6 iron clean, but just not enough to go up hill, and it rolled back into front left bunker. Barely hit bunker shot on green, but it rolled onto fringe. Decieded to chip, and it went next to hole: bogey

4: par 5, 505 yards. Wanted to just hit fairway, so hit light drive only around 240 yards. Laid up with 4 iron and then hit good SW approach onto green. Two-putted from there: PAR

5: par 4, 385 yards. Didn't feel comfortable with 3 wood, so went with driver and faded it into far right trees. Had to punch out, and then hit into right side bunker. Then just got out of bunker and three-putted: double bogey

6: par 3, 176 yards. Back pin with heavily sloped green. Had to make sure it got there, so hit hard 6 iron and it just went into back trees. Then had to stay conservative on chip, so got it to 10 feet away. Two-putted from there: bogey

7: par 4, 297 yards. Tried to just hit fairway with 3 wood, but hooked it left and had to take penalty stroke. But from there hit great PW approach and one-putted, which turned into legit 4: PAR

8: par 5, 475 yards. Hit drive onto left side rough, which did not lead to good results. Then hit 4 iron approach into trees and couldn't find it. Then dropped and hit back of green with small putt left, which was with 9 iron. Then proceeded to two-putt, but due to a penalty stroke, it was a 6: bogey

9: par 4, 352 yards. Hit 5 wood right where I wanted it to go, which was just to left of being able to carry water. Then pulled PW approach and was forced to chip. It led to one-putt, however: PAR

Front 9 score: 42, GIR: 4/9, Fairways hit: 3/7

10: par 3, 133 yards. Tough pin placement with it being on right on small hill. Not good PW shot, although it was on green. It was pulled, which led to a very long putt. It led to a three-putt: bogey

11: par 4, 435 yards. One of the toughest holes on the course, and it was one of the best results for me that day. Hit drive, which was just moving left, and it went 299 yards. Then hit 9 iron shot behind green, which forced a chipping situation. Chipped, and then one-putted: PAR

12: par 5, 546 yards. Wanted fade on drive, and it was moving just left again, but it only went into rough. Laid up with decent 4 iron shot. Then pulled PW shot near tree next to green. Chipped almost next to pin, but missed very makeable putt: bogey

13: par 3, 197 yards. Opted for 4 iron, but it faded too much and it was just short of green. Had to chip, and then two-putted: bogey

14: par 5, 487 yards. Very interesting and pleasing result on this hole. Hit drive down right side and far, so it gave me an opportunity to go for it in two. Hit 3 wood shot that was just moving left and it went on left side rough next to green. With funnel green, just chipped it lightly. With pin in the middle of the funnel, the chip shot went up the hill and rolled right back INTO THE HOLE. EAGLE ( First ever eagle in my life)

15: par 4, 359 yards. Opted for 3 wood, and this time it went straight. Went with 8 iron on approach and took divot, which made it fall short. Then did not hit good chip near hole, as it barely made the green. Then I was just short on the putt, which made me regret the bad chip: bogey

16: par 3, 155 yards. Used 8 iron, and I sliced it near another hole's teebox. Had to take penalty stroke, and I chipped and two-putted from there. Hard to putt because of geese poop all over green: double bogey

17: par 4, 329 yards. Tried to carry 4 iron over fairway bunker, and it was not successful. It went just short of bunker, but it went left as well. Then hit 9 iron approach too far and almost went into back weeds. Was able to chip on and two-putt: bogey

18: par 4, 435 yards. Hit drive that was just moving left. Then it bounced off of hill behind fairway and trickled back onto fairway. With front pin, went with 9 iron, and it was left just short. Then chipped just next to hole: PAR

Back 9 results: 40, GIR: 3/9, Fairways hit: 5/6

Final Results: 82, GIR: 7/18, Fairways hit: 8/13

Final Thoughts: I felt that I played pretty decently, especially since I played from the tips at Peacock for the first time in my life. My drives were better, but there is some concerns with the 5 wood and 3 wood. Putting is also starting to become an issue, as with some makeable putts available, I wasn't able to make them. Some irons work could do as well, but I'm almost at a point where I could break 80. Still, a decent round. Next: The next day, as it will be at Mare Island in Vallejo.

6/10/10: Presidio
Friday June 11, 2010 4:13pm

June 10, 2010: Presidio, teetime: 12:09, teebox: white, final score: 85

Front 9: par 36, 2975 yards. Back 9: par 36, 3122 yards.

