Played today 12/24. I have never seen this course in better shape. Customer service is top notch as always! Greens are really, really quick....probably a true 11, with minimal ball marks. With the coyote club membership, this place is tough to beat for Orange County golf.

Played again on Saturday 12/15. Greens are getting faster, closer to 11 now. Rest of the course is in great shape all around.

I think this place has the best grounds crew of any public course in SoCal. Basically in great shape all but 20 or so days each year, when they punch greens and aerate fairways.

Played today 12/14 on Mission/Presidio. Still cart path only. Got out in front of everyone again in the early morning (very cold), so can't really tell you about pace of play. Fairways are coming in pretty nice, no real bare spots, just a little bit shaggy still. Overall, fairways are decent. Sandtraps were decent, only went in twice today and they were consistent with each other.

This is a pretty traditional type layout. Was pretty stoked to play something more traditional after the Crossings yesterday. Bunkering is good and placed in good punitive spots. Only knock on the course would be the tee boxes...thin in spots and some semi-unlevel boxes from the blues.

GOOD NEWS = Green complexes were filthy! (in a good way). Virtually no ball marks and maybe even an eleven on stimp. Awesome greens!!! Mission has a little more dogleg trickery than Presidio, but both nines are in good shape.

I will go back again next time I am in SD. This place should be rated higher than 6+ in my opinion. Also, easy to get discounted tee times online for this course. Click4teetimes or TeetimesAmerica.

Staff was very laid back. Starter gave me no guff about going as a single and some other marshall guy gave didn't bug me at all when I turned off Mission onto Presidio nine which wasn't supposed to open for another 30 minutes. Thanks Riverwalk guys, that's the attitude that keeps people like coming back!

Not sure I would describe Crossings as last reviewer..."sweeping views, etc.." but this was a pretty nice course and I may have missed some of the views b/c I was playing pretty quick today. I will also qualify my review before I start by saying that I had pretty low expectations of this place after hearing a couple of bad things about the mediocrity of the course.

The layout has a lot of elevation changes and some really quirky routing in spots. Number twelve (i think) is just out in the middle of nowhere all by itself. The design is nothing spectacular in my opinion, there are at least a couple of courses in SoCal that feel exactly the same (Salt Creek, Arroyo Trabuco). However, if you like elevation changes, you will like this place. Not a traditional layout at all. Also, the green complex on 18 is like a miniture golf hole....undulations to the point of ridiculous.

The good parts are, the greens were in really good condition, almost impeccable. Only a few ball marks and rolled a good ten on stimp. Fairways are kind of hard pan, but they are green and not too beat up (there was a lot of patching going on in the fairways, especially on the back, but grounds crew has done an excellent job merging patches with original grass). Tee boxes were excellent, only one hole I can remember with unlevel box. Went in four traps, three of them were great and consistent with the type/depth of sand, fourth on 18 was totally different (not better, but worse).

Final positive thing to say is that the staff was super cool and this is a really nice facility (clubhouse, range, etc...). I arrived at the course this morning before pro shop opened and they made accomodations to get me out in front of the first group in the morning so I could make it to my conference in SD. Even let me hit some balls on the range before sunrise.

If you live in Carlsbad or SD, go try this course for sure b/c they give special rates to locals! If you don't live down there, try to get a twilight time. I paid $90 today and it was completely worth it! If you can play twilight and finish, this is be an awesome deal.

Played on 12/8, course is in wonderful shape. Fairways were really nice, a little softer than usual due to the rain. Greens are still a little soft also. Overall, the course is in great shape. Can't wait to go back again. Best walk in Southern California!

Played today 12/9. Course in great shape. Fairways were like butter and immaculate. Greens are getting quicker also, probably at a 10 now. Always a great place to play!

Played on 11/21. Greens are completely healed and seem to have been rolled, definitely cut. Greens are as good as I have seen them at coyote in the last six months. Still some ball marks here and there, but rolling about 9.

Course is recovered from aeration, both fairways and greens.

Played on 11/17, have not been out there in at least two years. Course was in about as good of condition as it gets. Like Cheeseburger said, this course really went down the drain a couple years ago as far as maintenance. That's why I stopped playing there. However, after reading his post, I decided to give it another shot.

Tee boxes and fairways were very, very nice. Rough was not more than a couple inches, three tops...Not really punitive. Greens were in probably as good of shape as they get out there. Rolled about an 8, but not many ball marks.

I think this course is a little overpriced and slow, however, it was in good shape. If you haven't been out there in a while because the conditions got so bad, it is probably a good time to give it another shot.

PowerFade was right on with his review. Upon reading that review, I headed out for SCGA bright and early this morning and they got me on as a single immediately.

The greens are completely perfect and beautiful! Not a ball mark in site and they are rolling 11 or 12. Tee boxes were very nice. Fairways have come back very well. They were a little shaggy today, but groundscrew was mowing them this morning.

Highly recommend SCGA right now. Staff was good as always.

Played on 11/4. Course is in great shape. Tee boxes and fairways were perfect. Greens have healed from aeration. They are still a little bit soft, compared to normal.

Disregard person who posted just before me with respect to Rustic not being worth the greens fee. That is just wrong. Rustic is one of the best deals in Southern California.

Also, this is the most distinctive public course I have found from San Diego to Santa Barbara. I drive over 90 miles to play this course and it's worth it every time. One reviewer (from Scotland) pointed out, this is not a "true" links style course, and he is probably right. However, this is the only place that I know of in Southern California that even has that feel.

Rustic Canyon is awesome and everyone should try this course at least once!

Played on 10/8. Course not in very good condition compared to what I am used to for CrossCreek. Lots of patchy areas in the fairways. The greens were much softer than usual. They still rolled about an 8, but fairly bumpy. Green on 18 is destroyed, looks like the whole thing got some sort of fungus...worse than a punched green.

Seems that the summer heat has taken a toll on the course. Maintenance crew had sprinklers going on multiple holes and would shut them down as you came to your ball to hit approach shot. Had to move my ball a few times because of the amount of water in parts of the fairway they were watering.

I would not recommend going out here for a couple weeks at the least. Or, in the alternative, until someone posts a better review on this site.

Customer service was good as always.
