If you saw my review I was a little under-whelmed by the changes at Torrey North, so I thought I would start this thread so the changes might be discussed. Well at least me and Mike can debate or anyone else that is interested . . . at the least I can get it off my chest?

In my review I mentioned the strange green contours but forgot to mention the many trees that are now gone, some Torrey Pines. In particular approaching the now 13th with no bunkers and no trees in the background or right side the hole lacked definition, it just sat out there looking out of place. I couldn't decide if it looked European (possible slightly from a links set-up?), Australian (I don't know why a barren landscape made me think that way?), or just from Mars?

It was a wet rainy day and my flip phone takes horrible pictures. It looks the same basically except the trees removed and the green complexes which are now bumpy is how I would describe them. The putting surfaces are perfect and roll true but with all the bumps, dips and strange tiers a 10' putt could have multiple breaks, especially once these greens, "settle in".

My guess is that the whole revamp was to make it harder for the pros? When and if they get these greens to the speed they can, and usually do for tournament time, I predict a lot of crying and moaning. I see a couple places where missed putts may end up yards off of the green surfaces and defensive putting may become the norm . . . and of course if they then "soften them up" the pros will once again have a field day.

Apparently there is a gag order on Torrey North discussion amongst Men's club members.

Playing North tomorrow 2/12/17, gotta give it another chance, we'll see if a bit drier conditions change my attitude . . . I think I'll still miss the trees!

Played Friday morning and was in a fog bank the entire round except for eight and nine. They have cut the rough down and they applied a light layer of sand on all greens.

More power to ya donburnette05! I feel about the same about the greens, maybe, maybe if they ever soften up . . . they do roll fairly true as I have made some bombs there. "tried too hard and just tricked it up." hits the nail pretty squarely. I too miss the old course and think switching the nines was stupid. One use to be able to ease into the round for the first 3 holes, not anymore, now it's 3 of the toughest par 4's with the toughest par 3 mixed in to start! The placement of the cart path turn around between 15 and 16 is almost 100 yards from the tee box? I will, and have been getting use to it, but all they have done is make North different than South esthetically and on the green surfaces, the rest is hogwash . . . again "much ado about nothing"!

. . . but of course it is still Torrey, one of the best overall tracks in SoCal!
