More about Darren Weber

I started to play at about 8 years old, with borrowed clubs from my grandfather. I played on a small country course in Lock, South Australia. The course had black sand scrapes for greens - they hold an approach shot very well, depending on how deep the sand is, and they need to be scraped and smoothed along the line of the putt.

From about 1982-1985, I played a few times each week as a junior member of the North Haven Golf Course of Outer Harbour, South Australia. It's a tidy 9-hole course in a sandy area with a small social club. My handicap slowly came down to 8 over a few years. I made it into the A-grade club competitions on Saturdays and played in the A-grade pennant competitions against other clubs on Sundays. I was a runner-up in the junior club championship one year.

In about 1985-1987, I was a junior member of the Grange Golf Club of South Australia. This is a championship layout of two beautiful 18-hole courses in the sand belt area of Adelaide, South Australia. I preferred to play the older West course, simply to enjoy the established tree-lined layout. The courses had perfectly flat tees, with spectacular views from the tee. These courses maintain perfect lush fairways and immaculate greens that were soft on the approach shot and even, speedy and true to the putter. The bunkers were gorgeous fluffy, white sandpits. It was both a joy and a challenge to play these courses. I maintained a handicap of about 10 at this club.

I competed in a couple of seasons for the South Australian junior Vardon trophy (about 1985-1987; see Vardon details at http://www.golfsa.com.au/default.aspx?s=vardon-landing). This was a small tour of premier golf courses around Adelaide, South Australia, including several courses that often host the South Australian Open (Grange, Royal Adelaide, Kooyonga, Blackwood, Glenelg, Tea Tree Gully, Thaxted Park). We played 36 holes in one day at each course in a schedule that spanned the summer months.

My golf has been sporadic and sparse since I started college. I usually play simply for enjoyment these days. I now live and work in the San Francisco bay-area. I've played at a few courses, including Harding Park, Presidio, San Geronimo, StoneTree, and Indian Valley.
