This was the last of 8 courses we played in 5 days. The "Ike" must get more play than the "Babe", I don't know why because the "Babe is a quality course. The pace of play was a little slow at a little over 5 hours. The greens were a bit bumpy and had some ball mark damage. The fairways and tee boxes were in good shape and overall I enjoyed the re-design, the coures was much more fair.

teed off around noon today. The Ike is in B+ shape (greens a little substandard for this course). Fairways are tight, tee boxes are solid, and the rough is growing up a bit. The greens were slower and bumpier than usual though. This facility does a great job of catering to its customers - at least that's my opinion. There is ample staff, and they just seem to work a little harder than most places to ensure that you have a good time. I read HarryO's comments below. I can see some merit in them, but the course back in the "old days" was simply a bear. It just wasn't fun trampling around constantly in the knee high scrub. Sightlines weren't great, and the cartpath only rule resulted in 6 hr rounds. I don't know about you, but I'll take carts on the fairway for a 4 1/2 round.

I have had a running love/hate relationship with Industry Hills since I was a member there in the 80's. These are the two golf courses which I use as a benchmark to judge all other SoCal golf courses. IMHO, it is very sad to see a couple of things...
1. These courses have been being "dumbed down" for the last 10 or 15 years. It is being done in the name of "playability", but they have been cutting the rough back further and further and taking out bunkers with abandon...this last "improvement" saw them re-shaping some of the more challenging greens on the course.
2. They are letting carts on the fairways. When I was a member (and for many years after that) carts were on cart-paths only. That meant that the course was always in immaculate shape. Now there are muddy spots, bare patches, and sometimes rough fairways.
3. Because there is more play (due to carts in the fairways), the greens do not really hold up that well, and they go thru periods of being very slow, then fast, then slow...never consistent.
4. I have yet to see anyone improve a Billy Bell design. I have seen people try, but for me, I have never been pleased with the result. These are two courses that I really don't bother playing much any longer...particularly since they raised their rates so much. I think a lot of people who have played there many times over the years feel the same...you can almost always get a tee time.

Was very disappointed with the attitude of the starter, the slow play and the overall layout of the course. We had the play the first nine twice because it was so slow. Being from out of town, we expected the Ike course to live up to its reputation. It did not. In fact, we could have saved the our money and more importantly, our time to play more lush and better laid out course. The greens were inconsistent, the rough was mixed and the sand traps were not as deep as I thought they could be. Also, there was no GPS (which seems par for the course in LA) and no yardage books. In fact, there wasn't even a hole layout (except for the resort layout they barely offered). The yardages were well marked but it seems that was the plus. If you can play for only a week in LA, don't play this one.

Played Tuesday 12/4/07 9:30 a.m. Tee time. Great day ! Service with a smile all day,picked me up from range. T boxes tight but all in good shape none of that sloping side hill nonsense. Fairways cut to perfection, tight lies okay. Medium rough made you wish you had hit the fairway but very playable. Large medium to fast undulating greens,very few divots unreparied. Pace of play very good,no one behind us until 10th hole. Gorgous day for being outside playing the game we love.