                                                                                                     Hole-by-Hole Recap

1: par 4, 354 yards. Have always had great history on simple dogleg right hole. Streak ends here though. Drive sliced into trees and led to penalty stroke. Then, with uphill approach, hit 9 iron instead of PW and hit it behind green for another penalty stroke. Ended up chipping and two-putting: double bogey

2: par 5, 450 yards. Short par 5, but has big hill in middle of fairway. Plays much longer than scorecard indicates. Hit drive into right side bunker. Then barely hit out of bunker, and then hit barely over hill in fairway. Very agonizing, as drives were in bad slump with slices. Then hit approach shot into right side bunker next to the green. Then hit bunker shot right next to the pin, which led to an astounding 6: bogey

3: par 4, 371 yards. Did not have enough confidence to use drive on hole that has narrower fairway as hole goes on. Hit 4 iron not very far onto the fairway, which led to more than a 200 yard approach with uphill approach. Hit 4 iron in front of green, but not on. Then hit pitch onto green and two-putted: bogey

4: par 3, 127 yards. Simple, downhill hole. Hard at times because it can play too short. Anyways, hit PW off tee 10 feet away from hole on green. Made great putt after shot: BIRDIE

5: par 4, 297 yards. Short hole although slightly uphill. Needed to get confidence back with driver, so hit it, and it went down right side of fairway, thankfully. Hit SW approach shot away from pin, although on green. Then proceeded to make hard two-putt: PAR

6: par 4, 355 yards. Wanted to give driver a break, so opted for 5 wood on hole that has fairway sloping down to the right. Hit 5 wood down left side and hit tree, but landed on left side rough. Thought drive was fine, until I noticed that tree it hit was in the way, so decided to punch out with 4 iron and it almost went into right side bunker. Then chipped onto green and two-putted: bogey

7: par 3, 176 yards. Straight out hole, although usually plays longer due to wind. Wind didn't have impact though, so 4 iron shot went way too far and left big pitch. Pitched it on fast green and it went onto other side and fringe. Proceeded to three-putt from there: double bogey

8: par 4, 354 yards. Another hole with fairway sloping down right side. Hit drive too far to right and hit cart path and it went deep into woods. Took penalty stroke and hit 9 iron shot onto firm green. Rolled all the way to the back side, which led to a really long two-putt. Ended up two-putting, though: bogey

9: par 5, 493 yards. Needed to make something happen here to make up for double bogeys, and it happened. Hit drive down the middle on slight dogleg right hole. Ended up going 320 yards, and it left just around 170 yards remaining to hole. Hit 7 iron onto back side fringe, which left a 15 foot putt for eagle. Just left it short, but well-earned hole: BIRDIE

Front 9 score: 43, GIR: 3/9, Fairways hit: 2/7

10: par 5, 489 yards. Straight, but very uphill hole. Plays much longer than 490 yard hole. Hit drive badly to left, which led to penalty stroke. Then hit 4 iron shot that rolled off fairway into left side rough. Next shot next to tree, so punched out with 3 iron, and it almost went into bunker next to green. Just was short, so chipped on and two-putted, which led to a disappointing result: double bogey

11: par 4, 379 yards. Now this hole plays shorter than it seems because fairway slopes downhill severely after 150 yards. Didn't matter, as I hit another bad drive into the left. Had to take another penalty stroke, and hit shot into left side bunker. Another good sand shot, which led to a one-putt: bogey

12: par 4, 439 yards (HDCP #1 hole): Tough, long hole, but like #11 because fairway slopes down after about 150 yards. Hit drive very well and it went around 280 yards. Then hit PW approach shot just onto green on right side. Then proceeded to two-putt to get a 4 on toughest hole on course: PAR

13: par 3, 166 yards. Straight out hole, but slightly uphill. Played club up with 5 iron, and hit green with 12-15 foot putt left. Left first putt short, but then made second putt: PAR

14: par 4, 328 yards. Slightly uphill hole. Hit fading drive that barely missed fairway on right side rough. Had simple PW uphill approach shot, and hit it very strangely, as divot led to ball going farther, which made it hit back cart path and bounce back down towards green. Had downhill chip, and didn't do it too well. Two-putted from there: bogey

15: par 3, 147 yards. Downhill hole, and used 9 iron. Pulled it slightly, and landed in left side bunker. Had great sand shot, as it landed 5-7 feet away from cup. Unofortunately, missed easy one-putt: bogey

16: par 4, 349 yards. Tried to be precise with drive on slight dogleg right, and it hit off of the edge of the driver, which put it in the thick debris on the right side. Tough PW shot from there, and actually hit it well, but didn't play well to where the pin was, so was forced to chip instead of putt. Chipped it well, but missed another easy one-putt: bogey

