No, this is not a list to beat up on poorly conditioned courses. On occasion, and when conditions permit, I like to bring my dog along with me when I play golf.

Given that many consider golf a niche sport, wanting to bring your dog along, and further limiting it to having a dog that is appropriately behaved on a course, makes the target group for this list a niche within a niche within a niche. I get that.

But I'm always looking for courses that allow the dog option and, along with all the other good information the GK shares, if there is going to be a list for this where better than here?

As suggested above, and as a point of etiquette, this is intended for people whose dog is course-friendly. Obviously, the owner is poised to completely clean up after his companion, but assumes the dog itself is in control via command or leash, and not a nuisance via barking, hyper behavior, etc.

I'm curious as to what discussion will arise from this, but if you've found a dog friendly course, I'd like to know about it.

Here is my short list:

- River Course at Alisal. On a getaway with my wife over Thanksgiving weekend, the dog and I played while the wife caught up with reading and napping. I went in earlier in the day so they could see the dog and confirm it would be acceptable and it was cool. In addition to the obvious request to clean up after the dog, they asked to keep him off the greens.

- Buena Vista (Taft). Played here twice, once going to and then on the return from the Bay Areas. Called ahead to check the first time and it was no problem.

- River Ridge. One of my favorite courses and very dog friendly. Greenskeeper has a big, gentle Mastiff that is a bit of a doggy ambassador.

A few years back, with the if-you-take-him-out-then-I-didn't-see-it permission of the manager at the time, I was able to bring him out to a local LA County course I shall not name — at least until management changed. That was an anomaly since LA County regulation doesn't allow dogs, and I assume the same for the city, but this course being fairly quiet and out of the way, the manager let me do it. Me being fairly regular, he also was familiar with the dog and his behavior before I approached him with the request.

Well, I used to see some guy bring his dog out with him at Willowick, so if they are still cool with it, you can bring your dog to an actual dog track...

All kidding aside, residents walk their dogs (and cats, and iguanas, etc.) on the course at Indian Hills all the time, so I don't see how they'd say no to bringing your pup out for a round.

I'm not sure if it's policy or not but when I spent the weekend at Temecula Creek Inn a few years back, they had no problem with my girlfriend and I bringing the pooch out on the course to play the Oaks 9. It was amazing to watch her run wild and free - loved it. But she's also very well behaved and most importantly, not a loud barker, which I'm sure would definitely be a reason not to bring a dog. But I would call first to make sure it wasn't an anomaly.

Goat Hill Park is definitely dog friendly.

There are a couple coyotes and a REALLY big hawk that call the place home so if you have a small dog, keep your head on a swivel.

Chris, your question is kind of hanging out there and not sure where it's aimed. Please clarify.

And as far as the comment about coyotes, very definitely a consideration. I have a small dog and frequently see coyotes on courses when golfing. Saw one catch and kill a squirrel on the 5th fairway of Encino a few years back. On one occasion the dog was out ahead of me and coyote was beelining in his direction from a couple of fairways over. I chased off the coyote easily enough. The problem was that when I went after the coyote, my dog wanted to go after him also. Fortunately, he is responsive to command, which is why I let him off leash, and calling him back wasn't a big issue.

But we have coyotes in our neighborhood, so even just on a normal walk my head is on a swivel. Part of living in many areas of LA and the West in general.

t8, may I call you t8? Well any ways, big dogs are large canines and small dogs are small canines . . . I hope that clears that up for you.
