SURVEYOR REPORT Surveyor Report: 11/6/2004
Located in the inland North County section of San Diego, The Vineyard is nestled within wildlife preserves and a producing vineyard near the San Diego Wild Animal Parkand is set against a stunning mountain backdrop. The Vineyard is a nice and challenging course with contrasting 9s. The front nine takes you through some environmentally sensitive areas and stays relatively flat while making you play a lot of target golf. The back 9 takes you through the wine country that's behind the course. Rolling hills, elevation changes and stiff winds can play havoc with a good a score from the front. Try your best to keep the ball in the moderately narrow fairways and hit the center of the greens. A few hole distances look very deceptive to the eye. Trust the yardages. Amenities include a 5000 sq ft club house which has a pro shop and a restaurant/bar. The driving range is right outside the clubhouse and there is also a putting green and separate chipping green a few steps away. The food and beverage cart made 3 appearances during the survey round.

The course is in pretty good shape considering all the rain San Diego has had in the last few weeks, but that is not to say that it can't be better. The greens were slightly above average in condition. They were smooth and moderately fast while being soft, at times firm. They would have received a much higher rating if not for the slight bumpiness on a few holes due to evidence of aeration as well as some pretty bad bare spots on 3-4 holes on the back 9. The fairways are in great shape. Very lush with only a few thin spots. Same story with the rough which isn't too penalizing since it is only 1-3 inches. The bunkers were the worst feature of this course at the time of this survey. The sand was very shallow in almost all the bunkers. Some with less than an inch before you hit dirt. Now this wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for the little pebbles that were also in there. These caused great unpredictability in everybody's sand shots. The tee boxes were decent. Lush, at times thin with only minor unevenness on some holes. No bare spots and minor divot damage. The pace of play wasn't bad at all for a late morning Saturday round.

Overall, the Vineyard is a good choice right now. Decent shape with stunning views. No nonsense service. Don't forget to bring a windbreaker for the back 9 in the late afternoon as it can get quite chilly.