17: par 4, 343 yards. Dogleg right and uphill hole. Sliced drive into adjacent fairway, and hole was lined with trees, so I had to punch out. Punched it out too hard with 3 iron, as it rolled past green and stopped at a fence behind the green. Took relief and had decent chip, but then acutally made one-putt for 4: PAR

18: par 5, 482 yards. Straight out hole, not hard hole if drive is kept straight. Proceeded to hit 312 yard drive down middle of the fairway, which led to a very easy approach to hit green in two. Then hit 7 iron shot into right side bunker. Hit sand shot well, but unluckily rolled to back fringe. Two-putted from there: PAR

Back 9 score: 42, GIR: 3/9, Fairways hit: 2/7

Final Results: 85, GIR: 6/18, Fairways hit: 4/14

Final Thoughts: Felt like I played pretty terrible, to be honest. Lost confidence in my woods after this round, so there will be time dedicated later on to working on that cause. Was able to act resiliently, as I had two birdies on the front nine and had two big pars on the back nine, espeicially on #12. Basically, every category was poor, except for bunker shots. Hopefully things go better next time. Next: Hopefully going to play Blue Rock Springs in Vallejo on Monday. Update: No Blue Rock Springs, but will play Peacock Gap in San Rafael on Sunday and then Mare Island in Vallejo on Monday.

6/6/10: Foxtail North
Sunday June 6, 2010 4:12pm

June 6, 2010: Foxtail North, teetime: 10:01, teebox: blue, final score: 82

Front 9: par 36, 3202 yards. Back 9: par 36, 3192 yards.

                                                                                                  Hole-by-Hole Recap

1: par 5, 533 yards. First hole a long one, but not too hard. Dogleg left, however. Hit drive to the left, which played well to the hole, but would not have done well on other holes. On left side rough while straight out rest of way. Hit 4 iron lay up to about 100 yards left. Fairway that was left was muddy because of earlier rainy day, and tried light PW to back pin, but was left just short of green. Not good, but then did PW pitch shot to back of green, 10-15 foot putt remaining. Missed it for a 6: bogey

2: par 4, 398 yards. Another dogleg left hole, as course is filled with doglegs. Hit another drive down left side, and it went past fairway bunker onto fairway. Had 145 shot left on another muddy fairway, and tried harder PW shot, but again caught too much mud and was left short. Hit SW chip shot, but missed putt again: bogey

3: par 3, 166 yards. Straight out hole, but plays a little longer. Used 6 iron and hit green with 15 foot putt remaining for birdie. Just missed it for 3: PAR

4: par 5, 488 yards. Basically straight out par 5, better to be left than right. Hit drive that I thought was too far to left whn it really was on left side of fairway. Then got greedy, as I wanted to hit green in two with 230 yards remaining and slightly uphill green. Tried 5 wood off fairway, and it went too far to the left and went into the houses. Had to take penalty stroke and chipped, two putted: bogey

5: par 4, 417 yards (HDCP #1 hole). Another dogleg left, and is longer than usual, so rated toughest hole on course. Hit drive what I though again was too far to left when due to the dogleg, it really was in the center of the fairway. Very surprised, and then hit PW approach onto green, two-putted: PAR

6: par 3, 139 yards. Another simple and short par 3. Wanted to be sure, so hit 9 iron instead of PW, and took divot on shot. Landed parallel to front pin on right side rough. Hit decent chip shot, but then missed easy one-putt: bogey

7: par 4, 397 yards. Somewhat hazardous hole, so tried to play it safe on drive, but ended up hitting it really high in air, so drive didn't even go 200 yards. Had really long approach shot, something like 180 left with hazard, so wanted to try my best to hit green on fly, so opted for 4 iron. Hit shot very well, but veered off green on left side. Ended up chipping and two-putting for 5: bogey

8: par 4, 361 yards. Just a straight out hole, although having somewhat narrow fairway. Hit rough on left side, but again hit PW approach short with no excuse this time. Then actually chipped well which led to one-putt: PAR

9: par 4, 303 yards. Short hole, slightly uphill on approach shot. Hit driver down middle of fairway, but landed around rough surrounding fairway bunker. Was sick of PW, so tried aggressive SW shot. Ended up hitting just behind back pin and rolling off onto back fringe. Had to chip, though, because fringe was long. Bad chip led to 7 foot putt that I missed: bogey (overall not very happy with way I ended)

