More about Archie Merwin

I started as a kid playing with my Dad and brother. My Dad taught me only one thing: "don't look up." It wasn't enough and I swung from that point on with a baseball type swing using my body. As a kid I was lucky to make good contact so the other problems didn't show up.

As a young adult I began playing again infrequently but by "baseball swing" sliced every ball to the right. I couldn't fix it. I took lessons when in my forties but it took me three teachers before I found one who gave me the kind of advice that began to correct the slice. I was taught to bring the swing closer into my body, and swing out from in to out so that the club wound up to the right of the target as it went by. But turning the arms straight over rather than bending the elbows at the end . . . . that brought the club face square at impact and the ball went straight with some draw to it. But doing that consistently has been a challenge. Old habits are hard to give up. The other habit that was and is hard to shed is using my upper body in the swing--shifting it forward (as baseball players do). To spin right to left without shifting the upper body forward makes all the difference. Also swinging 80 percent gets more distance oddly enough.

Now I often pull the ball to the left. That requires an effort to swing with the right shoulder lower than the left. That, too, is hard to learn. It's a very hard game.
