I have been wanting to play this course for awhile. Finally went there on May 19, 2009. I spent hours on line looking at the photographs, tips, etc. When I finally got there, I was told that only the Legends course was open, due to watering issues. I played the Legends course. I was very disappointed to see that on almost every hole, that certain of the bunkers had been filled in, and had been seeded with grass growing. On at least three holes, I had to move my ball out from the ground under repair areas, which normally would have been either fairway bunkers or greenside bunkers. What is going on? Are they too cheap to maintain the course as designed, so they are filling in the bunkers? Maybe they should just shorten up all the holes? Maybe they should eliminate the rough? The bunkers are all full of rocks, too. What is that about? Many of the greens were poorly watered, with some spots very wet, and other spots very dry. Each green was a very different experience, and I am disappointed that the PGA has allowed its brand to deteriorate. I will not play this course again, as I expected it to live up to its namesake. It was a very challenging course nonetheless, with its narrow fairways, small, undulating greens, and the absolutely insane rough, where if you missed the fairways or green, forget it, that ball was lost. I missed my approach on the third hole by less than 5 feet to the right, yet lost my ball in this impossible rough. I spent a few minutes poking at it with my club, hoping my ball would pop out. Instead, I found five other balls, but not mine. Obviously, there is a huge premium for accuracy, but in that regard, the greens should have rewarded such accuracy. In many instances, the hole placements were ridiculous. It was impossible to hold the green on some shots, and I hardly felt like this course was fair in that even when the fairway was hit, due to the sometimes poor condition and bare spots, gopher mounds, erratic watering, or what not, that being in the fairway actually made for a worse shot. Bottom line is that it seemed like the owners were cutting corners trying to save a buck rather than maintaining a pristine course worthy of its namesake. I will not play this course again.