Front 9 score: 42, GIR: 2/9, Fairways hit: 4/7 (Thankful for good amount of fairways hit)

10: par 4, 329 yards. Dogleg right hole in the sense of hole sloping to right with green on far right side. Have to stay left because all of right side is water hazard. This time, tried to cut over water so that I only had 50 or 60 yards on approach, so opted for 3 wood, hoping it would stay straight. This time, drive faded just into water, almost onto fairway, which actually would have been right next to the green. Took penalty stroke, ended up doing the usual chip and two-putt: bogey

11: par 4, 410 yards. Another dogleg left hole. Actually hit drive straight this time, which left decent approach shot left. Hit PW approach shot long enough this time with 148 yards left, and hit middle of green with back pin. Putt had lots of break, so I just hit it with authority and let break do its work. Putt went in: BIRDIE

12: par 5, 553 yards. Anothe dogleg left hole, and even longer than before. Hit drive down the middle of fairway again. Then hit 5 iron lay up shot becuse of hazard in front. Then hit SW approach onto back of green. Two-putted on downhill green: PAR*

13: par 3, 148 yards. Short hole with hazard in front. Went with 9 iron and hit middle of green. Just a two-putt from there: PAR

14: par 4, 358 yards. Was on a good streak going into this hole, but it stops here. Hit drive into houses on left side for penalty stroke. Then with another hazard in front, hit 9 iron onto back of green, which was not good because green slopes downhill, and it was front pin. Tough putt, and I three-putted: double bogey (first of day)

15: par 3, 139 yards. Another short 139 hole, but with wind against, opted for 8 iron. Took divot though, and was just left of green. This time was able to chip well, which led to one putt: PAR

16: par 5, 479 yards. Dogleg right this time. Very easy way to cut over trees to leave approach shot less than 200 yards left, if somebody can be precise enough to get drive to slice at right time. Attempted it, but drive went to left, unfortunately, and landed in fairway, but couldn't go for it in two. Laid up with 4 iron, but then hit used SW to hit back of green. Tough little downhill putt, maybe 10 feet long. Made it, though: BIRDIE

17: par 4, 390 yards. Wanted to attempt to break 80 for first time, so tried to focus as best I could. Cost me, though. Hit drive to the left, and it hit a tree and didn't leave me with an approach. Had to hit intentionally to the left and hope I could hit green from there. Was able to hit 5 iron right next to green, and then good chip led to 7-10 foot putt remaining for par. Missed it, which hurt my chances: bogey

18: par 4, 386 yards. Straight out hole, and I needed to par to reach 80, birdie to break it. Drive ruined everything, though. Hit drive to left and hits tree again. Have to hit left again, and it goes into a bunker for first time again. Actually hit bunker shot well, but it rolls way past green, as it never sat. Had very long putt for par, and like last time, it led to a three-putt: double bogey

Back 9 score: 40, GIR: 4/9, Fairways hit: 4/7

Final results: 82, GIR: 6/18, Fairways hit: 8/14

Final thoughts: Overall I thought the round went quite well. If only I hadn't struggled with my PW on the front nine, I really could have had a great chance to break 80. Back 9 went very well, and I was very pleased with the better results for fairways being hit, as I was able to build on what happened at Sharp Park. This round, though, had repercussions, as I don't like hitting drives to the left. To rebuild my fade, though, it could lead to drives starting off as slices before I can truly get my fade back. I hope my driver can go back to the way it was with a fade, although as of late, my driver has been in the fairway. To better utilize my drive, though, I need my fade back. Anyways, great round nevertheless. Next: Presidio in San Francisco with later than usual tee time.

6/3/10: Sharp Park
Saturday June 5, 2010 7:58pm

June 3, 2010: Sharp Park, teetime: 8:16, teebox: blue, final score: 83

Front 9: par 36, 3011 yards. Back 9: par 36, 3223 yards

                                                                                                Hole-by-Hole Recap

1: par 4, 370 yards. Straight out and wide hole. Good hole to start with to ease into round. Hit drive right down the middle and far. Then hit PW approach onto the back of green. First putt eratic, but second putt just gets in: PAR

2: par 4, 336 yards. Another straight and wide hole, went with 3 wood to get it in some work. Hit right down the middle again. Then opted for SW, but actually hit behind green slightly. PW chip was good, but missed around 7 foot putt: bogey

3: par 4, 366 yards. Narrower hole, and hit drive right next to left side cart path. Ended up having to pitch out with 3 iron, and had chance to hit green on line drive, but stopped in front of left bunker. Then hit PW pitch right next to hole, but it rolled to the end of green. Ended up two-putting: bogey

