Now that a lot of courses are shut down I am tempted to drive farther to play a nice course that is open rather than play a mediocre course that may or may not be open when I show up.

This got me thinking how far would you normally drive for golf?

I personally during normal times will drive up to two hours to play. Now that Gas prices are creeping towards 1.99 a gallon in SoCal so I would probably drive further due to the fact its cheap. Yes I will be gone from sunrise to sunset but its worth it. For example I am going to be playing in Las Vegas this weekend for a short turn around trip. Gas will cost me $50 round trip plus $40 for the course using club corp. This is much better than playing anywhere around here.

I drove from Playa del Rey to Borrego Springs for a Rams Hill outing in one day and back ... that may be my threshold without an overnighter planned.

On a regular basis, a forty mile drive is what I've done for years.

On a short day trip 150-200 miles.
More so for Palm Springs area rather than the central coast and San Diego. But those round trips can be tough especially if more than a round will be done.

I think you need to drive to Arizona now if you want to tee it up on some amazing coursed. Not sure how long they will be open although. When they canceled spring training and COVID-19 hit I'm guessing the rates are pretty fantastic out there now with little play. Its a long haul although. 6 hour drive from SoCal.

I flew to Northern Ireland for a One minute and 38 second race!

Now days, I have a rule, every hour in the car/plane equals one night stay.

In addition to that, the further I drive the nicer the course has to be. I don't mind driving a bit (2-3 hours) if it's to meet good friends (or Rob) AND it's a nice course.

Gas is cheap, the roads are empty, flights are empty and everything is closed . . . even the beaches! Is this what purgatory is like?

"You can't get they'ahh from heeeah...." (said with a heavy Northern Maine accent) AYUH.

and add; well when ya do get theyahh won't be anythang open. Kind of like a wicked nor'easta in Decemba.

This month day trip to The course at Wente Vineyards (Sacramento to Livermore) Left at 5am for a 8:30 tee time five hour tournament round. Ten hours there and a stop for a bite to eat in Benica. 12 hour day and 250+ miles of driving. Don't do that on a routine basis.

GK event at Ridge Creek 420 miles plus the golf. Day trip last year. That's pushing it for day trip distance. Long run for solo.

GK Cup match at Carmel Valley Ranch February. Drove 226 miles there played match with Alex. Such nice weather drove Big Sur that afternoon to San Simeon camped drove back to Granite Bay next day. About 650 mile trip total. And totally worth it!

Keep the gas cheap and I will personally help the golf economy locally as well as longer range to get back going.

In my golf dreams (some are strange) I'm trying to golf but for one reason or another I can never swing (is this my blanket?) or impossible obstacles in my way. Never playing but trying to. That's what purgatory is?!

Gary ... me too. We can still play in Phoenix, but I do not want to chance it right now.
