Played today (04/01) and it was a great day. After a wind blown afternoon yesterday, the winds were calm for our 0730 tee time and picked up to only a 1 club wind by the back 9. My friend and I played as a two some and breezed through the course in 3.5 hours. I can't find a single thing wrong with the condition of this course. I played from the back (Cimarron Tees) which makes this course at least somewhat challenging (6,850 yards par 71). Other than that the wind is really this course's only defense.

Tee boxes are in great shape and lush.
Fairways are in great shape and lush with great lies.
The course is well manicured and the 2-4" rough frames the fairways nicely. The aprons around the greens are also well maintained and in great condition.
The greens are running medium to medium-fast but smooth as can be and nary an unfixed ball mark.

There isn't a single thin area on this course - it's all well manicured and green. Even the 17th hole's green is in good shape with only a minimal amount of coot droppings.

The only reason I didn't rate the course higher is I am stingy and rarely give out a "10" for any category unless the quality simply blows me away.

I played a twighlight round on 03/31 and the previous review is pretty spot on, I'll just throw in a couple additions. The greens were recently sanded so the greens played a little slower. And the staff informed me the courses have been getting a lot of play, which is good, except people must be having a tough time taking that divot/ball mark repair tool out of their pockets because the greens were littered with ball marks. Wind kicked up pretty good on us this afternoon, but overall, this is the best condition I've seen this course in the last couple of years.

Played 03/10 and had a 1207 tee time. LV is notorious for playing slow, so it was no surprise we got off late around 1230. Course is playing very firm. Tee boxes are in good shape but often difficult to even place a tee in the ground. Fairways are decent and very firm. Rough is almost non-existent and very patchy. The greens were a little bumpy, not always true, and running fast, but not as fast as I've seen them.

Now on to the real issue. I set a personal record today, and it wasn't a good one. This was the longest round of golf I have every played. Coming to LV you can pretty much expect a 5-hour round - but 6 hours! I am not rounding up from 5:45 hours either, this was a full 6 hours, and steady at that pace. We turned in 3 hours and it never got better. I know this is a muni but this course HAS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS ISSUE. There was a cart girl out which was nice for a Monday afternoon, but not a single marshal to be found. We waited on EVERY shot, and then some. Enough ranting. If you play LV and tee off after 7am, pencil in most of your day for being on the hill.

Played on 02-24 and 02-26 and both were morning tee times. I found the course to be in very good condition. Played the back tees and the tee boxes were good with some divot damage and were mostly level. The fairways have recovered well from prior reviews and there are only 2-3 holes with some bare spots. Rough was pretty consistent throughout the course but not overly penal. The fairways are cut short, well manicured, and are running firm and fast (at least before all this rain came through). Same can be said for the greens. The greens on this course are some of the best public course greens I have ever played on. In 36 holes, I don't recall seeing my ball bounce during a roll once. Smooth, quick, and true. They were great to play on. Also a little on the firm side prior to the rain which made holding certain shots tougher. The Classic is a good course in good condition.

Played on 11/16 and the course is in great condition. The tee boxes are flat/level for the most part with possibly only subtle undulations. The fairways are in pristine shape and the rough is in great condition and consistent at 2-3 inches. I was not in any traps but they looked to be in good shape. See the below review for more details on the sand.

The greens were very good and rolling medium-fast. There was some minor ball mark damage but they still rolled true. The 17th green protected by water had minimal coot/duck poop on it which is nice. I've seen it almost covered.

We played in A LOT of wind, the kind that blows your hat off, but the course was still enjoyable. The staff is friendly and nice. Only negative was there was no cart girl. One employee told us she called in sick and another said it was because of the wind.

Probably because of the wind but the course was not busy and we played in just under 4 hours.

Played on 9/2 and it was a beautiful day after two days of high temps and high humidity. I'll start by saying the customer service is excellent. When my threesome checked in, we did so behind a foursome of the very elderly who did not speak much English. I could hear their tee time was for 0803. Seeing how ours was at 0812 and fearing a 6 hour round, I asked if we could get out earlier. Turns out they were sold out on this labor day, but the starter still got us out ahead of that group, which probably saved us 45 minutes on our round.

