Played 3-22-08. Got an on-line deal for $25 for 1:30 pm tee time. Course is in very good shape right now. The greens are smooth, quite fast and very true. Fairways are great to hit from and the rough is penalizing. If you haven't played here, accuracy off the tee is a must, most fairways are tree lined and if you miss them, trees will be blocking your path to the green. The only real negative at the moment is there is a lot of construction between the 15th and 16th fairways, a huge 300 yard long crevice has been dug and balls hit into it are permanently lost, it's GUR so you don't lose a shot but it looks horrible. Other than that, this is a very good test of golf.

Played 3-8-08. Pace of play was terrific, played in 3 1/2 hours walking. The fairways are immaculate, tour quality. The greens are slow and a little bumpy and are very receptive to even mid and long iron shots. The rough is deep in some areas and missing the fairway is definitely a penalty. If you haven't played here before, the key to this course is to hit it straight, if you don't, you can't hit greens because of the tree lined fairways, creeks, ob markers and water hazards etc. The staff were great and the restaurant here is a great place to relax after a round.

Played on 2-17-08 for the first time. This is a shortish course (about 5900 yards) from the tips, however, it is not an easy course. Many of the par fours are fairly short but require a thoughtful tee shot to set up a chance for birdie. Driver is not necessary on many of the holes and a wayward driver will cost you a bunch of golf balls because there are plenty of hazards throughout the course. The back nine is the better nine, with beautiful views and a good mix of challenging holes. The greens were smooth and fairly fast, the fairways were a bit spotty and the staff very helpful. Will play again.

Greens are running very well at the moment, fast and true. The fairways are improving and the sand in the bunkers is good quality. It's always a good test of your skills here, with accuracy off the tee being very important. Can't beat the price and the staff are always excellent.

Great course, this is a must play in Vegas. Played 11/14/07 and course was in perfect shape. It is out in the suburbs and yes, it is surrounded by houses, but the layout and spectacular views of the mountains and las vegas strip help you forget about that. The back nine is the better nine, hole 14 is an elevated par 3 with one of the best views you'll find on a golf course. A must play when in vegas, and much better priced than its competitors.

Played here for the first time on 11/8/07 and was very impressed with this golf course. It is an aboslute gem. The course was in immaculate condition. The greens were great, very smooth, fast and true. As other reviewers have noted, this is a thinking man's golf course. Driver is not necessary on several of the par 4's, what's most important is getting the ball in the fairway because on several holes if you miss the fairway you are looking at bogey or worse. Holes 1 and 2 are dead into the wind so play at least a club longer on the approach. Hole 4 gives the longer hitters a chance to get home in 2. Holes 10 and 11 demand very accurate drives, 11 is a great hole, with a huge hazard to the right of the fairway and a semi-blind approach, 4 is excellent here. 13 is the best par 3 on the course, over 200 yards from the back tees with not much bail out room. 16 is one of the hardest par fours you will ever play, 480 yards from the back with a lake and bunkers to the left of the fairway and OB right, if you end up in the bunkers your only option is to lay-up. Unless you hit a great drive here be prepared to get to the green in 3 shots. Many players not used to playing in strong winds will be surprised how much the wind affects distances here and if you are walking (which I recommend you do) make sure you grab a pin sheet because the greens are huge and you can be left with some really long putts on the wrong part of the green.

All in all this is a must play and I will be back.

** Make sure you read Longball's playing tips for this course. They were invaluable to our foursome and saved me at least a couple of shots. Thanks Longball.

Played 10/20 ans was very imressed wih Woods Valley GC. They seem weeks ahead of other courses in terms of conditions. The greens are good speed and roll very true (almost no ball marks), the fairways were great to hit off. As for the course, you have to hit it straight! If you don't, you will shoot a million. The landing areas are quite small, so don't be afraid to hit shorter clubs off the tee to get the ball in play. The par 3's are not long, but all require forced carries over hazards. The front nine is flatter and longer and the back nine has more elevation changes. No.'s 9 and 18 are closing par 5's which are a really good holes. No. 15 is a longish par 4, with a tee shot set back in the trees and a view that makes it feel like a major tournament hole. All in all, a very good course that I will be back to play soon. Pace of play was good and weather was perfect. Great job Woods Valley GC.