4: par 5, 462 yards. Short, slight dogleg right hole. Hit drive well but into left side rough. Drives started to have tendency of going to left beginning at this course. Then hit 4 iron well but went through tree hanging in front of left side of green and it fell just short. PW approach not that close to hole, but easy birdie opportunity missed due to very slow greens: PAR

5: par 3, 196 yards. Uphill and long par 3. Opted for 5 wood, which has had bad left side tendencies, and it didn't change. Went in front of 6th hole teebox, but was followed by good PW comeback for good par opportunity. Missed putt, though: bogey

6: par 4, 416 yards (HDCP #1 hole): Hole that is somewhat long and widens to left side. Had left side tendencies, but this time drive faded to right and landed next to right side cart path. After relief, used 9 iron from 148 yards and slightly downhill. Not good choice, as shot went well past green. Ended up pitching on and one-putting: bogey

7: par 4, 412 yards. Another hole with room to left. Hit 3 wood and landed on right side of fairway. Then hit PW approach on front of green with back pin. First putt short, but second putt goes to left side of cup and falls back in: PAR

8: par 3, 91 yards. VERY short hole, hard to pick club. Hit light PW and hit behind green. Chipped on with another good par opportunity, but missed it: bogey

9: par 5, 481 yards. Another shorter par 5. Hit drive down right side of fairway with 235-240 yards left. Perfect situation for 3 wood, but uncharcteristically pulled it into left side bushes for penalty stroke. Ended up hitting behind green, then hitting green, then two-putting, which left overall was just ugly: double bogey

Front 9 score: 42*, GIR: 3/9, Fairways hit: 4/7

10: par 4, 422 yards. Dogleg left, somewhat long too. Hit drive into fairway down the middle, but hit near huge mud circle, which could have been considered ground under repair, but took shot anyways and hit just short of left side bunker. Good pitch led to decent par opportunity, but missed it: bogey

11: par 4, 411 yards. Slight dogleg right this time, and hit drive almost too far to left this time. Then hit out of rough right onto middle of green and two-putted: PAR*

12: par 3, 208 yards. Long, but straight hole. Hit 5 iron just short of green, but then pitched near hole. Missed yet another makeable putt: bogey

13: par 5, 564 yards. Longest hole on course, but wide. Hit drive right down the middle, and then laid up with 4 iron. Left with just about 100 yards left, and went with SW approach. Pin on left, but shot faded to right side of green. Two-putted, however, to save 5: PAR

14: par 4, 386 yards. Another wider hole on the course. Hit drive down left side of fairway, but had to deal with muddy fairway. Hit 5 iron right at the pin, but it fell on the front fringe of the green. Tried chipping again, and the slow greens hurt me again. Had 10-12 foot putt remaining, and missed it: bogey

15: par 3, 137 yards. Short hole, so opted for PW off tee. Took divot, though, and hit just short of green. Again another bad chip, which left me with another 10 foot putt, and missed it again: bogey

16: par 4, 373 yards. A hole that favors fade. Hit drive, however, onto 17th hole fairway. Was able to bounce back very well, however, with 6 iron shot right onto green. Easy two-putt, which led to a 4: PAR

17: par 4, 352 yards. Shorter hole, and most regret about day came from this hole. Hit hardest drive all day, and it faded right in front of bunker right next to green for 290 drive. Then tried to be precise with front pin with SW, but it hit front fringe. Tried to chip again, and was too agressive. Then had 10 foot downhill putt, and missed it, which was extremely disappointing: bogey

18: par 5, 498 yards. Dogleg right that demands drive down left side of fairway. Instead, hit drive far, but into 13th hole fairway to the right. Hit good rebound shot with 5 iron with 70 yards remaining on hole. Huge disappointment, though, at cypress tree that blocks approach shots that come from right side of fairway. That was where I was. With advice, tried to hit line drive under with 8 iron, and it almost worked. Fell just short of green. Yet another chipping and one-putt opportunity that I could not capitalize on, which summarized why I couldn't keep score around 80: bogey

Back 9 score: 42, GIR: 2/9, Fairways hit: 4/7

Final results: 84, GIR: 5/18, Fairways hit: 8/14

Final Thoughts: Overall a decent score, as there was improvement in some areas and very bad signs in other areas. Did better with drives, as I hit over 50% of fairways, which is a good start. However, not hitting enough greens in regulation hurt, as it led to heightened importance of short game, and that struggled heavilly. The struggle there occurred, though, because of horrible conditions of greens, as they were extremely slow with some having flowers growing on them. Nevertheless, couldn't adjust properly and it cost me a chance to hover around the 80 goal that I now have. Next: Foxtail North in Rohnert Park on Monday. Update: Moved to Sunday, but still at Foxtail North.