Tee boxes are well covered and don't have much divot damage. The fairways are lush and have only a few burned spots, but are also pretty shaggy and not rolling out. The rough is on the short side and not penal, and the bunkers are quite decent. The greens looked nice and rolled at a little below medium pace. They were a little tricky though and their speed was very dependent on the direction of the grain.

Overall the course is in good condition for the time of year.

A series of severe thunderstorms passed through La Quinta about a week before I played, which was on 9/1. The rain was so strong it literally washed out all of the bunkers and most waste/desert areas on the course, as well as put a few of the greens underwater. For the first time in their history, SilverRock closed its gates for a few days to undergo massive repairs, and reopened with all sand and waste areas playing as Ground Under Repair.

In the upcoming days, SR is going to be closing 9 holes at a time to do more repairs prior to closing for fall overseeding, so golfers will be playing the same 9 twice. Call to verify.

As for my round, here's what I got:
I love SilverRock, it's probably my favorite course in the desert. The tees are in great condition, and the fairways are too, with some noticeable dry spots. The rough is short and adequate, and the greens are in fine shape for this time of the season and rolling a little slower than medium. A few of the bunkers that had already been repaired or that were least affected by the rain looked good, but many did not. I think I heard one of the staff members say it's going to cost in the neighborhood of $200K to repair all the bunkers.

Still a good course, hopefully it can make it back to elite soon enough.

Played on 8/31 and the course is looking good for this time of year. Played the tips and the tee boxes were mostly lush and level. The fairways were in better than average condition for courses in the area with less sun damage. Rough was lush wasn't very penal. Greens looked great and had few ball marks. They were a little shaggy and ran slow. Only knock is regarding the greenside bunkers. They are very thin and make explosion shots impossible let alone taking much sand at all with the shot. Recommended.

Played today on 08-22-13. Went off at 2pm and made good time on the front 9 but got bogged down and crawled on the back.

Tee boxes are in real good shape for an LA muni. Fairways are also in real good shape for an LA muni. Rough can be tricky. It's thick and clumpy in some areas. The greens had some foot traffic damage but that was expected for the afternoon time. The greens were also pretty decent though and rolled medium. My only complaint, as it was the last time I reviewed ole Chester, was these bunkers are terrible. They're firm and have only the thinnest top layer of dirt. Please oh please steal some sand from a preschool sand box to add some depth to these poor things. Definitely no possibility to play any explosion shots here.

Played on 08-16-13 at 830am. First time playing this course. I thought it was a real fun layout with many options off most of the tees. Good mix of long and short par 4's.

Tee boxes were in good shape. Fairways were very nice with very little sun damage. Rough is almost nonexistent here, but there is plenty of bunkering and waste/desert areas. Bunkers were decent but a little heavy. Greens were true but quite slow. No cart girl on this August Thursday was a little disappointing. It was HOT.

Played on 08-14-13. Some of the courses out in the desert have taken a beating from the high summer temps and although some damage can be seen on Firecliff, the course is holding up better than others. Tee boxes were in good shape as usual. The fairways were mostly lush with a few dry/burned spots, but if you ended up in a dry patch of grass it did not affect your lie. Rough was lush but short and not penal. My only complaint was of the greenside bunkers. I was only in one and bladed my shot when my wedge bounced off hard pack that was only about an inch from the soft top layer. Pretty disappointing. Same thing happened in another bunker to my playing partner.

I'll end this on a good note though, the greens had been aerated a couple weeks before I played and were probably 95+% healed. Compared to the slow shaggy messes some of the other local courses are displaying, Firecliff's greens were running a little faster than medium and mostly true. It was a pleasure to play on greens I rated as an "8" which is typically only a score I give for fall-spring months.

Stay, GPS, carts, and facility are always top notch.

Played Classic on 6/21 on the first day of summer and it was a great way to start it off. Tee'd off at 8am as a single and one of the marshals, Jim, got me off on #10 solo which was awesome. I really took my time and breezed through the round in 3.5 hours. Like my previous review of Firecliff, Classic is going through the same transition from rye to bermuda. So that is the only knock again on this course - the greens need a little time and work to get back to Classic standards. They are a little further behind than Firecliff's but were still very playable. Sand traps are well maintained and raked by staff prior to play, rough is lush and not penal. The fairways are in great shape with only a few thin areas. Often overlooked, but the tee boxes at Classic are the best I have ever seen, ever, anywhere. You could putt on these tee boxes the grass is so tight and well maintained. Go play.
