I scored a Monday afternoon tee time for $45 on Golfnow. At that rate this place is a steal, all other times were $160+. I was concerned about finishing since we got off late and there was a bunch of people lined up. Starter was on point and ended up sending everybody off as twosomes on various holes since a shotgun tournament had just finished up.

Ignore the previous reviews from September, maintenance is done and the course is phenomenal. I love the layout and it's definitely top 1-2 in SD. Greens were near perfect if not a touch slow. Fairways and tees perfect and the rough was UP! If you've got the cash or can find a deal get out there.

Another perfect day at Torrey Pines. My buddies have young kids so early morning on Sunday/Saturday is about the only time they can get out. Of course this is the case for most everyone else so primetime rates it is. I can't bring myself to pay $75-$100 for the Twin Oaks of the world when I know I could be paying less for a world class course. Just about everything today was perfect, although I would say that the bloody Mary's from the cart girl weren't quite as good as last time. Get out there ASAP.

Played Sunday 2/23 at 7am. Course is absolutely immaculate, can't imagine a nicer conditioned course in southern CA. Greens, tee boxes, fairways, and bunkers are all pga quality. I believe it is one of 2 courses in SD county (not counting north course) to overseed. It's a steal for SD residents. I played it the Tuesday after the Farmers and it is in as great of condition but more enjoyable because the rough is penal but not impossible. Kudos to the superintendent, I can forgive you now for letting balboa go a little.

Oh yeah, get yourself a bloody mary, one of the best in town.

Just got off the course, played the back 9. This is an easy review.

Tees: perfect
Greens: perfect ( my opinion, med-med/fast with minimal ball marks and rolling true)
Fairways: great (few bare spots)
Rough: not typical Torrey rough which I like. Unlike the pros we don't have spotters. No search parties needed but penal enough.

Get out there NOW, course is in awesome shape.

I played Riverwalk Sunday a 6/30 at 12:30.

First thing I should mention is American Golf is out and Touchstone golf is in. it was kind of a cluster to start. The starter was there 20-30% of the time leaving a lot of golfers very confused. Not sure what was going on but the whole operation seemed very disorganized but the round actually only took 4 hours so maybe they have a method to their madness.
I paid a discounted rate through a friend, but the rack rates here are way overpriced. Fortunately you can nearly always find a deal somewhere. It seems like I get an email from them daily.

We played the Presidio-Mission combo and thoroughly enjoyed the round. Highlight of the course is the greens. They were smooth and med/fast. Fair amount of undulation but not enough to make it annoying. Fairways are okay, definitely some hardpan here and there. Tees are fine and the bunkers I was in were good. It is not a long course and typically you can miss one side or the other. Creek and trolley runs through the course so you can definitely find trouble if you miss on the wrong side. Wind can be tricky adding a club or two if you are heading into it.

Overall it's fun course that you can score on. I would guess that most play here because it is one of the most convenient courses in the city and is usually in fair to good shape. If you can get a deal you'll be glad you played here.

I played twilight Friday 6/28 for $15, which is probably the best deal in SD.

Rat-Patrol covered it pretty well, but I would stress the slowness of the greens. I play here quite a bit and typically they are pretty good, but last week they were bumpy and slow. Not terrible by any means, just a little shaggy. I found the fairways to be pretty good, a few bare spots but not bad. Rough is spotty, no real defined line between rough and fairway. It's typically not very penal but you can find a few deep areas.

You can let it rip here but for me it never really suits my eye that well. A lot of very subtle dog leg rights so a cut shot off the tee (righty) helps. Unfortunatley that is not my strong suit.

You can expect slow play but you can also expect excellent views, great clubhouse, and a friendly muni vibe.

Played back to back days 6/23/6/24, first day I played the tips and it beat me up pretty good. Played the gold the next day and shaved 10 strokes. From the tips I seemed to find every type of Dye trouble that could be found. Bunkers, lakes, rough,...I was in them all. Also wasn't prepared for Mr. Dyes parallel bunkers that ran for days. I was always thinking that I could carry them but they seemed to always grab my ball. Oh well, it was a good challenge.

Round one was played with the gf in about 3.5 hours and round two was played solo in about 2 hours. Conditions were very similar to my previous review of the Player course, bunkers slightly better (tougher for sure) and fairways slightly worse. I didn't think that the views and aesthetics of the course were as nice as the Player course. The Dye course also has nice short forward tees at 4841. Anytime I can find courses with ladies tee boxes under 5000 I am a happy camper, everybody should have a chance at birdie a couple times a round.

