I love the game and play by the rules. I have been playing for over 35 years, so I get a little serious with my own game, but realize others aren't serious most of the time and don't let what they are doing on the course affect what I am doing. I like to play all over the place and like the course conditions to be better than average.

No frills proshop but the guys working the counter this morning were awesome, very friendly. Tried to get us to buy the JC card, but it's difficult for me to justify as most of the courses are an hour+ to the north of me. It is a good value, though. We were charged $79 to ride. I'd say it's still a little overpriced for the conditions but work continues to get done and they're trying very hard to bring this course back to its luster. White tees were fairly level, but coverage was not good. Lots of dirt and different mixes of grass/weeds/clover. Not a huge deal breaker, but just made you take some extra time to look for a good stance. Fairways are showing some signs of life in most proper landing areas, but tons of horrible areas, as well. We played the ball down, but I highly recommend lift clean and place in the fairways right now. Rough was a similar situation as the fairways. Showing some signs of promise, but I'd say over half the rough is dirt/weeds/clover. Mixed bag of what kind of lie you might get. It could be anywere from a perfect lie to absolutely deplorable. I didn't find any bunkers, but they looked ok. A few of them looked wet and had some standing water from sprinklers, but most of the sand looked fluffy and fairly new. Greens are still healing from aeration a couple weeks ago. Very bumpy and shaggy on the front. Super slow!!! Pretty frustrating on the front nine for sure. But they got better as you played through the back nine. 16, 17 and 18 greens were actually pretty good, on the verge of being very good. This will be a true test if all the work on the course will pay off. These greens should all be in great shape in another 3-4 weeks. I will be anxious to get back out there next month to see. POP right at 4hrs. Marshall doing a great job keeping pace going. I've always loved this course, played Eagle Crest before any homes were even built. It's just a super fun layout. No parallel fairways, elevation changes, water features, etc. It's got great bones, now let's see if JC Resorts can bring it back. Easy recommend. » Close Played yesterday, Saturday, 3pm teetime, $38 to walk with my buddy's JC resort rate. POP was 3.5hrs, didn't feel rushed and didn;t feel slow, perfect pace with a little wait in at the turn, played East-South nines. The north was closed for aeration and they keep two nines open. Conditions were average to slightly above average for everything.
Guy in the proshop was awesome!! Very friendly and just a pleasure checking in. Starter was great, too.
Teeboxes were fairly level with quite a bit of divot damage and bare spots, but not a huge problem finding a decent area after searching for a few seconds. They're pretty small and narrow.
Fairways were soggy but had good coverage. A little shaggy, but not a huge deal.
Sandtraps were 50/50, some were great and others were GUR, super wet and unraked. I found one greenside bunker and it was ok, but the wife had to toss hers out a couple times for unplayable wet compact sand.
Greens were all ok. They were very soft and held shots well, but they were bumpy and there was too many unrepaired pitch marks because of the softness.
Rough was fairly lush and penal.
It's a good course to walk with the wives every once in a while, but I wouldn't place it in regular rotation. Fun community and good for the retirees out there. Challenging walk with the hills and a lot of par 3's play quite long. You'll use just about every club in your bag. It's a decent value, but not going to provide any wow factor. For sure recommend if you've never played it but I'm in no hurry to go back unless my wife demands it. » Close Got done with work early yesterday, Monday, Oct 6 and went out to Balboa and put my name on the wait list at 1:30 as a single. Proshop got me out in about 20 mins, tee off at 1:50. POP was quite nice at 4hrs 15mins. Only one group waiting on number 6, which is a miracle. We waited a little bit on about half the other tees, but things moved pretty well. $36 to walk as a resident is well worth it.
The course is still recovering from quite a bit of work. The greens were very bumpy from recent aeration and late in the day footprints, but they held shot well and were on the faster side. These greens should be good to great in a few more weeks, especially if they can keep the speed up.
The tees were fairly level for the most part and had good to great coverage, no complaints.
Fairways are like the greens. Definitely a work in progress with some bare spots, wet spots, and some GUR. In a few weeks, though, these fairways should be really good. They showed a lot of moments of brilliance and promise.
Rough wasn't too penal except for the areas around the greens. Seems like the Bermuda grass isn't going dormant (maybe because the weather has been so nice and warm) and it's still very healthy. Balls around the greens will nestle down in the Bermuda rough making chipping a little more challenging.
I found one greenside bunker and it was great. Nice new fluffy sand.
No frills customer service, no bev. cart. Everyone in the proshop was just great. Thanks for working me in. Looking forward to getting back out here in a few more weeks when it should be in great shape. » Close Played Saturday, Sept 20, shotgun 8am tourney with SD Golf group, north vs. south of I-8 match play event. Super fun and great group of people. » More Played Saturday, Sept 20, shotgun 8am tourney with SD Golf group, north vs. south of I-8 match play event. Super fun and great group of people. There was another shotgun scramble tourney in front of us, so it was very slow. 5.5hrs POP. Ugh. All the people in our tourney play super fast and it was a 1 on 1 match play event for us, so we were even that much faster. The POP definitely got the best of me and I lost my match to a very formidable opponent, Will from Poway is a great golfer and truly a blast to have our match. Course conditions are just average all around. Nothing great but nothing in bad shape. $130 price was fair, we got a cool hat and a little goody bag. And I had CTP on #5 for a $25 payback, so that was nice. White tees were just fine, no complaints. Greens held shots well, but seemed to be bumpy and nobody could make any putts. Found one bunker and it was good. Rough was not too penal. Fairways were the worst part, especially #4, it was pretty much all GUR on that hole. It's a no frills course in my opinion. I never get super excited to play here but it's convenient. Medium recommend, lol. » Close Played Sunday, Sept 14, 7:30am teetime, $108 to walk (a little pricey, but seems like everywhere is expensive these days, especially on the weekends).... » MorePlayed Sunday, Sept 14, 7:30am teetime, $108 to walk (a little pricey, but seems like everywhere is expensive these days, especially on the weekends). POP was great, 4hrs, never waited one bit. A threesome that went off at 6:30am was finished 18 as we were making the turn, they flew.
Course is in overall good to very good shape. Teeboxes were narrow, but level with pretty good coverage. Fairways were very nice, although, the course gets a lot of walkers, so there's some unfilled divots. I found one divot, but was able to make good contact with my full pitching wedge, so it wasn't too bad. Rough wasn't too thick and it's pretty sparse in between the trees, no complaints. Found two bunkers and they were just fine, good sand underneath, but a little damp and compact. One bunker I saw had coyote tracks all through it, must have been after the morning crew. Greens were good for the most part, but not worth the $108 green fee. They were quite bumpy, but held shots very well. They will be doing some major aerating coming up in a couple of weeks, so beware. I don't hit balls on the range, but apparently it is still closed. Customer service was decent. The guy in the proshop wasn't too nice when I explained to him that I was trying to use my $50 "goplaygolf" gift card. After doing a little research, he saw that the company contacted the course on Friday to redeem my card, so it ended up going through, but he wasn't thrilled about it. I definitely recommend these courses. I like the Oak better than Willow, personally. There are some very narrow fairways and the back nine is super sweet in my opinion. » Close
