This is a course that i definitely recommend. $31 bucks to walk on the weekends if your a resident. Medium length course with alot of up and down slopes. Pace of play is great if you get out before 7:30am. Should finish with in 4 1/2 hours.

They Aereated 1/2 of all the GREENS. It's bumpy. It's bad and I was really disappointed. Truth be told I thought they aerated middle of September boy was I wrong. Greens are terrible now really bumpy and no one is bothering to fix their divots. No pride in ownership here. Fairways OK. We were behind a foursome of knuckleheads. I felt our group played fast but these guys were just plain slow. It was painful. So much in fact we stopped following them after 13. No point it was clear we wouldnt finish the round so we skipped around. If a group is faster than your group it's OK to let them play through. Even playing as poorly as I was we played pretty quickly the group ahead was just plain ... painfully slow.

Being one of only five golf courses open to the public in the South Bay you would think they would have better playing conditions. Considering the amount of play they have; from what I heard some major greenskeeper staff turnover and the like the course could be a lot worse for the money. Greens have come back well from their areation. Still a little bouncy and some really bare spots on the green around the edges can be a bit of a dissappointment. Compared to the last time I played here... they have done a lot of work. Greens roll slow which is OK for me. They are also receptive which is a big plus. Fairways were somewhat lush but overwatered in certain areas. You need to rope off those areas including the overwatered rough sections to help preserve the grass. Otherwise it will die and you will have bare spots sooner rather than later. Play was SLOW. I mean crazy slow. We were a fivesome keeping up with a foursome in carts. It was funny. Round was approximately 5 hours. I figure in another week the course should be in great condition (greens) as they heal completely from the aeration. But if you decide to play now you won't be disappointed. Greens are typical muni but show they have been cared for well. Just one pet peeve. Folks FIX YOU DIVOTS! They don't fix themselves.

it is plenty true about the greens being damaged. i personally think that this course is played too much. it took me 5 hours to finish today starting at twilight. their driving range is right into the wind. so you cant get accurate yardage on your clubs. if your index is over 10 then the greens are fine. thats my opinion. good luck.

When youdon't repair a ballmarkand it sits fora few days THE GREEN DIES!!! No one at this place fixes a mark or has a clue for that matter. It's a decent layout but the morons that play here need to have some respect for the course. What would it cost to put a sign in the carts about this. BUT GOD FORBID AMERICAN GOLF GAVE ENOUGH OF A sh$t TO DO THIS. Marshals? Non-existent. Cart Girl? Why try to make a few bucks for maintenance? I think the greens are being maintained by Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles! Chester washington is rolling in his grave.

Something of a surprise. conditions overall were good. I was worried by the first green being in very bad shape, bumpy and patchy. But have patience, the rest of the course was in good condition. Greens were a little slow and the rough a bit patchy but better overall than I had been told.
Played Saturday Morning Aug 30 and kept up a good pace. The starter shuffled the starting foursome like cards but once we were away we didn't have many waits on the course.

Played today 7/27 - Back 9 -
The course is not in the best shape right now - the greens are still sandy from punching. Which I though was a month ago, they might be re-sanding the greens. One of the greens was destroyed by a diease or something. They are going to repair it soon, I almost tripped on the alternate hole they dug.

The fairways needed some help as well but I have seen them go dormat for a minute and then come back to green. They might have mis-calculated the watering of the faiways. Please fix the Tee Boxes

The pace of play is typical for Chester - the guys in front of us were betting, and the guys behind us were pushing.

Overall it was a good day to get out and hit some. I have full confidence that this course will be back in shape.

Played here Saturday May 3rd. I joined a group with a 9:40 tee time and they sent us out 5 minutes early. The course was in good shape and fairways were pretty smooth, but the greens still haven't completely recovered from the recent aeration. Pace of play was good, only a short wait at one hole - the first par 3- but it was a short wait. Finished in just under 5 hours.

Good news: Teed off at 1:20PM on a friday and finished in 3 1/2 hours!!! Bad news: Had a 12:30 tee time and was delayed by a tournament that started an hour late. If they wanted to study slow play from the wrong tees, not caring about other groups on the course, or fixing any ballmarks, this place would be the lab. They are punching the greens tomorrow so stay away for a while.

