Played 12/21. Was in good shape considering the heavy rains earlier in the week. Some of the bunker sand could use some help. Greens rolled true. One of the best values in Southern California. Love the place!

I played on 12/21. I had 3 approach shots plug in the greens! I realize there was heavy rains earlier in the week, but I played in the morning at Soule Park on the same day and played the next day at Rustic Canyon and did not have this issue. Course was playing way too soft. In addition, there is serious need of tree trimming. The 2nd and 7th holes in particular were absurd. 147 yards from the green on the right side of the fw on 7 and blocked from the green from overgrowth. Middle of the fw on 2 and a 1/3 of the green is blocked out by overgrowth. Ridiculous for place that charges what they charge.

I strongly disagree with the previous review. I play on 1/02 and the fws were playing exactly the way the architect envisioned. Firm and fast. They were playing as close to St Andrews conditions as one could hope for this side of the pond. I have rarely seen the course play better. The "thin" straw like lies require a a different approach to striking the ball, a la British links. If you want "lush" watered down fws, Tierra Rejada is just down the road.

Course is in the worst shape I have ever seen it. Fairways were spotty and tee boxes were terrible. I normally love playing here, but it was awful to see it in this kind of condition. The greens were at least decent, but I would beware of coming here.

The course is incredible condition! Fantastic fws and the greens are night and day from a year ago. Great, great place to play. Love it! What a place!

Wanted to see this place for a while. Now, I'm not sure why. It's evident why this place can't attract members. The course is deviod of interest. The land was very well suited for a very interesting course, but the chance was blown. The par 5's all have forced carries in front of the greens, with variations of the theme with no real risk reward options to make off the tees on the non par 3 holes. The par 3's themsleves as a collection are ho hum. There seems to be a bit of the same type of green complex used over and over again, ie, boomerang. There is no room off the tees at all and no safe place for the lesser player to bail out. Decision making does not really come into play and the shot is dictated for you, for the most part. In addition, the course is unwalkable, a huge minus for me. The facilities themselves are very nice, with one of the nicest clubhouse's in the San Diego area. That's just not enough in my book to fork over the initiation fee, as it doesn't cover up the fact that the course is very mediocre.

Course was in very good shape. FW's were exceptionally good. The place is always a blast to play.

Played 8/22 and the course was in it's usual good shape. A few tees were being worked on and were therefore roped off at the tips, I assume in prep for the city championship(?). Some baby trees have been planted behind the 2nd tee/right side of the 11th fw. Very dumb in my opinion. They serve no purpose and when they mature will use up water in that area that will take away from the grass and add more to maint. costs. In addition, it will take away from the genreal openess of the views across the course.

Course is in the best shape I've seen in a long time. All the greens have been repaired and while they run maybe 7-8 on the stimp, are much better than they have been in a while. This layout is very solid and has only been held back by it's conditions. Hopefully this is a sign that things are changing there for the better.

mdames,

This time of year alot of the courses fw's are thin due to overseeding, thatching, etc. The grass at Rustic is not the same type as at Soule. The course is a gem due to the design change, conditions aside. They can easily be improved. A design cannot without significant cost. The course was in very good shape in early summer and that is to be expected. Not picking on you, but it amazes me how alot of golfers cannot see the forest through the trees per se. No one likes to play a course in bad shape, but I've seen much, much worse than this place and I know it's because of the time of year we are in. With the exception of Rustic, the design of Sterling Hills and Angeles National are not as good as new Soule. The conditions should be looked at completely seperately from the design. Give it another try in Spring and then decide.

The conditions have been an issue as of late. The 5th and 14th greens have been closed for repairs. It's a shame it's not in better shape as the course is a diamond in the rough with 5 or 6 great holes. A solid overall layout, just don't expect too much in terms of conditions.