5/31/10: Chardonnay Golf Club
Tuesday June 1, 2010 11:30am

May 31, 2010: Chardonnay Golf Club, teetime: 10:16, teebox: burgundy, final score: 84

Front 9: par 36, 3351 yards. Back 9: par 36, 3217 yards

                                                                                                 Hole-by-Hole Recap

1: par 4, 385 yards. Straight out hole, yet hit horrible slice drive into right rough past cart path. Yet with bad shot, hit great 7 iron shot just off pin, but found way into bunker. Hit bunker shot OK, onto fringe, but missed par putt: bogey

2: par 4, 422 yards. Shot favors right side for left side approach, yet hit drive into left rough and almost into vineyards. Bad lie, yet hit quality 8 iron that again found its way into a bunker. Good sand shot led to good opportunity for par, but missed it: bogey

3: par 3, 175 yards. Slightly downhill, and already wind starts picking up. Wind going to left, went with 5 iron, and wind yanked it onto left side fringe. Good shot, and a great chip onto fast green (all fast), and just made putt: PAR

4: par 5, 517 yards. Dogleg right hole, with carry over water. Yet hit great fade onto fairway, and then hit great 4 iron approach that had to be precise with bunkers and water around. PW pitch, though, needed to roll after first hill on green, and didn't. Led to very tough putt, and even with GIR, it was a 3-putt: bogey

5: par 3, 149 yards: tougher par 3 than usual becuse hazard is right in front of green, so have to be precise. With wind and slightly downhill, opted for PW, and hit back fringe. Tough downhill putt, and example of me not adjusting to greens yet, as it went well past cup. Led to 3-putt, almost four: bogey

6: par 4, 439 yards. Dogleg right, yet hit drive perfect. Unlucky, though, as it didn't get out of rough. Led to tough 6 iron shot and it was short. Tough one-putt for par, which ultimately led to 5: bogey

7: par 5. 567 yards (HDCP #1). Big hole, wind yanking shots to right, not easy. Hit drive into vineyard, so there's one penalty stroke. Then hit good 4 iron lay up, but went into hazard right in front of green, so it was hit too well. After another penalty stroke, had to carry this hazared uphill, and it rough right next to green. Chip and two putt led to overkill 8: double bogey

8: par 3, 170 yards. Needed a rebound, and hole was playing much smaller with forward teebox placement, wind, and downhill. Instead of usually using a 7 iron on 170 hole, I used PW and hit green with 12-15 foot putt left. Just missed birdie, but confirmed the 3: PAR

9: par 5, 527 yards. Basically straight out hole, yet wind will interfere with everything at this course. Hit drive down left side onto fairway, then hit outstanding 4 iron approach that had to have gone over 210 yards, rolled 20 yards away from green. Hit good PW approach shot onto green, with another decent birdie opportunity, but settled for 5: PAR

10: par 5, 510 yards (HDCP #2). Dogleg left, and just hit drive right down the middle. Went 295 yards, probably best of day, and was left with 215 left to green. Decided to go for it with 5 wood, and it hit the back fringe. Great shot with excellent chance for birdie. However, first putt went past the hole, but 7-10 foot putt for birdie missed: PAR

Front 9 score: 43, GIR: 4/9. Fairways hit: 2/6

11: par 4, 389 yards. Needed to keep momemtum going, and instead hit drive into left side vineyard. Disappointing, but hit next shot onto green. Two putt this time, though, meant a 5: bogey

12: par 3, 171 yards. Tough and narrow hole with wind going to left. Opted for 5 iron again and wind just yanked shot into left woods. Disappointed again, and ended up chipping and two-putting: double bogey

13: par 4, 390 yards. Straight out with wind, and hit drive almost onto fairway, but in left side rough. PW shot hit green even though I took a divot. Poor putting on green, however, led to three putt. Example of me never really adjusting to fast greens: bogey

14: par 3, 169 yards. Very downhill hole, but have to carry vineyard. Couldn't play club down because wind got very heavy, and I even should have played club up. Hit 7 iron just over vineyards into rough in front of green. Then hit PW approach just onto green, not good shot. Hit putt hard just over hole, rewarded: 3/4