I don't play here very often because of the generally poor condition and the extremely slow pace of play. Well surprise - surprise. Actually tee'd off 15 min ahead of our tee time and played in just under 5 hours. (Which is horrible, but for Western, it's not too bad) The condition of the course was pretty decent, particularly the greens. Reasonably quick and true. If you play the "tips" here and ignore where they place the markers, this is not a bad test of golf, in part because of the winds which always come up in the afternoon. All in all, not an unpleasant day on the links!

Played here March 8th.
Made an online reservation via americangolfDOTcom for 12:44pm, didn't tee off till 1:55pm, to say this course is slow is an understatement.
As for the condition of the course, not too bad, fast greens and fairways were ok. I for sure enjoyed the back 9 over the front, love holes 12 and 13. I could see playing here again but not after 11am on a weekend

I have played C.W. a few times, and for a local municipal course it is a good fun/challenging course to a mid-level player. Recommended to get an early tee time and get there at least 30min early, as the starter is quite poor at getting groups off on time. Your typical California 5-somes are common so play can be very slow. As for the course itself, the fairways are pretty well kept with a moderate distinguishing from the rough. Fairway bunkers are not too well kept, but greenside ones are OK. The greens are much trickier than one would expect to find on a muni-course. Good roll, subtle breaks and not too bumpy.
Overall it is a fun course and well worth the cheaper prices than other courses nearby for twice as much (mainly SkyLinks).
Get out early and you will have a nice day, later tee times prepared to be sloooow and possibly not complete tthe round.

For a LA County course, Chester Washington is in good condition. The amount of play this course with stands and being in good condition indicates the superintendent is doing good work. The greens are excellent ..... fast but fair.

Course in fair shape....other nearby courses with greens in much better shape. Pace of play....very very very slow....left after 5 hrs after the 14th hole. I guess it does not help if you get out over 30min. after your tee time and playing near the Christmas and New Years week. Everyone was out there! May want to try some other course if you play during the holiday week!

For the "money" it's a good public course and right now it's in good shape. I've played a lot worse in my time and for more money so I think it's worth the money. If the course were to roll the greens more often and a few other minor things this has the potential to be a great local course.

Played CW on Sun. 11/25. Teed off at 8 am and played in 5 hrs - to be expected as they allow fivesomes. Course in decent shape. Some greens a little bumpy but plenty of grass everywhere. CW is open off the tee, but the greens are small, firm and often sharply sloping (#5 and 10 especially). Requires accurate short irons or soft chipping touch. Overall, a pleasant day on a fun course.

Twilight golf 2PM: $24 to ride per player. Greens are always nice here -- not too bumpy and balls will roll pretty true. Breaks are very tricky though. You see the break; question is how much and how fast. Perfect challenge. Locals take care of this course and it shows. Fairways are brown to green and still playable. Tee boxes are sometimes undulating but dealable. Greens are in fine shape. They roll pretty well but beware "volcanos" around hole. A firm put to the hole is necessary because this course gets loads of play. Only wish I played better to match the perfect day.

Actually same good conditions for muni course as last time now with 1 temporary green #3 par 4 shortened about 40yards that we didn't know, one buddy's drive shot stopped at the edge of green.Today's pace of play was about 5 hours almost impposible to finish usually at this course. As always cool breeze help to have one's good round .

There is nice definition between the rough and fairways here now. The course has lost some trees, but have planted new ones. In 10 years it should be a tougher test off the tee. Sand was too soft. greens were good except for the one chewed up by the ducks.

Played 7/7/07 (triple 7) for the 1st time.Never occured to my mind to reserve tee time here ,you know? This time one buddy invited to join their group of single digit players I accepted to experience the course & to get the logo ball. Reserved at 11;40 but teed off 12;15 waiting after 3 groups ahead and wait, wait, wait to each shot to finish the round about more than 6 hours.Really typycal municipal, flat walkable ,cheap & short(little bit more than 6300yards) course to try your best score of your golf life (I was almost). If you hit straight & long you can bet. No major obstacles present here & some ponds really not into play (just landscape proposal) & slow greens without slope makes easy round if you concentrate to score well. All these vulgar things are forgiven by cool temperature & breeze of this course cause of near ocean location .Imagine if you have to support 6 hours under the sun of +90 degrees, uhhh!
I'll gonna play again to break my record score here.

