RDDenn and golferic420 completed their match today at Lakewood. We played the blues (some of the tees were all the back on the rocks = black), Eric received 7 strokes.

Hole 1 - Stroke hole. Both players hit good drives down the middle. Eric hit his approach pin high on right fringe, about 15 feet away. Bob hit his approach right of the right greenside bunker, hit his third to the middle of the green, 25 feet downhill. Eric put his putt 3 feet below the hole. Bob's putt rolled to the same spot and he conceded the hole. Eric 1up.

Hole 2 - Stroke hole. Both players hit good drives, Eric in the middle and Bob on right fairway. Both players strategically put their approaches in the right greenside bunker. Eric hit the better sand shot, about 10' past the hole. Bob had a 20' downhill putt that ended up a tap-in bogey. Eric two putted for the net par. Eric 2up.

Hole 3 - Both players hit good shots to the par three hole that was playing at the rock (black tee) to a back right pin position. 181 yards. Two putt pars. Eric 2up.

Hole 4 - Eric hit a drive into the left trees, Bob hit his into the right trees. Eric hit a nice punch to 70 yards or so, put his approach on the back of the green, and had a nice two putt bogey. Bob spent more time in the trees than was good for his score and missed a six foot bogey putt. Eric 3up.

Hole 5 - The par three was playing 222 yards. Two bogeys later, Eric still 3up.

Hole 6 - Stroke hole, #1 handicap. Eric hit his drive through the fairway into rough, Bob hit his over the corner into the middle. Eric hit trees but was able to get on the green in three, two putt bogey. Bob narrowly missed his birdie, so a push. Eric 3up.

Hole 7 - Par 5. Bob hit a decent drive to the left fairway just past the left fairway bunker. Eric hit his drive in the right rough, had tree trouble and ended up conceding the hole. Eric 2up.

Hole 8- Both players hit decent drives, Eric in the right rough and Bob in the middle. Eric two putted from the right fringe and Bob two putted from 20'. Eric 2up.

Hole 9 - Stroke hole, par 5. Eric faded his drive into the right trees. Bob hit his in right rough but no trees. Eric hit a great iron to 80 yards. Bob hit into the right rough under a tree, which he hit on his third shot to plug in the front right bunker. Eric stuck his third about 20' from hole. Bob hit his bunker shot to the #3 tee box behind the green, did not hole the impossible return shot and conceded. Eric 3up at the turn.

Hole 10 - Stroke hole. Bob hit his drive to the left fairway about 125 out. Eric found the left water (twice - don't ask). Conceded - Eric 2up.

Hole 11 - Both players hit poor tee shots into the right trees. Bob's punch somehow got through to in front of the green. Eric had tree trouble and ended up doubling the hole. Bob's chip went to two feet and was conceded. Eric 1up.

Hole 12 - Another 220 yard par three??? Bob hit to just in front of the green to the right. Eric's ball apparently found the water on the left although we thought it was safe. Eric ended up conceding. All square.

Hole 13 - Stroke hole. Bob hit a good drive to the left fairway 125 yards out. Eric faded into the left trees and had a problem with the fence. Conceded Bob's par. Bob 1up.

Hole 14 - Par 5. Bob hit a drive to left fairway. Eric found the left trees. Bob won the hole with a two putt par. Bob 2up.

Hole 15 - The threesome we were playing with started to fade (or were tired of us) and suggested we go on ahead of them. Bob hit a pop up into the right fairway bunker. Eric hooked his drive into the right trees. Eric hit a great hook punch that unfortunately hit a tree. Bob hit his second into the right trees, third onto the green, two putt bogey to win the hole. Bob 3up, Eric dormie.

Hole 16 - Bob hit his drive to the left rough about 125 yards out. Eric topped his drive and ended up conceding the hole. RDDenn wins 4 and 2.

Eric unfortunately lost his magic with his driver. He was smoking hot for most of the front 9 while I was having trouble finding a rhythm. His driver put him in places he could not recover from on the back 9. Good company on a fairly slow and pretty hot day on the course.

Nickesquire v. TMoney88. We played the Black/White combo tees @ La Quinta Mountain.

Nick’s 10 handicap equated to a course handicap of 12, Tom’s 15 handicap equated to a course handicap of 18, so TMoney88 was getting 3 strokes per side.

