Played yesterday at 1:00pm They just had the city championships over the weekend so the conditions of the course were great. If you wanted to make the cut over the weekend for the second day you had to shoot a 77 over better.

Greens rolled medium fast. Minimal divots. Fairways in pretty good shape...an odd brown spot here and there. Sand is good.

I don't think I've ever been disappointed with the conditions of this course.

The only negative is that it can play slow at times. Today it took 5 hours to complete our round.

For those that have not played it - there are some serious optical illusions on holes because of the pull of the ocean. Today on hole 10, we were mystified how our balls turned right and broke uphill towards the ocean.

Played in the morning today...

The Good: sand traps, design, coffee at clubhouse, finished in 3.5 hours

The Bad: greens still bumpy from aeration, fairways bare in a lot of spots

The Ugly: cart died after 7 holes, had to call for replacement

Played last Sunday during the Ryder Cup. I've played here a lot over the last 4 years. We call it "Casta Del Slow or Mow" depending on our mood.

Today it was not slow although a bit brown on the fairways. The greens have seen better days. Divots everywhere.

That being said, I've always really liked this course. In fact, out of all the executives I've played this is probably my favorite...because the par 3s are of decent length, and it does have enough par 4s to spice things up (most of which are driveable).

Asked the groundskeeper what the course record was...he said "48" - 12 under by I think a friend of Mark Calc.

Course is very walkable. Spicy dogs at the 10th hole are great but can burn the roof of your mouth.

Clubhouse looks like it hasn't been remodeled since the 70s.

When I retire I could see myself playing this course with the old codgers that frequent it.

Played this course for the first time yesterday at 12:30. I had to laugh at the previous review stating it was his WORST ROUND EVER. Because I had my BEST ROUND EVER (well almost) shot in the 70s and for me that's a good round.
There was no nasty marshall on the course. We finished in under 4.5 hours.

What I liked: Ocean views, greens were relatively divot free although slow, driveable par 4, decent fairways.
What I disliked: Bunkers were horrific...I'd pick the ball clean, you can't play an explosion shot. The blind tee shots made if tough for a first timer.

Sure there was construction but it didn't ruin the round. The greens have been aerated on half the green (the side that the flag is not on).

Other than that I'd say it's good value for 40 bucks - esp once construction and aeration is completed.

Played yesterday at 10am. There was a 15 minute delay to get started. My friends wanted to play this course because we couldn't find the right price at San Juan Hills or Tijeras.

I was actually not looking forward to playing because I've read so many crappy reviews on the internet - ranging from "on par with a pig farm" to "bird sh$t on greens that look like double A size batteries"

I actually had a fun time playing it. It's not a goat track. Greens were pretty decent, not too many divots. There were a few bare spots on the fairways but overall not too bad.

I wouldn't put this on my A list, but it does the job for satisfying your golf fix. It's in standard muni shape with some interesting holes.

Played today. Like recent reviews state, the greens are pretty slow and fuzzy. Usually after summer they are pretty quick but times have changed.

Condition of greens and fairways are good. Very few bare spots or divots.

Finished in 4 hours. This course will always be one of the top munis in orange county.

For those that have never played it , it is walkable

Played Monday the 10th. Finished in 4.5 hours after starting at 1:00pm.
Overall the course is still in good condition. Played as single. Didn't even have to wait to play. Main putting green is currently closed all though side one is open.

Some exceptions:
Hole 5, ocean facing par 4 has some nasty virus on it. A lot of spots are chewed up.
Some bare spots on the fairways, overall though not too bad.

Tips:
Hole 6 - Plays nearly 2 club difference from the blues, that's with a steady breeze coming in.
Hole 12 - Plays at least a club more, even though it looks relatively flat, the wind always pushes balls back at the hole.

Always enjoyable.

I've been playing Sewercliffs for about 5 years now. I've seen this course in a variety of conditions and I have to say it's in great shape!
Played yesterday mid morning. Perfect beachside temps, and speed of round was 4.5 hours.
Greens have never been in better shape. Very few divots. Not too soft. Just the right speed.
I'd give the fairways an above average rating - usually you get all kinds of dry spots, and patchy grass but they've done a heck of job growing out the grass.
If you haven't played it, it's easily the toughest "little" course in Orange County. Only 6200 yards from the tips but I've played with guys from the Nationwide tour that have had difficulty staying under par here.
Great value for beach-side golf.

Today was my first round at Maderas. Best conditions I've seen in So Cal by far.
Observations:
- Course plays a lot shorter than the scorecard appears. All long holes are considerably downhill
- Troon customer service is first class - Watermelon scented towels and lemonade at the end of the round.
- Immaculate greens, fairways. No divots on the greens; hey were hard but receptive (I know that sounds like an oxymoron)
- Lots of roll on the fairways.
- Great layout.

Played yesterday and was really looking forward to it. Hadn't played this course since the Riverside/Orange course days. I read a couple of reviews mentioning the new course in the same breath as Goose Creek...I beg to differ; goose creak is a Filet Mignon, Green River is a cheeseburger at McDonalds.

Pace of play was good today. (Just over 4 hours for a Sunday morning) Fairways were spotty in parts but overall not too bad. The greens had virtually no divots, but were extremely soft and spongie.

The first 13 holes are all on the old Riverside course. Some long par 3s but overall you can crush this side if you hit long straight drives. The last holes are all on the old Orange side. The wind always seems to pick up down there and it makes it much more difficult.

Big props to the customer service. All the guys were really friendly and helpful.

Overall, I'd say this course is still worth putting in the rotation to mix things up. Not great, but good Muni style golf.

Played the 26th. First time I've ever played this course. #1 - It seems overpriced. Greens, fairways, bunkers, and rough were all in in good condition - but not great.
The layout is average at best - a bunch of forced carries. Greens were not very flat and had lots of undulations.

Lots of planes taking off overhead and plenty of wind in this area because its exposed.

I like playing new courses and it was worth the 70 bucks to play it just once. But I won't be coming back at that rate... there are better values to be had in the area.

Love this course. Just wish pace of play could somehow be enforced. Played on Monday at noon and had a great time. It's such a good layout and the back 9 requires a good amount of strategy.
We had a couple of drinks in the clubhouse and the bartender was great.
Sure they could fix a few divots on the greens and speed up the pace of play, but I can't complain too much.
Worth the green fee.