Played @ CW on July 8th. Will Never play there again unless they get a new starter and marshall (not sure if they even have one). Starter (Edward) allowed multiple people of the same ethnicity to cut in line, pay less than the going rate and tee off ahead of you. Other clerk (Ken) behind the counter didn't seem to care that 9 people were in line to check in and seemed content to watch the TV. Play was extremely slow; tee time was 3pm (now granted twilight on a Sunday is going to be a bit slow but...) there were 18 people waiting at the first tee. Waited on every hole and shot. Took over four hours to play just nine holes. Too bad since the overall course seems like a nice place to play and weather is good. I'd rather pay a bit more and actually play golf than wait all afternoon.

Played Friday 6/29. The course had some rough spots. The greens were long and very slow. They had been punched a few weeks ago but some were like putting on fairway grass at times. The tee boxes and fairways were ok considering the heinz 57 varity of grasses growing. Overall there were not many bare spots. The layout is nothing special and most likely a course I will not be returning to.

Punched and sanded front nine greens, could have done without that on Father's Day, since they just did it that weekend, but again, got a 8AM tee time on the Thursday before, so... Course is in okay shape, fairways are drying out some, tee boxes too fluffy, way to much crab grass. Back nine greens were nice though. Got out a little early, which is unheard of at Chester Watchyourclubs, and pace was okay. Playing with your sons on Fathers day makes up for any course issues though, had a great time, and shot lowest round in months.

Bunkers were very fluffy(fried egg anyone?) but managable- worth the green fee for certain

Course over ALL condition = so so. Tee boxes = decent. Fairways = cut short lots of roLL. Rough = tough, ca-kil-ya is some nasty stuff. Use the slice chip for great results. Greens = looked soft but where actully HARD. They had lots of release to them. Don't beat yourself up on this course if can easily do that. Oh, I played Friday 6-01-07 evening.

For $40 on a weekend it's worth it. So maybe the pace can get a little slow at times but it's the weekend pace of play. There are a lot of nicer courses but you'd better be willing to pay for it. At Chester Washington the overall conditions are very good and it's hard to go wrong for $40.

Had a 6:28 tee time Sunday, May 20th. Waited in line past my tee time, no urgency from the starter, though he did allow "friends" to cut the line. Got stuck behind them and by the middle of the front nine they were a hole behind. No marshall to be seen until the 10th green, and when we complained they sped up for about two holes and then back to at least a hold behind. Waited on every shot, still played in just over 4.5 hours, but doesn't the marshall know how this impacts the entire course for the entire day??? Should have been done in well under 4 hours.

You get what you pay for. Course is burned out -- still! Greens were areated a few weeks ago and have been roughed up some more since then. Greens are VERY BUMPY. Watched as several puts would hit divots, since most folks do not fix their divots there, and jump or slow down short of the hole. Did that to me on the first 3 holes and I refuse to be made a fool of so I went divot fixing crazy. Bunker sand is really soft. Ball will just bury itself . Tee boxes are not level. One problem. NO DRINKING FOUNTAIN or cart girl to speak of. It was bloody 90F outside and no way to get water. They are just itching to have someone have heatstroke and sue their ever-loving public servant buts into closing the place for sure. Let me put it this way. I bought drinks at the restaurant AND the snack shop but that wasnt enough. The course has potential. Short and allows you to try a number of shots. Just some MAJOR pet peeves about how they staff the joint is all. Group in front was SLOW! We managed to catch up with them and they allowed us to play through; turned what could have been a 6 hour round into something like 4 1/4 hours -- Not bad for a fivesome walking/riding combo.

The starter should be fired. He was slow and incopentent. He took an unbelievable amount of time fixing the register printer. He also took an inordinate amount of time checking people in. We teed off almost a half hour late. The saving grace is that we played with a very nice twosome. and play went quickly.