15: par 5, 542 yards. Hit drive onto fairway, but approach shots hit poorly. Ended up hitting green in four and then three-putting again: double bogey (6/7) (Don't remember very well)

16: par 3, 163 yards. Another downhill hole, yet narrow and wind in face. HIt 7 iron just onto right side rough in between green and bunker. Hit chip right next to hole after botched first try: 3/4

17: par 4, 421 yards. Slight dogleg left, hit drive too far to left and luckily found it. Then hit PW onto green. Tough, hilly putt made it hard, but ended up two-putting: PAR

18: par 5, 462 yards. Straight out, yet creek 275 yards out there. Hit drive into trees on right side and couldn't find it, so took penalty stroke. Then hit 4 iron onto back fringe, so actually lied 3 with the penalty. Long two-putt, but was able to get it done: PAR

Back 9 score: 41 (**), GIR: 4/9, Fairways hit: 2/6

Final Thoughts: Played an alright round, this was the first time I had ever played this course. I liked it enough to favorite it, as the uniqueness of the vineyards that come into play interested me. Something that I will need to adjust to next time is the wind and the faster greens. If I had just adjusted to the greens at least, my score would have been a little bit better and less stressful to deal with. Again, did not hit a lot of fairways, but it didn't actually hurt me that much. Again didn't use 3 wood, which needs to be utilized at some point. Will see when I meet this course again. Next: Foxtail North in the next week or so.

UPDATE: Actually playing Sharp Park in Pacifica on Thursday, then Foxtail North on Monday in Rohnert Park.

5/30/10: Peacock Gap
Sunday May 30, 2010 10:10pm

May 30, 2010: Peacock Gap, teetime: 10:01, teebox: competitive (back), final score: 82

Front 9: par 36, 3127 yards. Back 9: par 35, 2974 yards

                                                                                                  Hole-by-Hole Recap

1: par 4, 404 yards. Dogleg left, so hit drive intentionally to left and carried bunker successfully. PW (pitching wedge) approach shot, slightly pulled but onto left side of green. Midlength putt, ended up bargaining for a two-putt: PAR

2: par 4, 393 yards (#1 HDCP hole). Even though fairway widens out to left, tried to hit drive straight and ended up going into right side rough right next to fairway bunker. Decided to use PW for approach with wind slightly helping, and ended up pulling it again. Went behind and left from the green, so used PW to get onto green. Had short putt, but ended up pulling it: bogey

3: par 3, 158 yards. Uphill hole, decided to use 6 iron when I easily could have used 7 iron with middle pin. Anyways, hit great shot about 10 feet away from hole. Just shaved right side of cup, so settled for a 3: PAR

4: par 5, 501 yards. Wanted drive to fade, but went too far to right and was in right side of rough. Needed to carry tree in front of me, so used 5 iron instead of 4 or 3 iron, and it hit a lone branch, but still went a good length onto left side of fairway. With less than 100 yards left, decided to use SW (sand wedge), but took big divot and it only hit front of green when I wanted it to hit the back where the pin was. Very long putt remaining, first attempt too short, second attempt too long: bogey

5: par 4, 381 yards. Dogleg left, and has always proved to be nemesis. Remained nemesis after today. Just decided to try hitting drive straight out, and it just went onto the right side of rough. Actually wasn't bad shot, buts it's always the approach that screws me up. Even played club up (8 iron from 155 yards), and it still didn't work. Bunker struggles and poor putting lead to ugly hole: double bogey/Future adjustment: 3 wood off tee

6: par 3, 171 yards. Straight out, yet over water. Green very dangerous, as it slopes drastically from the back to the front going down. Front pin nevertheless, and wind slightly helping, so went with 7 iron. Needed rebound, and shot ended up 12-15 feet away from hole. Downill putt still, and hit it lightly while reading break correctly, and it just went into the hole: BIRDIE

7: par 4, 287 yards. Short hole, and even slightly downhill. Green very uncharacteristic, as there is a gulley in the middle, while it is level on the left and right. Have to see it to believe it. Would usually attempt to drive green, but with slow group ahead, just decided to speed things up and hit 5 wood. Hit shot left and right next to cart path. Had little over 100 yards left, so took relief and hit PW approach to front fringe. Was blind from pin from where shot was, but knew where pin was anyways. Hit strong putt 7-10 feet past cup, but missed small and easy putt: bogey

8: par 5, 472 yards. Short hole, and also just straight out. Hazards have little impact on this hole. Hit drive straight, and then had 205 left. Went with 4 iron and it hit the green, but rolled off to the right. Decided to use PW to get on green, and ended up hitting the pin. Ball stayed a foot away from the cup: BIRDIE

