This is somewhat of an update... The course is getting killed by the drought conditions (30% manditory savings) so the rough is mostly dead now and the fairways are hard. Meaning long, long, LONG rolls and you can find your ball in the dead grass on the sides. Greens are holding up as are the tee boxes. This could be a great course if the managment took the time and $$$ to bring it back to it design potential.

So, this is sort of my home course (my home backs up to it) so I am quite familiar with this one. First, there is a TON of competition in San Ramon with several public and private courses in the very close area. Canyon Lakes is not cheap, but it is a challenging course from any tees. The fairways in the spring are in excellent condition as are the greens and tee boxes. The course can be quite busy, so unless everyone pays attention to manners and ediquite, the divots and ball marks can add up. Challenging holes include the par 5s (long and generally narrow fairways) there are quite a few bunkers on this course, and they have needed re-sanding for a couple years. There isn't a driving range, but there are a couple warm-up stalls and a putting green.

When the course is in good condition, the price is OK, when it starts to deteriorate due to weather and wear, it can seem a bit overpriced, so use the twilight and/or senior rates to ease the pain.

Walking this one is a chore as the distances between some holes is a pretty good hike. The elevation changes will also knock you for a loop, so unless you are in good shape and carry a light bag - use the carts.

This course is way over priced. The marshall is overly agressive in pushing people along. The course is in terrrible shape. There are greens with goose droppings that prevent reasonable putting.
The fairways have not been maintained; the marshall said their superintendent has quit and I can see why. At this time of the year, February, the couse should not have such barren areas and un-repaired divots. The restrooms are equally lacking in preventive maintenance with ceramic tiles falling off the wall. Too bad, for this facility has the potential to be very good. I will not be back in the foreseable future - there are too many better values in the area!

Yes, could use some TLC, but can play pretty tough. Actually it is in better shape than a year ago (when I just started playing this game.) Could use tons of new sand. Has some really challenging holes where OB is along the entire length of holes (in particular the par 5s), good amount of water to contend with, and the wind picks up in the PM. Overall, not a walk in the park, but a legitimate test of skills.

Over the last few years, I've played Canyon Lakes a couple of times per year. Today I was very disappointed in the condition of a usually pretty good track. If you like goose crap, then the front nine is made for you! Awful-they need to hire a dog as some other nearby courses have done. In the past, the greens were always fast to medium fast and smooth. Today they were very slow and bumpy with numerous bare spots on all but two greens. The teeing grounds ranged from acceptable to lousy-some with huge patches of moss! Pace of play was o.k. but a marshal would have helped a few times-we did not see one during the entire round. As the 49ers say: "Maybe next year it will be better..."

Payed 85 dollars to play it on weekend during the summer, course was in decent shape not 85 dollar shape. They have no beverage cart service and when i asked about the cart service i was sternly told that they would rather get you off the course in 4.5 hrs than create a nice experiance you. People in the pro shop were very rude, I will never play this course again.

The course was in very good shape the day I played. I was with another person and the course paired us up with a father and son. The play was very slow. The father was teaching his son to play and they were taking multiple shots. after 3 holes we were about 2 holes behind and the group of 3 behind us was right on top of us. The marshall would not let them play through and after another hole my friend and I finally skipped a hole and went on by ourselves.

Canyon Lakes is a fair golf course. For the most part what you see is what you get-no tricks, blind shots, crazy bounces, etc
Perhaps the only exception is the tee shot on no.14 where the landing area is extremely narrow and a miss anywhere left puts you at the bottom of the hill and very close to the creek.
The senior rate Mon. to Thurs. is one of the better values in the East Bay. No driving range (sigh!) but you can loosen up by hitting into a net.