For a public course, I was surprised at the good condition. The Winter doesn't seem to have affected this course too much, since the fairways had grass and weren't hard. The greens were good, though a little soft. Even though the greens were soft, putts rolled true and fast. People need to fix their ballmarks. Tee boxes varied from great to poor depending on the hole, but were in good condition on most holes. I only went in the sand one time, but the condition of it was good, with very soft sand. Overall, I'd recommend this course. Though the surrounding neighborhood may keep some golfers away, the course itself is a great deal.

The course is like so many other courses this time of the year that do not overseed the fairways........dry and hard. The greens were in the process of being aerated....I wish they told me when I made my reservation and again when I played. When this course is in good condition....it is a nice Par 70 course....wait for Spring to roll around.

Made the mistake of playing over the Xmas weekend thinking my round would be less then 6 hours. Half hour late from my tee time & 6 1/2's later my round was finished. Besides the crowd the golf course in general was below average at best. Tee boxes were full of non-repaired divots, greens were slow & bumpy. I wont mention the gopher problems everywhere!!!
Maybe the owners can spend some money in 2007 & improve this cow pasture they call a golf course.

I used to play this course a lot in the 70's, but now rarely make the drive to this course. I was pleasantly surprised how nice the course was. The greens were actually good! Fairways a bit thin, but ok, Traps excellent! What impressed me the most is the fairways and rough were actually deliniated. But what really surprised me was that our group teed off 15 prior to our scheduled time and played in 4 hous 5 min, which for a mid day tee time, is very unusual for this course. (Based upon my recollection of prior experiences there) All and all, a very lovely day, great weather, inexpensive greens fees ($21) and reasonable pace.

Greens were aerated 2 weeks ago....no sand on it, however they need to be rolled and cut. Overall course .....very green and many wet spots from heavy watering. In a few weeks, this should be a great green course with nice greens. Front 9 is a very different course versus the back 9. I will return, one of the better maintained courses in the South Bay.

Overall conditions are pretty decent although 5.5 hour round and (incl) teed off 30 mins. late. Greens are still recovering from aeration a couple weeks ago and are slow and bumpy although they do hold approach shots well. Some tee boxes need to be cut as they were pretty bushy in spots. Fairways were decent and sand traps looked like hardpack and wet in spots but I didn't hit in there so not too sure??? Starters were learning a new computer system and appeared rather perplexed with the computer... we had some good laughs with them though. There are some long/tough par 4's on this course that will hurt your score.

My husband and I have played twilight here several times during the summer, and usually I'm not a big fan (for all the same reasons described by others). But last Thursday night we played and I have to say the course was in really good shape. They finally cut back the darn rough, the fairways were pretty nice and the greens were, well, still not great but much less bumpy than they had been! The best part was, only $17 after 3:30 p.m. including cart (new special). For that price, it's a great time for evening golf.

Played Tuesday 7/25. Walked on as a single with no wait. Like the layout of the course. But there is not one redeeming quality to the course. Tee boxes torn up, fairways brown, thin and patchy, greens slow and bumpy. The only bright spot was that I finished in under 3 hours. WOW!

Like I said, the layout is pretty solid for a muni. Holes 7,8,9 can hurt the scorecard.

i hate this d%mn course, it is such a waste of time and money. worse condition course in maybe the entire world. service sucks, people suck, course sucks, conditions suck, no etiquette, come to think of it, half the people don't even know the rules. played on 7/4, our group had a ball fly on our green on 14, coming from a guy who was playing a ball from the 17th (he was not on the fairway, in our plain view), whispered "fore" did not even come up to apologize. the ball hit our green on the first bounce. i wanted to kill the f****r. i haven't played this course in years. i hope they close this sh** down and build some homes or offices or even a vacant lot would be better than this sorry ass excuse for a golf course.

Better put this one on AREATION ALERT!

Greens were punched and sanded just this week. Only time I can honestly say GK was not updated. Oh well aside from greens course in great shape. Sand in bunkers good not hard pan. Fairways were lush and tee boxes although a few not so level were in what I would call reasonable shape for a muni. I suspect they are punching the greens now for the junior tournament they have early July.

Course was very green...they have been watering it a lot. The greens were nice...soft and could have used some rolling and cutting. The rough around the greens were very thick and lush and made it very tough to get out of. Pace of play was typical for a weekend. The Marshalls could have pushed people to pick up the pace.

