skycrane77 - Green Valley
I've played every course in southern Arizona and Canoa Ranch is the best course south of Tucson and unequaled in Green Valley. The greens are bent grass and in excellent condition on a par with any 5-star course in Tucson. The fairways are in good shape, but a little thin. The many bunkers are very deep, but in need of repair, which is ongoing. But what makes this Schmidt-Curley course great are the many elevation changes, outstanding views of the Santa Rita Mountains, and several challenging risk/reward holes. This course is a must play in southern Arizona.

This course was in beautiful shape as usual. Alot of the bunkers were being repaired but the rest of the course was well worth the money. The greens rolled really smooth and the fairways were in great shape. All in all this place is the best bang for th buck in southern Az

the fairways and greens are in great shape. some of the sandtraps suffered from having been overwatered, looking more like ponds than sand bunkers

I really like this course. The greens are always in great shape. Right now they're doing some work on the bunkers, so many of the bunkers were marked as ground under repair. With 5 sets of teeboxes this course can play anywhere from 6500 yards to 4400 yards. #2 and #9 both have split fairways which make you think very hard about that 2nd shot. There's only water on one hole #18, but a lot of elevation changes throughout the course. The greens on the par 3's are well protected, but on the longer holes, the fairways are very inviting. The staff is always very friendly and effecient in performing their duties. This is a fun course because you can bomb it off the tee, but the split fairways and tiered greens make you think hard about your approach shots.

Course keeps bringing me back . .I like this course. Played this weekend with my wife and mother in law, and a single who got paired up with us. He was playing the Blue tees, which are back from where I normally play . . so to keep the pace of play moving, I played the blues. They make the course a lot different, particularly on the par 3's. I enjoyed the round a lot. There are two really nice golf holes on this course, that will stack up with any I've played. #2 has you driving from a very elevated tee box to a wide landing area. Then for shot #2 the fairway splits on the way to an elevated green. I've always played to the upper fairway before, but decided to play the lower this time. It made for a pretty easy wedge onto the green. Nice to try new things once in a while. #9 also has a split fairway to an elevated green. This hole was very difficult when we played it because the sun was setting directly over the green. Made vision extremely difficult. Had to trust the on-cart GPS units and memory to tell me how far out I was. Lo and behold I hit my best-ever approach on this hole. Maybe that seeing what I'm aiming at just gets in my way (LOL) . . The fairways were extremely hard, so everything was rolling about 20-30 yards further than it has when I've played previously. Made up for playing tees further back than I normally do. I really liked the tees for the par 3's. Transformed them from pretty easy 140Y shots to 185-200 yard shots. The greens, as usual, were nice . . rolled true, and held shots. This is a course worth a look at if you're in the Tucson/Green Valley area.

Played this course for the 2nd time ever this last Saturday (12/29/2007) and enjoyed the round much more than the last time I had played. The course is in very nice shape. The greens were a little bit bumpy, but rolled pretty straight and true. There was a frost delay when we showed up, and we were notified promptly by the cart guys which is always nice. So we spent some time on the range waiting for our turn in the rotation. I think it would be nice if they'd comp range balls in these circumstances, but ah well! The counter guy did say we probably wouldn't get 18 in due to the delay, so he did give us the 9 hole rate which was very nice. This course has a lot of elevation changes, which is a feature I really like. There are two holes on this course that are monsters! #2 which is a very elevated tee into a valley with then the option of split fairways for your 2nd shot to an elevated green. A very nice golf hole. #9 is also a great hole. Again you have split fairways with a huge (don't go there) ravine between the two on the way to an elevated green. Classic risk/reward! This time my decision was easy because I was on this hole just as the sun was setting. Couldn't see well enough to risk trouble so I played it safe, hit to the upper fairway, then across the ravine to the green. I would have preferred to "Tin Cup" it and go for the green with my 2nd shot . . but the Arizona sun is blinding when it sets in your eyes. #18 is a beautiful hole. Desert on the left and water on the right. A very generous landing area, so neither comes into play if you're even close to straight. I like this course much more now than the 1st time I played it. Am looking forward to playing it again.