Westins stay and play package is definitely worth it if you can stand the heat.

Played the Player course as part of a stay and play package with the gf. I love that they have ladies tees under 5000 yds, the lady could actually reach the green in two on a few holes.

Service was great, no one out there so we basically had the course to ourselves at 8am on a Monday (6/24). Played it in about 3.5 hours. Fairways and tee boxes are in great shape, a few burned out areas in the fairway, but none that affected play. Greens are a bermuda/rye mix maybe? Not too knowledgeable on my golf course turf, but I do know that they were much different than putting on the bent or poa annua greens in SD. They were firm in that approach shots didn't leave ball marks but you could hold a shot into them. They rolled pretty true and were actually pretty easy to two putt on just couldn't make many over 5-6 ft.

I loved the layout, suited my eye better than the Dye course . Less houses on the course and overall a more enjoyable course for me. You could get into trouble if you weren't careful, I rolled into a few lakes I didn't think were in play and if you stray too far you could be in OB trouble.

Overall I highly recommend the course, especially if you are playing with the wife or gf. She was cursing me after Silverrock (bunkers and more bunkers) and loving me after the player course. Plenty of deals to be had, you've just got to hope for the weather to cooperate this time of year. I've played it in 115 and this time is was a comfortable 95-98.

Torn on how to review this course. Paid $130 on a saturday at 12:00 through a golf league I am in. First time playing the course and I loved it. However, for the rates they charge I expect immaculate conditions across the board. What I found were slightly better than Balboa Park GC conditions which is $50 vs $225 rack rate at Aviara.

Fairways were nice but found some bare spots here and there. Greens were med/fast and inconsistent. I think I read where they punch 2 greens at a time which leads to inconsistent greens. Where this course excels is the service, layout, and aesthetic beauty. It is laid out in an upscale subdivision, but the houses are very far from the course. You are very much secluded in a valley with great views of the lagoon and surrounding hills. Tons of flowers everywhere,
and a lot of water and waterfalls, especially on the par 3's.

Since it was a tournament round we played a combo of the blues and whites. Blues are 6600 and the whites are 6000, leaving a big gap. I am glad I didn't get stuck playing 6000 yds for $130 but many in the group would have struggled from the blues.

The course didn't knock my socks off like I would expect for the rates they charge but it is a great course. Many similar options in SD for a lot less money, namely Arrowood, Cross Creek, Balboa, Sycuan, and Steele Canyon. Overall a sweet course but they better get on their superintendent if they are going to charge $200+.

Played Friday afternoon for $15 walking. Course is in much better shape than 3 months ago. Fairways and tees are good and the greens are coming along. Greens are still recovering from being punched but roll just fine. One of the best deals in town, played about a 4:45 pace on a Friday afternoon which isn't bad.

Very flat layout so its an easy walk. Great views of the bay and coronado bridge. Highly recommended course to anyone looking for a central, inexpensive, well cared for course with outstanding views

Played super twilight with the gf on Monday. Nobody was out there and for $15 its a great deal and a good opportunity to work on the short game. You'll be hitting a ton of sand wedges but you will get to bring out the driver on one hole, a 265 yd par 4. Overall a very enjoyable Robert Trent Jones designed course.

I found all aspects of the course to be in good shape except the greens. Looks like they are still recovering from maintenance, but will be good to go in two weeks.

Played Balboa Sunday Morning with fellow gkers Matt, Jim, and Andrew. I was tagging along on their first match for the GK South Cup.

Balboa is still in fantastic shape. First thing we noticed was that we had nobody behind or in front off us, which seemed odd since it was primetime on a Muni on a Sunday. We all walked and played in about 4 hours and 15 minutes.

The course is still in fantastic shape. Greens and fairways are as good as any public course in SD. The superintendent needs to be commended on the job he's done on this course. I miss living DT simply due to not having this course nearby. Don't expect your clubs to be cleaned, your bag to be retrieved, or a huge sprawling clubhouse. What you can expect is a fantastic conditioned course, awesome views of the SD skyline, and great prices.
They are redoing the tee box (and lengthening) at 13 so expect a very short and dilapidated tee box on that hole. It was badly needed and just another sign of the good work going on at Balboa. Also, range is pretty funky and really not all that great, It grew on me since it was my quickest option living downtown. Very blue collar and a lot of cool regulars in the afternoon. They have a good putting area and two chipping areas. The better of the two is across the road near the 9th green of the 9 hole course.