When I first moved to California in 1970 I played here quite a bit, but over the years the course condition has gotten worse and the amount of play the course gets has greatly increased - go figure? I guess that only goes to prove that "when you're the only game in town" you don't have to concern yourself with such inimportant things like service or providing a good product. The worse part of it that this could be a decent place to play .... but, well you know!

PLEASE PLEASE becareful about playing this golf course! Had a 8am tee time on 6/8 & didnt tee of until 845am. Poor customer service from the starter who was more concerned about answering his cell phone then helping customers. Once I did make it to the golf course I wish I could have asked for my money back. Uneven tee boxes full of gophers, hard, bare fairways and slow, bumpy greens. It sure sounds like American Golf is cutting more funds to save money rather then improve this over-played dog track. The only positive thing about my 6+ hour round of golf was getting in my car & leaving!!!

It's a muni that gets a lot of play from South Bay residents. Greens have a watering problem. Appearently they overwater causing some greens to be bumpy from the activity. Big drainage problem from some of the really nasty smelling puddles they have there. Only advice is bring a 4x4 ball on some of these bumpier greens. Fairways in exceptional shape. Tee boxes some are not level but you can deal. Play was SLOW because of two junior groups ahead of us but after they quit after 9 it was clear sailing.

Played on Thursday, April 27th. Course was fairly wide open, but that is probably because they have just punched the greens and they are HEAVILY sanded. I am looking forward to playing in a few weeks when the greens are back in shape. Talked to a few of the older greenskeepers and they said about three weeks. An interesting course, with sand traps that actually come in to play, unlike some other city and county courses that have traps that don't seem to be placed too threateningly.

Played on April 19. I agree with the previous reviewer that the starter was slow in processing golfers. If you want to play under 5 hours tee off early. For a county course this is a nice course. The course is in good shape with only a few bare spots in the rough. The course is an interesting layout and the moderately undulating greens provide a nice challenge.

Played on Sat. 4/8/05 and I might as well have thrown my $40 out a window. Have never experienced such slow and unorganized service. No starter at tee box to control the back up, the starter himself was slow and confused checking in people's tee times. I had a 12:58 tee time, arrived early, at 12:30, didn't tee off until 1:30 and finished my round at 7:00. They allow fivesomes, which I got stuck with, they overpack the course which makes your game a wait and rush form of play (wait at tee boxes for 10-15 minutes, rush your shots and putts to not hold anyone up.) The group I was playing with quit after 12 holes. Very disappointing since this is a fairly decent track, surprisingly. The fairways and tee boxes were in decent shape, green and lush, the greens were in better shape than expected and rolled faster than they appeared. I would love to play it again, but it makes me think twice with as slow and as full as this course gets, right up with there with Rancho Park as far as pace of play goes.

Greens were recently aerated, in a couple of weeks they will be wonderful. They are pretty green right now. Overall the course is very lush and green. The sandtraps need to be worked on. With the rains, the sandtraps are not fluffy at all and at times pretty muddy. The female started is wonderful....pleasant and helpful.

Well it's spring again and I find it hard to come up with anything bad to say about Chester. Greens are in really great shape. They roll true and you can stick the ball. Played last week Friday and was very impressed with the way the course is maintained. Greens in great shape. Tee boxes are flat and lush. Fairway is lush as well. No flooding to be seen. Overall the pace of play was quick. Great little course in the middle of the city. Definately a place to replay before the hacker messes it up. Hurry, don't delay! Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200, just run to Chester before the manage to mess up a good thing!

Playing from the forward tees.
3/6/06 the course was in pretty bad shape. Would not even give it a "fair" rating. The fairways are chewed up and there are many bare areas with no markings anywhere for ground under repair.

Some of the greens appear to be diseased and the greens are all at different speeds with ball marks everywhere.

I like the design of this course and it is too bad it isn't in better shape.

American Golf should be ashamed but they won't be.

