mikelgabe - Tucson, Az
This is a hard course to review. The course was in very good shape. The greens were great, the fairways were beautiful, the staff was very helpful. It's just not "my type" of course, so the "thrill" of playing it wasn't there for me. The course is more of a links-style course with lots of rolling hills, hidden greens (at least from the teebox), very high rough, and severely undulated greens. I certainly don't have anything bad to say about the course because it was in excellent shape and everyone I met was very friendly and helpful. I think it would have been a nicer place to play if the pro shop provided yardage books. I was a little surprised on several holes to find hidden trouble after hitting what I thought at the time was a great shot. You must be very precise with your approach shots. The greens are huge, with severe sloping. If you miss the level the hole is on then 3 and even 4 putts are very possible. There are several holes with split fairways that pose great risk/reward opportunities. The two 9's were quite different. The front 9 was in and around houses while the back 9 was much more open . . even to the point that there were horses at the end of one of the fairways. Not actually on the course, but behind a fence over the green. There are a lot of forced carries. Some of the risk/reward type, but others just to find the fairway, or green in one case. Would I play this course again? Yes, but it wouldn't be my first choice in the area.
