This will be combo review for TWO different dates inside a weeks time.

Layout: Explore San Diego's Only Tom Fazio-Designed Masterpiece (over the years were different names). A few years ago, was featured in the now defunct "Golf for Women" magazine, a course that is playable for women golfers too.

Perhaps that’s why 14 of his designs made Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses."

The signature #17 Par 3 now has multiple tees for all levels, it's a semi-island green with a well protected bunker on the right side of the green and a great demanding finishing 18th hole Par 4.

The Par 3 9th hole despite having a very undulating 3 tiered green has had quite a few Holes-In-One including for a Z28 Camaro June 2012 and BACK to BACK from the same group about 2 months ago.

Some of the greens have false front's, a signature from Tom Fazio. Beautiful views overlooking the resort on hole #4 & #13, the highest elevated tee box is #15 and the drive-able uphill PAR 4 #14.

There are several tees to choose from, The WHITE tees are plenty golf course for the average player, step up to the BLUE tees and the course plays different.

Cust Svc: Perfect! from the time you arrive at the Bag drop till the end of your round, players are given wet face cloths handed to them on a silver platter to wipe their hands, face etc...Corporate events or large groups enjoy delish lunches prepared by the Chef in large boxes, the baked chips are so good too! Adult Mobile beverage cart is available for players and Forecaddie's are used before the Twi-light rate to help you navigate the course.

GREENS: Current greens are ALMOST perfect, speed above medium to fast, rolled true,no bumpiness,VERY LITTLE ball marks on the green and are being repaired correctly! Having Forecaddie's defitintely helps with the process of keeps the greens close to pristine.

FAIRWAYS: Most divots are being completely filled with sand, each cart has TWO sand bottles and there are refill stations located on the par 3's. The course no longer overseeds, they'll make the course cart path only when needed. The Grand also employs and rotates ENTRY & EXIT stakes (Brown with White Tops) to minimize wear on the rough from the cart path. Very good overall conditions right now.

BUNKERS: Perfect medium sand and very consistent. There are plenty of these located throughout the course, just not pure white sand in this stock photo.

This is a 5 Star Resort/Hotel, IF you ever get the chance to play it, do it!
I've seen many beginners enjoy the surroundings of the golf course even though their golf games weren't what they were expecting.

Played in the afternoon 5/16, and overall found the course's reputation overrated. Starting with initial customer service, the cart attendant was scarce making it take awhile to get a cart. The cooler was only stocked with 1 water swimming in water, with no ice. The range was in good shape, but the whole tee line has a downhill slope so every shot is below your feet (if you're a righty).

On the course, the fairways were thin in a lot of places and fairly brown. Many had just been both punched and verticut, so one had to hit from the debris at times. Greens were quite slow, and several had a lot of repair going on around the fringe. For a course that has most guests use a forecaddy the greens had a surpising amount of pitch marks. We could easily fix a dozen or more significant dents on every green - don't know why forecaddies weren't seeing them.

Our cart pretty much died after 8 holes, so we limped in after 9 and again there was no one to be found. We took a chance taking a lone cart sitting in front of the starter stand, but odd there was no one around to help. Once again after we finished, there wasn't anyone around the cart return, but after about 5 minutes someone showed up to move the clubs up to the valet park.

Pace of play was fair at about 4 1/2 hours, and it was surprising how crowded the course was for a weekday afternoon. We didn't have to wait for a group in front of us until about 10-11 holes, but then it slowed down a bit.

Overall, the layout is nice and the course is in a nice setting meandering through the hills and up and down, but the condition and service was disappointing, especially so since it is a very nice resort at a high end price.