The condition of the course is pretty good, but...IT SHOULD NOT TAKE THIS LONG TO PLAY A ROUND OF GOLF!!! WHEN YOU MISS EVERY FAIRWAY AND SCORE IN THE 120'S, DON'T PLAY FROM THE BLUES. YOUR ROUTINE SHOULD NOT TAKE 35 SECONDS FOR EVERY SHOT. AFTER 10 STROKES PICK THE BALL UP. IF YOU CANT WALK AT A REASONABLE PACE, GET A CART. PEACE/OUT.

The green fee is worth the course. The golf course is in good shape. A good challange for your short game.
The greens roll good. The tee boxes are good. In the afternoon the breeze can introduce a challanging a factor, the wide fairways help . Stay in the short grass and you'll have lots of fun and low scores. The snack shop and bar are nice also. The green fee is worth it.

Played Friday 11/24. Typical Chester day, tee time 9:40, teed off 10:15. Took almost 6 hours. Course in decent shape except tee boxes which were threadbare. But it's exactly what I expect there so no surprises. Good company though, almost reached the 18th in two, little chip for eagle, missed it.

You pretty much get what you pay for with this course. The pace of play was terrible! I teed off at 10:30 am and didn't get through until 3:45 pm, and this was on a Tuesday!!! There were a lot of brown spots due to the hot weather. There were also a lot of wet spots under the trees and the shadows. Don't expect too much from this course and you won't be disappointed...

Nice little Muni. Greens are suprisingly flat and rolled true. Fairways in good order with a few bald spots from drainage repair. Rough is thick and bushy. Fun little course with not too many suprises. Relatively flat with a few down/up hill and sidehill lies. Greens very receptive and great for target shooting.

This is a pretty decent GC. The tee areas and fairways were fairly lush, but the greens were a little too bumpy. This GC will be a pleasure to play if you consistently hit the ball in the air because there are a couple of water hazards. The customer service was terrible though. Other than that this course is worth the experience if you're nearby.

Played 3-6. If you have the desire to play Felecia's home course(BBBIII) this time of the year will probably be the best time to do it. As the year goes so does the course. The greens will more than likely never be better for the rest of the season.

This course was in great shape 2 years ago when i last played it. I returned to play it again & I dont know what happened. The greens had funny spots on them, the fairways were shaggy & the tees had a few blades of grass on them. I heard that American Golf had to cut more costs again thus leaving this poorly managed facility w/another black eye. Poor service, long rounds equals me looking for another non-AGC golf course to play. Dont waste your time here!!!!!!!!!!!

Played in an Adult/Junior Tournament 12/18. Very unorganized, especially since there were only 7 teams. No rules or any information. Course was in okay shape, greens nice but slow. Fairways a little thin, tee boxes were beautiful though. Still a beautiful day, played in under 5 hours and had fun with my son.

Played 11/26. Had a 9:40 tee time, teed off at 10:30. Course was packed waited on almost every hole. Round took over 5.5 hours. Course was in okay shape, greens and fairways decent, rough almost non-existant, and traps a little thin. Sent the person at the food shack to lunch with no replacement at 1:30, not to bright, especially for a course with no beverage cart. Typical American Golf experience.

Bad day at Chester. Teed off over 1/2 hour after reservation. Possibly the rudest guy at the register I have ever encountered. Tee boxes threadbare, fairways and greens okay. Horrible pace of play, well over five hours. And this from a course who e-mailed looking to fill tee times. It's always hit and miss here.

It seems as if the greens have been in a state of repair all year. I thought that one of the greens was being aerated but it was actually all the sand used to repair the excessive dead spots and divots. Once again there is a temporary green on the 7th hole. Another annoyance is the excessive amount of grass clipping left on the fairways after they are mowed. Right now just treat any round as practice or you will be diasppointed

Played 7/17/04, course was in decent shape and if it wasn't for my slow playing partners might have finished round in about 4 hours instead of 5. Bare spots in fairway, but all in all a good day. Except for the snack bar at the turn took 30 minutes to get a hot dogs. We ended up getting jumped by 2 groups. Stay away from the turn snack bar since there is one after the 10th hole.

Played 7/17 at twilight and finished no problem, though we were waiting a lot. Group in front of us at least one hole behind, but no marshalls. Other than that course is in decent shape. Not great, but not bad. Fairways in good shape didn't see any bare areas, greens ok, a little slow, and tons of ball marks. Rough is short, as usual. Played with my 12 year old son, and he had two birdies, so hard to remember anything too bad.

