A public course kept up like a private country club. One of the nicest course around. Very Hilly course with tough greens that in the summer just dont hold. Greens are very challenging, should have a lot of fun with this course. Only draw back is this course doesnt come at a blue collar rate. weekdays $50 and weekends from $65 to $75 so its one of those treat your self once a year courses.

This is a great course and a great layout. The new ownership has stepped up to the plate big time and is spending money to bring this course back to its former glory!!

The conditions have really improved. The are the same guysa that bought Deer Ridge last year...I'm not sure what the previous post is refering to....the rates actually went down since 2006. If you live near by you can buy a membership that is good at either Shadow Lakes or an equally good or better course across the street Deer Ridge.

Since my sept. 2006 posting, this course has new ownership,which has taken away the old discount rates and ,why am I not surprised, raised the fees ..combining their system with the other course they own ,across the street,Deer Ranch. ....so what they have now, is something like,a membership card which allows you to play either course. and its not a bad deal if you live nearby and can manage to get out and play these courses about 100 times a year to get your money's worth.
Most people I talked to said they thought deer ridge was not challenging enough , so they play Shadow Lakes more often.
for the general public, I believe the twilight rates,are now 35, they used to be 25. I would play it for 25 $ but not for 35. Roddy Ranch is the better course to play now.
I liked shadow lakes last year. But now its time to move on.

Not all that long, but the greens are very fast and tough, and the fairways are rolling. This is also my favorite new course. Nothing easy about this is easy. It's immaculate. Can't wait to go back. And the price including a full lunch was $45 with an 8 am tee time. As of right now Troon owns this course.

This has become my new favorite course. Although soon will be under new ownership and it remains to be seen what changes ,for better or worse,will happen. But this course is very nice in many good ways. beautiful vistas on several holes. the housing community that is built around this course, is just far away enough,up the slopes of the hillsides, or somehowis not so 'in your face' as other golf /housing communities,such that when you get on the course, your mind sees mostly the golf course and not so much the houses alongside it. there are ,however a few holes where the houses are dangerously close to the fairway and you can see some shattered windows that have met golf balls. but the architectural layout of this course is pretty enough to keep my attention on the beauty of the fairways and not the houses that too often ruin the natural beauty. the layout is nice. Its a links style, no trees to speak of, but the shape and contour of the hillsides,uphill,downhill, makes me not miss the trees. thats a great accomplishment in course design to make a course look beautiful without any trees. Roddy ranch achieves that as well.
So this course is challenging but not overly so. fairways are pretty wide.greens are mostly accessible.the wind plays a big factor on several holes, especially in the afternoon. the par 3's are tough. I just find it a pretty golf course, very well maintained and manacured. staff is helpful enough and casual.in this hot climate,summer is very hot here, but they Do keep water barrels full on several holes. the greens are very fast and undulating. I have few complaints,but one is the sandless traps....all traps seem to have very little sand and what sand there is ,is very wet and hard. This course has many greens,very elevated,as in, hitting up a big steep hill,where all you can see is the flag. between that and the wind, you will play 2 extra clubs sometimes. other holes,downhill,will play 2 clubs less. its a little tricky like that.
For such a nice golf course, it is rarely crowded.tee times are easy to arrange,often they tell you to just come by. So you may find you have the 'whole course to yourself' feeling...which I like alot.you enjoy your own pace of play. I play slowly ,enjoy the views, and with no pressure,take my time, and still finish in 4 hours or less. twilight time ,with lower rates,will crowd the course a little in the afternoon,but even then the pace of play is not much of a problem.
IF this course wasnt part of that awful real estate phenomenon ,housing community golf course system,and this course could be unblemished by houses on the hilltops, this course would be very beautiful from start to finish. like roddy ranch. roddy ranch would cost me 35 bucks. shadow lakes cost 25.(twilight) I would drive the 50 miles to get to either course. Its a good golf experience.

All in all a good golfing experience for the middle of January...but: The deal used to be all the practice balls you could/want to hit-not any more-$4.00 for a small bag (35 to 40 balls) and the range was rather thin and muddy. Also, I played with two very nice gentlemen and we completed the front nine in two hours, playing behind a twosome which was a little slow. At the turn, a foursome waltzed onto the tenth tee in front of us and teed off. I went into the pro shop to inquire why they got to cut in and was met with the" I don't know, I just got here, I didn't clear anyone, I'll send a players' assistant to check" routine. To their credit, they did send a marshall to inquire and he came back with the lame/nonsensical explanation that "they said the twosome let them play through". This made no sense at all and we played the back nine behind them, waiting on every hole. This was an obvious breach of etiquette which was ignored or at least chosen to be overlooked by the management.

Good golf course where wind is almost always a factor in the afternoon. Lots of variety and elevation changes. Most holes are pretty straightforward and fair with the possible exception of #16 which forces you to lay up short of a lake and even if you hit the perfect shot it might catch the hill wrong and you are wet! Also on the tee shot on 16, you can hit the perfect shot from the tee and still be stuck with a rather severe downhill lie with about 160 yards left over the lake. The greens have been becoming firmer over the years but they still will hold a well-struck shot. "Below the pin" is almost a must when the greens are running fast as it's impossible to keep most of the downhill putts from running 8 to 10 feet by.

The course itself it very nice. It's challenging, but also layed out in a way that makes it fun to play...not just hard. It it very well maintained too, although when I played I happened to catch it when the greens were recently aerated. The only thing I was sort of disappointed about for a course of this quality is that it's poorly marked for yardages (hard to locate sprinkler heads), the course has no yardage book, and there are no hole layout illustrations on either the score card or the tee boxes. So sometimes you're left guessing how to initiate playing the hole from the tee.