Played Sunday October 14, with red dot book it was $34.50. Course is in pretty good shape. The greens are terrific (apart from some rough spots on no.'s 1 & 2), they are fast, smooth and tricky, great fun to putt on. The fairways were good, some wet spots but almost always a good lie, the rough is at about 2 inches. The course is an excellent challenge from the tips (6650 yards), it has a good mix of holes and requires accuracy off the tee. It is a second shot golf course that doesn't require driver off every par 4 and 5. The par 3's are very tough, the shortest was 185 yards, and no. 3 plays 240 yards. The back nine is the better nine, with 18 a great finishing par 5. All in all a good track and will be back in the future.

Played 9-2-07 with a free round because of an e-mail voucher. They are apparently going to punch the greens on Labor Day afternoon. The driving range is just dirt at the moment, so don't expect any meaningful practice before your round. The course is in fairly average condition, several of the tee boxes were soaking wet (i.e. puddles!), with the worst being no. 1, other tee boxes were burnt out. The greens are really worn out, plenty of ball marks and inconsistent speeds. The fairways are also pretty ragged and hitting the ball in the fairway is no gurantee of a decent lie. I sympathize with the course and its staff at the moment. It has barely rained in the last year, and today it was 108 degrees, in these circumstances it is very difficult to keep the course in good shape. As for the layout, it rewards accuracy over distance. The tips are only 6800 yards, and the gold tees which are the next set up are 6300. The 3 par 5's are all reachable in two. There are some strange par 4's where it is difficult to work out how where to aim your tee shot. Hole 18 is maybe the worst designed golf hole I have seen in my life, it is a joke. I know many other reviewers have expressed similar views. The tee shot is blind, the landing area is tiny and the carry on the second shot for most players is unreasonable. It leaves a sour taste in your mouth at the end of your round. All in all, this is a decent course, but a combination of average course conditions, poor practice facilities and some bizarre holes means I probably won't be back unless it's at a hefty discount. This course charges $105 for the regular weekend rate. Even in peak conditions, I wouldn't pay over $40 to play here.

Played 8-25-07. Course was in great shape as usual, fairways were green and pretty lush and the greens were fast and rolled true. This is now rated the #5 golf course in california, and it's not hard to see why. The layout is very challenging, with lots of elevation changes, uneven lies and forced carries. If you want to find out how good you really are, play the back tees here, you won't find a more difficult course. Service was great as usual, as was pace of play. The big downside, unsuprisingly, is the price, $165 is big money (to me at least). I know other top courses charge this amount and maybe I am just biased because I don't think any course is worth this money..... However, if you get the chance to play here, do so, it is a brilliantly designed golf course that is almost always in perfect condition.

I played here on 6-24-07. The course is in pretty good shape at the moment. The greens ran smoothly, the tee boxes were in good shape and the fairways were decent but certainly not lush (no surprise there, nearly every course in SD has this problem at the moment). As for the layout, the first 3 holes are not easy and the course can beat you up before you have warmed up. No. 1 is a very narrow tee shot, it is wise to consider hitting something other than driver here, a poor drive will not be found and you'll be on your way to a certain bogey, probably a double, just get the ball in play, even if you have a longer approach. No. 2 is a real strategy hole, it's not long but requires and accurate iron or fairway wood setting up an approach across a large pond. As for the rest of the course, the par 3's aren't overly long but they all require forced carries, so check your ego at the door and make sure you hit a club that will reach the middle/back of the green. There are only two par 5's on the course, with a good drive both are very reachable. The only negative here was the state of the bunkers, everyone in our 4some hit out of at least one and all of them were rock hard with very little sand, it was a lottery as to how the ball came out, the course staff need to fix this ASAP, it should be easy - just add more sand! Hope this helps.

Played 6-16-07 for the first time here. The course is set in a scenic area with some ocean views. The fairways were good in most parts and the greens are fairly slow and break largely towards the ocean. You really need to hit the ball firmly for putts to hold their line. The first 5 holes are quite straightforward, but after that the layout gets much more interesting. The two par 3's on the back nine are challenging holes, and the back-to-back par 5's offer the chance of reaching them in two, but they both have narrow fairways and big greens so birdies are not necessarily easy. For $38 (non-resident) this course is a pretty good deal, the clubhouse, driving range and putting green are under construction now, but it's well worth the drive if you live in north county san diego.