Despite the 2 cool lakes on 7 and 8, the course was in not such great shape. Most of the fairways were quite brown and the greens very bumpy. I can't believe this got a higher rating than DeBell or Harding, its in much worse shape and not nearly as much fun as either

I had not played "Western" since March 2002, and the first thing I noticed was all the trees that are gone! Gives a different look to the course. (Not a better look either) Particularly the 13th hole. Too bad, because this course can not afford any negative conditions. However, all things considered, still a pleasant day of golf and an enjoyable track, despite the marginal conditioning and general ambiance.

Played the back nine again. And before I forget, the customer service as great. that being said . . .

The greens were drenched because the gardeners were watering just as we had arrived. This made play quite frustrating as the ball hydroplaned across most of the greens and dug deep on approaches (not to mention that my pant cuffs were unnecessarily dirtied).

The tee boxes were thin as well. It is a neat experience to tee it up from the tips, the current blue placement, but please, be observant to the ratio of dirt and grass.

It seems as though the course is going through a slow transformation and will be soon a very nice course with the rough edges smoothes out. Also, I am sure that the conditions will change the next time I play there, and I will.

First, the time played was at dawn ad on the back nine. With that out of the way ...

Chester, as wide open as it ways, demands more of your attention that you would first expect. The greens have many breaks, and some are very graduated. The bunkers do quite well to promote a garrisoned green.

The fairways were smooth and nicely cut. The teeboxes, however, are a different story. They do need work. I had to place and then replace my tee on more than one occasion.

Nonetheless, a good experience, if you could get past the attitudes in the pro shop. They do not take too kindly to questions. Either that, or, I just have that face that begs to be ignored.

They have made changes to the course by cutting down many of the trees that lined the fairways. A little too open now. Two large trees that surround the 13th hole were cut that make what was a somewhat difficult long par three much easier. The course can be fun and the greens at times for a municipal with such traffic (5somes) can be surprisingly good. This day however the course was crowded with the typical pecking order and clique that are usually there. They have done a respectable job trying to maintain and improve the course but the service could defenitely improve. the green on hole 7 and 8 are in terrible form which they have always been. Pace of play slow, greens ok but not as fast and smooth as sometimes, fairways typical, tee boxes a mess.

This course was jammed on Monday at 6 am. I on the waiting list for 2 hours before actually teeing off. Play was extremely slow ( 5somes are allowed). The front 9 is in bad - to - poor shape. The 7th green is atrocious and American Golf ought ot spend some of that 5some money to redo that green. The back 9 is in much better condition. It was an awful experience due to the wait and slow play. Too many regulars dominate the early hours. I won't be going back anytime soon.

This course joins a long list of American Golf Courses that have really improved over the last 2-3 years. While the fairways are ok and the tee boxes not to good, the greens and areas surrounding the greens are in great shape! Chester is a fun course to play with a variety easy and difficult holes. With small, firm, fast greens that are surrounded by a lot of ku-ku-yu grass, it is hard to shoot a low round here given the fact that overall it is not a very difficult layout. Usually it takes a long time to play this course. (5 hrs. is typical )

I played CW on 6-24-03, teeing off in a foursome and playing in about 3:45. Some of the greens were rough and bumpy but a lot were in fairly good condition. The fairways were in very good shape; the sand traps were poor with not enough sand. Overall, it was an enjoyable round.

This course is not known for being in the best conditions but from past experience the best I've seen this course was the weeks surrounding this tournament, Remember things like this help educate the less privlidge golfer and helps inner-city kids get a chance to play golf.

Played C.W. 3/26/03. Course was in decent condition with the exception of the greens. My god, memo to the regulars out there, by a freakin' divot tool. I hit on to the 10th green and I counted 10, very obvious, divots. Its a little annoying for REAL golfers to try and putt with huge craters impeding the line. Other than that, a decent golf experience for what is basically a practice round. your basic course with the exception of 13, which can be difficult if the wind is up. Roughly 180 yards, with the green in between 2 large trees, a nice hole. Shot a 79 and played poorly. Good course for beginners.
