Played the Whites 7/15 Super Twilight for $6.75. It's a good deal after a crappy work day. Didn't finish, mainly because it's summer so lots of people were out and also b/c the group in front of me insisted on playing the blues despite not being able to hit the ball. They basically walked the edge of the trees on every hole, slicing their ball like crazy. I mean, seriously? Play the whites at least. It's not a huge difference, but it'll help speed things up a bit. Anyway, I digress.

Course was in it's normal decent condition. I play here because it's cheap but the course is in decent condition. If you compare it to more expensive courses, or places that don't have $13 twilight and $7 super twilight rates, it's not a fair fight. But dollar for hole value, it's good.

Only thing of note, the sprinklers were running on #2, so we had to drop the bag on the side, then run in, dodge the water jets, and hit our approaches. Wasn't a problem, the sprinklers turn slowly, and it forced you to play a little quicker, but it threw me off a bit.

Eaton is a regulation 9-holer. Got out for super twilight rate of $6.75 walking, probably teed off around 6:30 and just got 9 in as the light was fading. Pace was a little slower than usual. Getting the full nine in should be easy starting by 6:30. The course is in good shape right now. Green fairways with good lies and I didn't encounter any thin spots. Tee boxes are generally level with a couple of minor exceptions, but a little chewed up. Didn't hit a bunker so no comment there. Greens were good -- seemed a touch slower than usual but good medium speed. Something new to me was the fairway of the downhill par-4 4th hole has been reshaped. The left side has been left to grow up into rough, narrowing the fairway to the right half of it's previous configuration. You can't see it from the tee box, so favor the right half of the target area between the tree lines. It will definitely make the hole more demanding than it's previous, generous and more forgiving setup. Right now, with the long days and the setting sun painting the mountains looming over the course, it's a short but challenging, scenic little nine holes to squeeze in at the end of the day. When you get to the second green, make a point of looking back up the fairway for the view.

Played there early on 6/9. Was the 3rd to tee off with a friend. Pace was fast for the first nine and only slightly slower on the second nine. Fee's were not too bad. $22 with a cart for 9 holes with $12 to replay. Overall I liked the course.

Play was slow as expected late in the day. Fairways look like there is some kind of aeration going on and irrigation repairs. Most fairways had dry/dead spots. Greens were in good shape but very slow. Bunkers were in better shape and looked as if sand had been added recently.
All in all, $11.25 well spent.

Played twilight sunday, 4/5, for $14. Awesome 9 hole course, greens have break, and course has character and hills. Walked it and finished in a little under 3 hours, which is typical of the slow pace ... Continue »

Played twilight sunday, 4/5, for $14. Awesome 9 hole course, greens have break, and course has character and hills. Walked it and finished in a little under 3 hours, which is typical of the slow pace of a public course. Play here a lot and probably will play much more considering Brookside just upped their greens fees again. Can't justify paying that much to play that course. Love the Eaton Canyon, though.

Played yesterday, 4/1 as a single @ 4:45. A high school group and some groups following them were out on the course, but the last of them were two holes ahead of me when I teed off. There was a two-some about 1 1/2 holes behind me. I had a nice buffer zone and played a two-ball practice round. Greens seem to be fully recovered from aeration and while they looked a touch nappy they seemed to putt fine at medium speed. Tee boxes varied -- some were a bit lumpy and chewed up and you had to hunt a little to get a level/green spot while others were in better shape. Fairways were OK. It's never what I would call lush here and there are occasional thin lies to be had even when the fairways are in their thickest coverage. It's a hilly, foothill muni and that seems to be a by product of the topography. However, it was serviceable and enjoyable enough with mostly good coverage and lies. Sometime in recent months they added a new layer of sand into the bunkers and they are much improved as well as more consistent bunker to bunker. I think they are in the right zone between being playable and soft but the sand having some heft to it so as not to be too fluffy. Some of the bunkers used to have small rocks in the more dirt-like sand. The new sand layer is better quality and effectively covers up the problem if, in fact, the rocks are still under there. Same company manages Altadena and they got the same bunker upgrade. It was good to see and makes a difference for the better. Generally hitting well, never caught the group ahead of me, nice warm late afternoon, mountain views and made good time through the round. A pretty nice 9-hole experience for 11 bucks and change. It was over too soon.

Fun 9 hole executive course. Easy to walk, not too challenging, but good enough to use most clubs in your set. All parts of the course are pretty good. Rough is plentyful and most fairways are lined with trees. Nothing special, but a good place to work on your game. Most people walk and pace is pretty decent. Easy and quick to get out as a single. A very enjoyable short round.

Walked on immediately at 9am and played 2 rounds of nine. No waiting on any holes and completed play in under 4 hours. All greens have break and are super soft so every shot creates a ball mark. Customer service is outstanding, from the starters to the bartender.

Played nine holes after work on 2/21. Finished in 90 minutes for $6.50 - great deal. This is a fun little course to work on your game if you are short of time, although it does slow up considerably ... Continue »

Played nine holes after work on 2/21. Finished in 90 minutes for $6.50 - great deal. This is a fun little course to work on your game if you are short of time, although it does slow up considerably on the weekends. Built on hilly terrain, its a good collection of downhill holes (#1, 2, 4, 5, 8) where distance control is key with the irons and a couple of uphill par 5's (#6, 9) that are short enough to be conquered in two by anyone with reasonable power. Current course conditions are about average for the region this time of year. Eaton Canyon is always a fun way to spend a couple hours.