9: par 4, 348 yards. Dogleg right, went with 5 wood. Tried to carry dogleg, but failed miserably. Had to even lay up to green. Then hit SW to back fringe, but still had 20 foot putt for par. Went past the cup 5 feet, which led to a score of 5: bogey

Front 9 score: 40, GIR (greens in regulation): 5/9, Fairways hit: 2/7

10: par 3, 131 yards. Downhill hole, ranked easiest as well. PW tee shot, pulled slightly, but hit green and rolled toward front pin placement. Downhill putt, missed to left, led to score of 3: PAR

11: par 4, 386 yards (#2 HDCP hole). Hole may seem short, but fairway moves right and then left. Fairway bunker takes up space on left, so drive needs to be precise. I wasn't, as drive hit top of bunker and rolled into rough (lucky). Awkward stance with 175 left, went with 6 iron with strange green and back pin. Shot landed on back of green, but rolled off and was forced to chip. Tried SW, but didn't roll much after contact with green. 10 foot putt remained with break right to left, and made it: PAR

12: par 5, 530 yards. Somewhat dogleg right, longest hole on course. Drive went good distance, just got away from fairway bunker. Took big divot on 4 iron lay up, and it only went 160 yards. PW approach became longer then, and unwanted fade led it to being on front and right side of green when pin was back left. Long putt, first attempt good, but 7 foot putt remaining for par missed: bogey

13: par 3, 190 yards. longest par 3 on course. 5 iron shot hit very well, hit left side and rolled toward front pin placement. 7-10 foot downhill putt remained, and didn't read break correctly, so just missed: PAR

14: par 5, 484 yards. simple par 3, but "funnel" green makes it interesting. Green funnels in middle with it being level on left and right. Approaching, though, is not hard. Yet this is where slump begins for me. Hit drive into right side trees and must have landed in water. Took penalty, and then tried to lay up with 3 iron, and hit in the water again. Played rest of hole well, but too late: double bogey

15: par 4, 356 yards. straight out hole, but has hills in middle of fairway. Only went with 4 iron off tee because I have had success in past doing so. Cost me, though, as I hit it pretty short. Had 185 yards remaining, and tried to hit best 6 iron as I could. Decent wind in my face caused it to be just short, as shot was hit pure, but distance asked for too much. PW approach to green from 15 yards away hits pin again, but rolls 10 feet away. Then missed putt for par: bogey/Future adjustment: 3 wood off tee

16: par 3, 148 yards. Straight, yet over water again. Should hit 9 iron, but back pin led me to use 8 iron. Pulled it slightly, and I thought it was off the green. Turns out it was on the left edge of the green, avoiding even the fringe. Long putt, though, and didn't read break correctly. Missed 5-7 foot putt for par, very disappointing: bogey

17: par 4, 320 yards. Short hole, but still a bit tough. Fairway bunker takes up lots of space, and only 100 yards separates it from small water hazard in front of green. Space to right on fairway, but trees could get into way as well. Hole still ranked #16 HDCP hole. Anyways, pulled 5 wood into other fairway, then had tough approach due to other set of trees. Hit PW as precisely as I could, but it rolled to the edge of the cart path behind the green. Took relief, and then chipped it poorly, as it barely made the green. Two-putt left me with 5: bogey/Future adjustment: 4 iron off tee

18: par 4, 429 yards: longest par 4 on course, slight dogleg right, and big fairway bunker uncharacteristically in middle of fairway. Drive hovers near water hazard on right for a little while, but it landed and bounced only into the right side rough. Green has many weird hills on it, and with back pin, I had to be precise. Decided to go with 7 iron from 160 yards, just to be safe, and I hit it off to the right near some smaller trees. Very disappointed, had to do really precise pitch, and it almost was good. Had 15-20 foot for par, but went past the hole: bogey

Back 9 score: 42, GIR: 4/9, Fairways hit: 2/6

Final Results: 82, GIR: 9/18, Fairways hit: 4/13

Final Thoughts: Played an alright round, with 50% GIR and mixture of pars and birdies. Lack of execution after #13 cost me a chance to break 80, which I really could have done. Only hitting 4 fairways out of 13 probably contributed to that, but plenty of positives to round as well. Should have utilized 3 wood at some point in this round, as it wasn't used at all, which is uncharacteristic of me. Some adjustments will be made for the next time at Peacock, whenever that is. Next: tomorrow at Chardonnay Golf Club in Napa.