*Stroke holes

Hole 1 Par 4. Both hit good drives just off the fairway and both were just in front of the green in 2. Neither got it up/down. AS

*Hole 2 Par 3. Both hit long irons just right of the green Nick got it up/down, Tom did not. AS

Hole 3 Par 4. Both hit decent drives in the fairway. Nick was just short, Tom was just long in 2. Tom got it up/down, Nick did not. Tom 1 up

Hole 4 Par 5. Both hit decent drives just off the fairway. Tom hit an aggressive wood over the mountain into the waste bunker in 2. Nick hit an aggressive 2 iron that was too low and bounced off the rocks into the fairway, then was just long in 3 and got it up/down for a par. Tom was advancing the ball down the waste bunker and failed to get it up/down for par. AS

Hole 5 Par 3. Both hit irons short right. Nick chipped on, Tom was long in 2 and on in 3. Both 2 putted from there. Nick 1 up

*Hole 6 Par 4. Turnabout is fair play, this time it was Tom hitting one off the rocks into the fairway. Nick hit a nice drive in the fairway. Tom hit his 2nd shot in the water, then went right of the green into the deep stuff and conceded the hole after Nick was on the back apron in 2. Nick 2 up

Hole 7 Par 5. Nick drove it in the left rough and was just long left in 2 after a good 3W approach. Tom hit several in the deep stuff and conceded the hole with Nick on the fringe in 3. Nick 3 up

Hole 8 Par 4. Both hit good drives in the fairway. Tom approach shot left and he did not get it up/down. Nick on the green and 2 putt par. Nick 4 up

*Hole 9 Par 4. Nick hit his first really poor shot and hooked a drive that should have went in the lake… but it caromed off the fence guarding the lake from the cart path into the fairway. Tom hit the fairway then a nice long iron on the green. Nick in the green side bunker in 2, then blasts out just over the green in 3. Tom farther away charges his birdie putt and runs it 10’ past. You have a pretty good idea it IS your day when you chip in for a par after your tee shot should have went in the lake. Tom ends up 3 putting for a 5 and we halve the hole with his stroke. Nick 4 up.

Hole 10 Par 4. Nick hit a nice drive just through the fairway, short iron within 15’ and made the birdie putt. Tom was just off the green in 2 and failed to get it up/down, Nick 5 up.

Hole 11 Par 4. Nick hit a drive through the fairway long, short iron within 15’ and made the birdie putt. Tom was in the fairway, short left in 2 and on in 3. Nick 6 up

Hole 12 Par 4. Nick hit a long drive in the left rough and was just over the green in 2. Tom’s drive was in the fairway, iron well right, just over in 3, chips on in 4 and makes a 6. Nick hit a nice chip to 8’, then ran his downhill par putt 6’ by the hole and missed the comebacker for a 6 to halve the hole. Nick 6 up, Dormie.

Hole 13 Par 3. Nick was pin high left of the green, Tom was short left in 1. Tom had a nasty lie and did well to get it on the green a long way from the hole. Tom lagged up near the hole in 3. Nick chipped to 4’ and made the putt to close out the match 7 and 5.

Tom had an off day and that was the best I have ever played in a GK Cup match. Tom never made it to his 3 stroke holes on the back, holes 14/15 & 17.

Thanks for the match Bob. Even though I melted down on the back, still had a great time. I wish I could have kept it going, and kept it competitive. Good luck in your next match!

QUOTED  Had a great time playing with Sal on a great day at Torrey!

Matt, thanks for another great match and I am glad we were able to get out to Torrey! This match goes to show you how well the handicap system actually works when a guy like me can stay in it pretty much all day in spite of the fact a golf-machine like Matt can shoot 2 under and we took the match all the way to 18! Until next Cup

QUOTED  Nope! Sorry, NOT dormie.

I don't get it.

Isn't dormie when one player is the same number of points ahead as there are holes still to play?

What am I missing?

Wait. I found this: https://www.thoughtco.com/what-does-dormie-mean-1560826

However, from that article: "Purists will say no: Dormie should not be used unless halves are in use because dormie implies the leading golfer can't lose the match.

But that battle was lost a long time ago. Any time one golfer takes a lead over another golfer that equals the number of scheduled holes remaining—that's dormie, at least in the way modern golf broadcasters and fans use the term."

You can only be "dormie" if you are willing to accept a tie as the final result of the match - as in the Ryder Cup. Each player there can then get a 1/2 point if the 18-hole match ends in a tie. Those golf commentators are usually referring to a match of that type.

In the GK Cup 12 bracket, there are no halves, so you can't be dormie, as a final winner/loser must be identified.

Breathing.
